The closing of the Westwood Kmart is a major loss for the community. I actually filmed the store during the Christmas season, and it had a real liminal space feel to it. The blue laws in Bergen County probably didn't help, either. The store couldn't even open on Sundays, so its potential customer base was limited.

Oh man, the blue laws… every time I would drive past Paramus Park Mall on the parkway… I was like “seriously, closed today?”… oh well. Also the gas pumping in NJ. I admit there are a few things I miss about NJ, but I am extremely happy to be here in SC now. I’m third gen central NJ and had all my schooling in NJ, but I won’t be going back.

Yeah, people even drive north into Rockland County where sales taxes are higher to dodge the Blue Laws. Not to mention they’re sending their tax dollars out of state.

I'm glad I got some footage of Kmart before all of the ones near me closed down for good. Because travelling to Long Island is easier said than done. I'm in PA, so it's not super far away, but still who has money for that. Like I said, I got my footage of it and that's good enough for me.

Hey Alex! Glad you got that footage. It does suck that many folks never got to experience old school Kmart with the old school real cafe that was basically a mini diner. The company has just lingered waaaay too long over the last several years and the shopping selection and experience has been miserable. Many people probably look at this brand and wonder why so many even care about it, it hasn’t been relevant in decades. Thanks again for watching! I need some new weather channel jamzzz!

There was a K-Mart near my house as late as 2017 when the stores were well into getting scarce across the country. The one and only time I went inside the store was shortly after I moved in Saint Clair Shores, MI back in 2015. The store looked like it wasn't updated since the late 80s, though I don't think they were intending for that 'look'. They probably never got the budget to remodel over the years, shopping was like going into a literal time warp. They didn't have what I was looking for, but I did buy some orange juice 🍊

You nailed it! As more retailers gained traction and offered a clean, exciting shopping experience, Kmart stayed down the path of boring. Living in that Detroit area, you have so many amazing places to film! Do you post content?

@@charlestonpinballarcade I forgot what I was looking for when I visited, plus there were no announcements of that location's closure at the time, so no footage. However, K-Mart did acquire The Sports Authority back in the day, where I worked for a number of years. They followed the same blueprint of not remodeling; especially the older buildings. When TSA closed down its last remaining stores, I did take a few pictures inside the Clinton Township location. Clinton Twp was Store 664, renamed to 594 after the Gart merger, and was opened in the early 90s I believe (before I was hired).

@@JudgmentSports Authority was nice, my location was east Brunswick nj on 18. Unfortunately, it was part of a renovation of Mid State Mall, an outdoor strip mall that had Newberrys or McCrory (I can’t remember sometime) with the old school mini diner inside and also BEST. Sports Authority and Best Buy moved in and it was cool, but that wave of retail changed really set us up for what we are experiencing today. Big box with no heart or soul, leveraged debt that catches up with all these retailers that tried to grow too fast.

One left in Miami and one in Long Island is correct, plus a few other stores outside the 50 States as you mentioned. During the last three or so years Kmart has been open, half the stores have been walled off with shelving units and left vacant. It’s a shadow of the store I remember from when I was growing up. Kind of sad to see a store go like that.

Hey Rich! Did you go the one in EB on 18 back in the day? Remember how it was the way back OG style with the brown tile and the cafe in the back the store when you and I were kids? My grandmother would take me there for burgers and fries. It was awesome.... for being a fat kid!

Yea, from what I’ve seen on recent vid… the few sears left have bare inventory areas all over the floor plan. I honestly want to understand who is working at corporate for Kmart / Sears and whats going on? Is there actually someone doing the books, being hr, handling logistics… what are they thinking, if one of them leaves, does the hr person then becomes the buying manager also? This whole decline is massively fascinating.
