I am so glad to have "found"this. It is so wonderful to know that great music, especially opera, is still being written and performed.

We all love diDonato and von stade . So good that they are bringing light to this ambitious opera of Heggie's . Great idea to make such a compelling story with necessary troubling themes we should all think about into a very "American" opera with a populist tonal vocabulary . Heggie is from the town I lived in before I moved to Los angeles. So Proud. Tonality made a comeback in the 80's with the new Tonality- not a bad thing . I dislike the comment about disjunct melody lines . I am always amazed at the nonsense of those who don't love much 20th century art . Berg, Stravinsky , Messiaen Penderecky, Xenakis and Tobias Pincker are full of line. When you watch Aliens or Psycho you never question that the music is right you don't even know that youare hearing it ! This aesthetic came from Schonberg ,Charles Ives Ravel,Scriabin,Varrese ,Will Schumann, roger Sessions,Jacob Druckman etc. and John Cage and many more . They allowed this thinking to flower in the 20th century! I,IV ,V does not express all that there is in life surely . Movies did not give rise to the fine development of timbre, computer music and so much else it came from the THINKING FIELD OF CONTEMPORARY ART SO ASK FOR MORE OF IT FROM YOUR CLASSICAL RADIO CHANNELS AND CONCERT HALL PROGRAMMERS .
