DOA is great for players who don’t want to dig into all of the moves and strategy and have a good time. I played the HECK out of DOA2 and 3. That said, I still love Virtua Fighter for its massive depth and replay-ability. I stopped playing Tekken after 3 since they weren’t on Xbox and I skipped the PS2 and PS3 and had went with Xbox for those gens.

I love smooth fighting games but I’ve felt that especially with DOA since the Dreamcast era, I don’t even know how they do it, I think it’s something to do with the animations and blending rather than the typically excellent framerate, 6 is especially smooth thought even for DOA, it must have some excellent motion blur technology too.

But it is. Just the characters are 9K polygons each. This alone is almost as much as an average Quake 3 scene. To be fair, it doesn't really do a lot with those polygons, and the game ends up looking bland compared to Soul Calibur.

@@Silikone Soul Calibur was an impressive launch title but DOA2 is worlds apart in terms of characters and environments. The faces of SC's characters are kind of undefined in comparison, for instance, and many elements of the backgrounds are just flat textures and sprites, like on Kilik's stage. For me, DOA2 looked insane when it was released.

The DOA2 remaster that came in the DOA1 & DOA2 bundle for the original Xbox was absolutely breathtaking. It had much improved visuals and character models across the board, a wealth of new gameplay modes and options and a ton more costumes from DOA3 and Ninja Gaiden.

I know. I was like, "THIS is what I have been waiting for! This is next-gen!" I had been disappointed with the 3D graphics of the Saturn (and all consoles in that first major 3D generation). I loved Daytona USA in arcades, but the Saturn port was trash in comparison. But after playing DOA2 in arcades in 1999 (and being blown away with the best graphics I'd ever seen), I was expecting the Dreamcast port to not live up to that. However, it came amazingly close and turned out to be what is likely my favorite Dreamcast game ever!

@@jamesrouse3466 Fun fact - the DOA2 remaster on Xbox was using the much upgraded DOA3 engine, which helps to easily make it the definitive edition. I think the PS2 got a re-release of DOA2 as well because the original DOA2 release looked horrible compared to the Dreamcast version at the time.

Excellent video, John. I don't know how much interest there would be in it, and I realize it would be a lot of work, but I would love to see a DF retro devoted to the DoA series. Prior to DoA5, the series was a real technical marvel with some truly amazing stages. It's impressive how well DoA2 Ultimate on the original XBOX and DoA4 still hold up today.

The models are already ripped and looking at them in Blender I can confirm that the models are far more detailed, at least poly-count wise. Looking at the head mesh DOA6 is around 10k vertices while DOA5 is around 2k. That's like, 5 times the jump. In comparison Tekken 7 is still lower than DOA5, and SC6 is even lower. If you want to lament about a series that used to push the limits on graphics but no more now, it's Soul Calibur. SC6 reused the models of SC5 and they're very low-poly; I guess good use of lighting and materials make it less noticeable.

I'm really surprised how little you guys covered the HDR here... I know it's only on one console, but I was really interested to see how it's implementation works. With other X games like RDR2 having "fake hdr" implementation, I find it's a good idea to look closer at how each developer is utilizing the technology. Especially since it's so very much more of a visual impact than 1080p-to-4K.

I have a way weaker machine, but regardless, so many more visually impressive games run smoother than this, and this game lacks proper graphics settings to optimize the framerate and figuring out what the hell is demanding so much. Soul Calibur VI looks better and runs better on the same machine.

I couldn't get my 1070 to lock at 60fps in some stages @1440p max settings. Have to lower to 1080p. This game is not CPU intensive at all. Cruising around 25% on a i7 6700, but it's very hungry for GPU power. This new engine is very heavy, more so than the girls assets. Hope they don't use it in their future games like Nioh 2 or Ninja Gaiden 4 (if it ever comes) because it will tank even a 2080ti in those games @4k.

PC doesn't have a haze. PC is the game's natural gamma showing proper detail in light and dark areas. The Xbox Ones, for whatever reason, have broken gamma settings leading to seriously dark output. That means bright areas are not as bright as they should be while you lose tons of detail in darker areas of the picture (black crush).

