The 91 video was a great tie-in. I went to this mall once in 1995. The arcade was all I could remember.

I miss the way it was when I was a kid in the '90s/'00s. They used to have KB Toys, Chick-fil-a, Claire's, the Sweet 'n Nutty where you could always smell popcorn, Bookland. I picked out my teenage bedroom curtains and sheet set from that JC Penney and I think maybe the set before that. And the Bath & Body Works has not changed at all since then.
@buffyfan54 жыл бұрын
@Aimee Webber It's in really rough shape. The roof has been leaking in multiple places for a long time. The only big-name stores that are still there were IHOP, Belk, and Bath & Body Works. With Covid-19 I'm not sure whether the IHOP will reopen later or not. There might be a couple smaller things left but most of the mall is empty. Belk owns their part of the building but what I've heard is the same people have owned the rest of the mall forever and have done nothing to improve it in the last several years. I wouldn't be surprised if they let everything close and just let it sit there empty. But hey, the big polar bear decorations they've had for 20+ years still get put out every Christmas...

This was the place to go back in the 80’s. They had an awesome record store, Claire’s, Belk, Toys R Us, book store, Woolworth and a pet shop. (Yes, when Woolworth closed Hills came in for a very short amount of time). It was also the only place that had Chick-fil-A back then. Lots of good memories there. Sad to see how it’s gone down over time.

Originally this Mall was gonna have two levels. There's a small island out in front of Wootens Jewlers and Merle Norman, that's where the escalators were gonna be put. They scratched that plan I guess and that's why there's a random elevated island in the middle.

I'm happy as a viewer you are going to the smaller, probably forgotten dead and dying malls of the south. Every mall has a story to tell. Love you juxta position editing between NOW and 1991. Like the Woolworths (Dead) and Lerners (now New York and Company) and JC Penney (on life support.) I miss having fountains and plants and skylights and some COLOR in malls. If you ever go to my Jersey City Newport Center mall: one of the most bland, lack of character, three tone malls in the world. BLEH. If only there was a way into the JC Penney to get that Hills Cart. Could it fit in your car? Now THAT's Something you can add to your home and decorate it just right to make it an art exhibit.

It's sad to see the malls dying like this. Excellent editing in showing the past and present. I really miss Woolworth's. It was one of my favorite stores when I was a child. I too am surprised the Penney's sign is still there too. The Hill's shopping cart was indeed quite a find!
@rosswarren4365 жыл бұрын
Ah, it was really something in the 1970s when it first opened. The idea that you could go shopping in comfort without being rained on, or cold or hot, was an innovation. In its hey-day it was nice with many stores and I had friends who worked in some of them, particularly the GNC and the Record Bar. Loved going to Record Bar to see what new musical releases were out. There was also a decent bookstore with magazines as well. Never understood why the Colliers family didn't reinvested in the property instead of using it as a cash cow. It could have kept going a few more years. Many people still have great childhood memories of the place, but those memories belong to time now.

Back in the 80s and 90s before Walmart was even a thing in Statesville, Woolsworth was the place to go for Halloween and Christmas, so many decorations, and not just for sale either, they decorated the store, it was great. Anyone else remember the animatronic Santa that went up and down in the Chimney? It was right at the entrance from the rest of the mall into Woolsworth. ALL the Beistle Halloween decorations, they were the best.

I've been by the area a couple times, Ace. Yeah, Hills DID get into North Carolina for a while when Kmart started closing stores, and after Ames/Zayre had left the area (there had been a store in Winston-Salem inside an old Kmart for a while, til that shut down and became Burlington Coat Factory). But I hated to see Signal Hill go downhill-Kmart had also been at the mall, til it moved across the street (and to my knowledge, shut down a few years later). Right now, Belk and the IHOP are about the only things keeping the mall alive-it reminds me of a couple other small malls in NC right now, Penrose Mall in Reidsville (which you've been to), and now, Mayberry Mall in Mt. Airy (which I'd recommend you visit soon, if you haven't).
@mattgillis3296 жыл бұрын
Mt. Airy's Mayberry Mall isn't much better than Signal Hill Mall or Penrose Mall is, right now. Penrose has Belk AND Roses going for it, but Mayberry lost Kmart about a year or so ago, and now is losing JCPenney, leaving only Belk as the sole main anchor. And the mall is terribly outdated, with Roses' new store nearby down the hill, and Ollie's Outlet opening up in town.

Kmart was never in signal hill. It was across town until the early 90's when it moved to its current location across from signal hill. Where it is still in business... for now.

That fountain has got to be the TACKIEST fountain in any mall anywhere.
