Pete Burns, the lead singer, used to work in a record shop called Probe, only a hundred metres from The Cavern. (Birthplace of The Beatles). In the late 70’s, I used to go there to buy my records as they sold a great range of genres and was also a great place for people to meet.

This is Pete Burns. He was a really interesting and original person. He had an enormous amount of cosmetic surgery in later years and created a look entirely of his own but one of his surgeries, on his lips, went wrong and he spent a lot of money to try to fix it. He was very enigmatic, like a full time walking performance artist. He died suddenly in 2016 from cardiac arrest, it’s very sad.

I remember when he was on celebrity big brother UK, he was just like you would expect, he did not give a shit, very argumentative and abrasive, yet somehow vulnerable and big hearted. He seemed the kind of person that would make a good friend, honest to a fault, regardless of consequences. 1 very complex, endearing person. 🖤

Great reaction. Had me lmao. 😂 The 80s were all about loosening up and having fun. New wave was an extremely danceable genre. In fact, I'm looking forward to some of that 80s Duran Duran. 90s were all about the feels, but in the 80s they had the bangers. This is Dead or Alive's biggest hit but they have other songs that are equally worth checking out: Brand New Lover, In Too Deep, Lover Come Back to Me, My Heart Goes Bang (Get Me to the Doctor), to name a few. You Spin Me Round was produced by the legendary British production team Stock, Aitken & Waterman and this was one of their very first hits. They have produced music for a lot of artists such as Kylie Minogue, Bananarama, Donna Summer, Samantha Fox, Laura Branigan, Sonia, Sinitta, Jason Donovan, Rick Astley, Mel & Kim and even LaToya Jackson, to name a few.

It's produced by Stock Aitken and Waterman who were very famous in the '80s for producing some of the best dance music. Their sound was called High NRG, very recognizable by the percussion they used and in the earlier songs the cowbell. this type of high-NRG sound was very popular in the '80s in clubs. They produced an album for Donna Summer (an artist that you really need to listen and react to more) and individual songs for many other people. There are other Dead or Alive songs that are lots of fun too, but this is their best one. I don't know if you've heard Casey and the Sunshine Band That's he Way I Llke It yet, I think you did but this group does a great version of it that's totally different. You should give it a listen. Other songs by them that are good are Something in My House, My Heart Goes Bang Bang, Brand New Lover and Lover Come Back to Me. These producers also produced the first two albums by Rick Astley and some of the albums by Bananarama like Venus

This was the the first # 1 hit for the production team Stock Aitken Waterman. This style of post disco music was called Hi-NRG. They also produced the song you really liked - Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley. The lead singer of Dead or Alive was Pete Burns. Pete is wearing an eye patch in the video because he had just had his first taste of plastic surgery - an addiction which would dominate his life. But Pete certainly had a powerful voice. He died in 2016. You should check out Rick Astley's other # 1 hit - Together Forever. The Stock Aitken Waterman list of hits goes on and on. They were very prolific hit makers.

I graduated from HS the year this was a big hit. I went to a small private international school in Houston, the majority of the kids were not Americans and when I say small my graduating class was 19 people. The point is that most of the American traditions were lost on them. So when it came time to vote for a Senior class song this is what was chosen. LOL I guess you really had to see the graduation ceremony to fully appreciate just how hysterical this was. It was primarily a rich kids school full of wealthy French, and South American kids whose parents worked for one of the oil companies. (for the record I'm none of those things but I was smart and was one of the scholarship kids they took in to keep academic scores high).

Jay...Jay, Jay, Jay, Jayvee...this group was my favorite group during my four years in high school from 1984-1988!!!!! The front man Pete Burns was a FANTASTIC performer! God rest his soul. I have EVERY RECORDING THEY MADE! This song and the album it was featured on was produced by Stock Aiken & Waterman. After Dead or Alive partnered with these three producers, every act in the music business wanted to work with Stock Aiken & Waterman: Donna Summer, Bananarama, Rick Astley. I believe you’ve already heard Rick Astley. Listen Bananarama’s song called “Venus”. Also, listen to Donna Summer’s song, “This Time I Know It’s For Real”. These two songs were produced by Stock Aiken & Waterman. As for my boys Dead or Alive, just type in the bands name on KZbin and sit back and listen to their massive dance upbeat tracks! They’re all a lot of fun to listen and dance to!

I was 21 in 1985 when this song was released. It quickly became a smash hit in France my country. How U said this song is super catchy: it has always stayed in my mind since then. It is typically a piece of music of the 80's: keyboards & rhythm box are predominant conveying such a special sound from this period. I heard some remixes all sung by Peter Burns the original performer later. However, the original version of "You spin me round" that U played here is by far the very best one: catchier, more lively & above all funnier than any other mix. An extended version was also released in 1985. I like it too. But the LP short version played here is my fav' one: no need to extend what is already so effective & good. If a listener wants more fun with this song, so, they just have to press "replay". One of the features that made this song become such a hit single was of course Peter Burns' voice that sounds so powerfully masculine. The contrast between the singer's usual feminine outfit & his voice greatly contributed to make Dead or Alive be noticeable & famous .

As a devotee of Dead or Alive, it would be interesting to get a review of the one of the remixes of this track both that were official single releases (in 2003 & then again in 2006) and/or additional remixes available. There are quite a few. Obviously, this original was the beginning that secured Dead or Alive with their strong fanbase. R.I.P Pete Burns & Steve Coy. Your legacy is much alive!

I have three words, STOCK, AITKEN, WATERMAN......HUGE powerhouse team responsible for a TON of amazing tunes! Pete Burns was brilliant, and there a more albums from Dead or Alive that did great in Japan/Europe and didn't make the charts here. One of my fave songs from Dead or Alive is NUKLEOPATRA, and HIT AND RUN LOVER.

When I saw this video as a teen, it pissed me off that here was this MAN who was prettier than I thought I'd ever grow up to be (this is long before I saw Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust" period). And yes, Pete Burns in 1984 was more gorgeous than I ever became. But that's OK! He left a great song.

Went to see Dead Or Alive at a club just outside of Philly. One of the best bands I saw in the 80's, and I saw a lot of them! Such a fun time and the music stands up to the test of time. It's also from my college days so there's a lot of good memories from that time in my life. This whole album is good.

Loved enjoying your reaction. I still remember the first 5ime i saw this and kind of stopped me dead in my tracks. It was so different, and weird, and creative....and a little bit scary. Above all, Pete Burns' vocals and the great instrumentals. Boy when that opening riff would play at the club it was a rush for the dancefloor. Thanks for doing this one.
