A quick look at the basic trigonometry required to do dead reckoning - to help navigate against crosswinds when you have no frame of reference. It's really basic maths, so it's useful to setup a spreadsheet with the calculations in it - which I have done, and linked below:

Excellent article thanks. When I studied to pass my PPL i used one of those slide rules. With the advent of GPS, that slide rule went into a draw and was never used again!

And yes, I know I wrote one of the numbers incorrectly while doing the wind calculation - the method is the important thing though :)