Oh boy I miss being pumped about a DOA game. Thanks for this John ! DOA2/3/4 were all some of my favorite games for a while... I never felt DOA5 recaptured enough of what made me enjoy the series so much and well, the betas for DOA6 seemed fun enough but there's still something missing from the style. The PC version really does look like the way to go though if I decide to take a stab at it (I too picked up a 2080ti because a fool and his money are easily parted). Perhaps a DFretro is in the cards down the road for Dead or Alive (there's actually a ton of games to go through- DOA arcade, saturn, PS1, DOA++, Xbox DOA1ultimate, DOA2, DOA2JPps2, DOA2hardcore, DOA2 limited edition (jp DC), DOA2 ultimate, DOA3, DOA3 jp , DOA3 -w- booster, DOA4, DOA dimensions, DOA5, DOA5 Vita, DOA5 Last Round, DOA5 last round ps4/xb1/pc and now finally DOA6). I miss Itagaki :(

I was pointing out how the graphics options in this game is severely limited on the PC for optimisation for different kind of hardware.

Is the PC version stuck with 7 or 8 frames of delay? Or are you just basing those findings off Twitter posts for the PS4 demo? In my experience the Steam version has no more than a 2 frame delay at worst, while the PS4 suffers from a noticeable 8 frame delay.

PC version input delay varies depending on the monitor refresh rates due to the full screen bug. 60hz monitor will have twice the input lag of a 144hz. Ps4 is usually the tournament standard too.

Having both a pro and a X I played both demo’s. Even though performance mode is at 1080p on both, the HDR on X gives it a great pop that looks awesome in 4K. Went with the X version and am completely satisfied. FinalVerdict is my tag if u wanna get it in!

Its crazy how good doa2 looks on DC! You should have shown the japanese limited edition. Higher poly counts, more stages, more costumes, slight change in color grading/ lighting. Hopefully you do a DFR on it soon!

Nah, SC6 definitely looks better. The materials are slightly better in SC6 but the real differentiating factor is how will they interact with lighting and shadow, and SC6 crushes DOA6 in that regard. As John said, DOA6's clothes look strangely flat and last gen especially when compared to SC6's.

Yeah, my GTX 1070 runs it best at 1440p with the rest of the settings maxed for a smooth 60fps. If I go to 4k, it plays like the One X at 4k. It hovers in the 47fps zone on average. Turning the other settings down gains an extra 3-5 fps but, it starts to get noticeable.

Back when I worked in an arcade in London, I always put DOA2 on the Naomi cabinet. Unlike the console versions, it used the double direction hold system and a different sidestep system you couldn't change. But it was a blast and it looked gorgeous. If anyone has a Naomi, get this game for that motherboard.

I guess you might not know this: DOA6 crashes on PC running AMD gpu (at least on Polaris and newer) in one particular arena. The workaround is to turn-off tesselation in the Radeon Software.

Using the Rtx 2080 ti is really pointless. It’s a Titan class card and only the wealthy gamers can afford it. If you are going to compare with PC , please use something that is mid range like Gtx 1060, Rx 580. Any comparison beyond the Rtx 2060 is pointless imo.

Playing it on my gtx 860m laptop now. However it feels like a very different game after itagaki left after DOA4. Animations are way less fluid as there feels like blank frames from the start of the limb movement to the finish. I am playing on very low res and yes I do get a steady 60 fps.

Visual quality. The second option adds better AA and more details in the environments and characters which are in the 4k mode on Xbox. Yet on the PS4 it still runs at a solid 60fps with them enabled

4k Graphics mode on xbox one version is for Xbox Two backwards compatability. It was not meant for Xbox one x but for Xbox Two. I called this a a month ago. I kept saying this. Even John agrees with me at 12:47. Thank you John

Its consistent with other games, everyone who are even a little bit serious about racing games will notice that Forza games and whatever games that includes extra support for Xbox X cannot handle graphic priority setting without choppy motion. But in return it looks great in 1080p, its almost impossible to notice the difference if not looking at stills. Doa5LR on the regular Xbox One had to be at 720p, then 1080p60 is undeniable a huge improvement.
