My high school literature teacher recently passed away, just 3 months shy of her 90th birthday. She was still on social media with many of her former students. She had a wicked sense of humor and an adventurous personality. She made class fun, she treated us like adults, yet she wouldn’t let you slack off one bit lol. I learned so much from her, not just about literature, but about life. 40 years later and I remember her classes like they were yesterday. A great teacher is a treasure 🧡

Both Neil and Todd were examples of young men living lives of quiet desperation. It takes Neil’s death for Todd to find his voice.

This one left me feelings sideways for days after I saw it in the theater during it's original run, decades ago.. I was about the same age as these guys when it came out, in my first year of college. "...and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived." (Oh crap, I might have done that.)

This is true. They used to paddle people who were in trouble even at public schools I attended here in Indiana from 1978-1987.

Obviously, it was fictional but I remember being in kindergarten being told that if I didn't behave I was going to go to the principal and be put in 'the spanking machine'

When the person you expect to support your dreams is the one who tears them down, life becomes a nightmare you can't stand to live.

I went to a very strict, Catholic girls' private school. The pressure was a nightmare. I literally almost ended up like Neil. I escaped to college and life got better, but the whole private school experience was absolutely awful. I would have given anything to have gone to public school. Those schools are fine for some people, but if you're at all a nonconformist, you have no place there and they punish you for it.

Jeez, that movie transports me to 9th grade English class 😳🥺 I remember I was a straight -C student, but I skinned at English and History class. And I still got the Mugs I made in 8th period pottery class. 😅 I remember all the rest of the Rez kids like me takin the bus from the Reservation.

Coincidentally Robert Sean Leonard, who played Neil, went on to play one of the doctors on the tv medical drama “House, MD.”

😂😂. I lost it when you said "you don't die sucking it. The bone". Unintentional innuendo is always funny.

FYI, a stiff is a corpse. My school was a small town public school in Western New York (about an hour east of Buffalo and south of Rochester). There was no real change between elementary until high school--same people from grades 1-12, with the exception of people who moved in and out of town. There were 80-some of us, and that made us the biggest school in the county. I was salutatorian, despite the fact that I did maybe 20% of my assigned homework. (God bless the New York state Regents exam. As long as I slid through passing, I could wipe everything out with my Regents test. Not too shockingly, I found out decades later that I had ADHD. Good thing they caught it before it caused me any trouble.)

I went to a private Catholic high school. For me, it was a life saving experience. In my public school, I was bullied relentlessly by the teachers, who all seemed furious that I didn't look like my 2 sisters (both were homecoming and prom queens and their portraits still hang prominently in the foyer of the high school - 40 years later). I literally got yelled at by the principal of the high school on my first day of school, for being ugly and he subjected me to twice weekly strip searches for 2 years. I was 11 years old. My private school didn't treat me badly at all and didn't compare me to other people. I still regularly speak to several of my former teachers and I've been out of school for 30 years.
