Despite this video's comments being filled with yet another indepth discussion about things that don't matter, I absolutely LOVE this clip. I remember watching it on TV originally and laughing so hard my sides hurt for ten minutes after watching it. :D

@archivesbc lol and most importantly... we do NOT swear to the president. Infact, he himself swears to uphold our constitution which begins with the words "We The People...". One could say that the President in essence swears allegiance to the american people! (rather than the other way around)

@alexsau91 The term "variety" is the technical linguistic term for a group of dialects. And American English is just that, a group of MANY dialects, all influenced by factors associated with the unique cultures and histories of the many regions of these United States. It IS a variety and great variety at that. And many linguists assert that the phonology and phonetics of American English is actually more faithful to the English of King James I and Shakespeare than modern British English :)

@iamsaved7 I stand corrected. Thanks.

@iamsaved7 I only wish that were so, unfortunately far to many Americans DO believe the stereotypes they see on TV shows; so its not that surprising that the British would see some truth in a comedy like this. For such an insular nation its quite true that we are naive about the workings of other nations and cultures. I love the British, and I love their comedy! Which is what THIS is. Perhaps you might watch other clips of Dead Ringers where they take the piss out of themselves.

@alexsau91 I don't believe that study, there has been no nationwide referendum on immigration in the U.S., and places like Ellis Island are almost venerated as holy grounds, emblems of our nation's history and reflections of our extraordinary willingness to accept the world's "tired, poor, and huddled masses". You can call it a lack of space (not true in Germany or France...I've lived in both of these places), but I would call it xenophobia.

@iamsaved7 you swear to the American flag, constitution, and president. You support the American sports team internationally, and you follow the set federal education curriculum. You cannot compare that to different anthems (Welsh, British and Scottish) and a formal request to become sovereign (Scotland). The closest equivalent of the US is Germany - Although each area has its own government, they all see themselves as German first and foremost, and belonging to their province/state second.
@alexsau9113 жыл бұрын
@iamsaved7 So you believe - A US study concluded that 55% of Americans favored decreasing legal immigration. You accept more legal immigrants than the UK, Germany and France because you are a far larger country and less densely populated. You can be proud of it, I wouldn't be; I voted in the last election for a party that vowed to drastically cut legal immigration. You can't know the truth just by asking them; an Irish American would know less about true Ireland than most of the English.

@iamsaved7 some people read science fiction written by drugged up writers and say - good fiction, Others, like 6gingerninja9, read it and say that it's not fiction but reality. Then again, Britain itself is a mish-mash of cultures - from the Northern Scotts to the Welsh, English and Northern Irish, to the commonwealth immigrants who settled in Britain, there's no unique British identity. Americans, in that sense, have more of a unique identity than the British.

@alexsau91 My country is one fourth of the entire world's economy and this is less than 250 years after our beginning as 13 insignificant colonies. I refuse to defend my nation's achievements to you.At any rate, it would take far too long. And just to clarify, I'm writing this in American English; a "variety" of English recognized by linguists the world over.Austrians and the Swiss speak "German" but are surely not Germans nor do Germans hold the patent on that language. Don't be ignorant here.
@iamsaved713 жыл бұрын
@archivesbc there is an "american" identity but we are divided into, neither provinces nor districts, but 50 "states" for a reason. Each "state" is fairly independent and sovereign entity with its own history and culture. You cannot lump 308 million people together. Just like a welsh man would take offense to being called irish even though both cultures are "celtic". I just returned from a year abroad and I grow tired of the european tendency to stereotype and lump americans together.
@iamsaved713 жыл бұрын
@archivesbc Umm you really don't know what you're talking about. 1st of all, states have ultimate control over their schools. That's one of the foundations of our constitution, meant to be a safeguard against an over-powered federal government. The federal government only has the power to stipulate how federal funds are spent and states reserve the right to refuse federal funds. Oh and if you didn't know several US states asserted their right to complete sovereignty (just as the Republic of...

@iamsaved7 Mass immigration is as unpopular in America as it is in the UK and most of Western Europe, don't fool your self that its not: 2/3 of Americas are concerned by Immigration. And please, American Television stereotype other nationalities endlessly - from us Posh Brits to cowardly French - your a fine one to lecture on believing what you see on TV. One is accurate as the other i'm afraid. Yeah, yeah it's so sad... I'm devastated.

@iamsaved7 Xenophobia? Fine, if i'm a xenophobe in your eyes I really don't care. We've gone way off topic, so you can carry on berating me, but i'm not going to respond again. I've more than made, and proven, my point, and I stand by it. Others can make up their own mind.

@archivesbc ... Ireland did). The simply lost that war! And it was the bloodiest in my nation's history. I know my country and I know that most people identify with State and City governments first and foremost. It's only when we get insults from people like you that our national identity comes to the light. I have studied and lived in Germany and I can tell you, as a fact, that the Bundeslaender are much weaker than American States. You don't know my country simply because you watch a movie!
@iamsaved713 жыл бұрын
@alexsau91 I have not displayed one bit of aggression in any of my posts. But I have read false and insulting posts in response to my own by at least 4 others who I assume are British. Fact is, the US accepts more legal immigrants each year than the rest of the world combined. Anyone who can't see the beauty in that is a sad and hate-filled individual. And lol if this video/show, as your comment suggests, is what shapes your opinions of the US and other peoples, that's very very sad.
@iamsaved713 жыл бұрын
@alexsau91 Mass immigration is not unpopular here! ILLEGAL immigration is what is unpopular and immigration reform is needed. Still the US will always accept more legal immigrants than the UK, or Germany, or France ever would. And we do have shows that rely on stereotypes for laughs, but these shows are certainly not the basis of our opinions of other cultures. The fact is, if I want to know the truth about Ireland or Japan or Mexico or India etc., I can ask them myself without leaving the US

@iamsaved7 An Oxymoron really? Dumb and American have become synonymous with one another. British inventions are far more prevalent than American inventions. Question: did you write that statement in English or American? it really doesn't matter, you can talk on your phone, ride the train, use the toilet, drive a car, listen to an MP3 player and ALLOT more because of British inventors. I wonder, did Tomas Edison invent the light bulb? No I believe he stole that from the British Joseph Swan.

He seems a nice person but I think John Culshaw is a terrible impressionist. I can always hear his own voice in any of his impersonations. Rory Bremner is the real deal. His voice becomes totally that of his subject.
@alexsau9113 жыл бұрын
@iamsaved7 Refuse? You can't not defend so you become aggressive and change the subject. Call it variety, change the spelling and pronunciation yet English it still is. American English is nothing more than a dialect. I would ask you not to be ignorant, but their seems little point, as the video explains.

@alexsau91 lol proven your point??? You obviously know nothing of rhetoric. Most of your comments were false and ill-informed and you have left me with serious doubts about the quality of the British educational system. Mission accomplie!!!
