I come off as annoying in this rant, I know. It was very early in my YT days. If I made the video today, this either wouldn't be a topic I'd discuss, since I don't agree with everything I said anymore anyway, or I would have hopefully worded it better than this. I especially don't like my point about the lady who lost her baby. It's dumb, sure, but I don't know. Seems like I made a big deal out of something really small.
I had two iterations of a pinned comment referencing the sexist talking point in the past, but it seemed to just cause more trouble, so I'm leaving the description the way it is and that's it. Tired of getting replies about the same boring thing over and over. (edit 10/22/23, I added another pinned comment. Let's hope this one stays.)

One last attempt at a pinned comment. I genuinely think this video is pretty bad, and is filled with a bunch of takes that are stupid or, at the very least, I don't agree with anymore. Cliff entirely, the game being too gory/cheesy(some exceptions still apply), the sexist stuff is overblown imo, the suicidal survivor take is meh, the story discussions are odd...just, fuck, it's not great. If you dig the video for the most part, I appreciate it! If you don't, I totally get it! I really don't like when others delete comments from their channel or turn comments off, so I won't be doing that, nor editing it through youtube studio nor deleting the video. Too many comments refer to the sexist discussion, so editing that out would feel wrong with that in mind, and unlisting/deleting the video, simply because I don't stand by it anymore, isn't fair to the people who like the video still. This flawed AF video is here to stay. I hope I can do the first game a little more justice in the future, but we're a ways off from that.

Wait a minute, you're definitely not wrong about Capcom being gratuitous with the sexual objectification of women here and Japan is frankly known for that kind of stuff in their videogames and anime. It's fanservice targeted primarily at young men, plain and simple. The question of whether one finds it excessive, distasteful, or they like it is just a matter of opinion. In the end it's up to Capcom to decide if the potential negative reaction from some is worth it. Don't let people push you around just because of political movements that happen in be en vogue right now. Because most of the people who feel entitled to harass you over perceived virtue signaling on your part are just hypocritical bullies. Instead of just admitting to themselves and others that they like the perverted stuff in the game, they feel threatened by your opinion which called some of the treatment of women embarassing or uncomfortable, and their response is to give you a hard time about it and project all sorts of ulterior motives onto you. You see, I can admit that I find the female zombie 69 death amusing, but I wouldn't deny that it's kind of a guilty pleasure that will mostly appeal to young guys (even moreso with the voyeuristic shots of Isabella and Jessie) and I'm not going to try to seriously convince anyone that female zombies eating male crotches is some sort of thoughtful game design decision that just "makes sense" in the context of the Dead Rising world, lol (and for that silly argument to have remotely had a leg to stand on, the male zombies would be eating out the crotches of female survivors in kind). Lastly, it's outrageous for anyone to be demanding that you take down the video and reupload it with the parts they don't like cut out. You've already been incredibly self critical over this so maybe it's time you just tell them to piss off and take their agenda elsewhere.

Watched your L4D2 Off the Record critique and moved one to this one when I finished. I don't agree with a lot of your points but your editing and flow of the video is really amazing. My complaint I will chime in with is the out door mall part at 7:54 . I needed to get gifts for som family so I went to the Stanford Shopping center, where I needed to enter through an outdoor section that took 15 minutes to reach the indoor section. So DR got it right with terrible architectural of malls.

The "Pointless" grusome and silly deaths are based off the campy nature of dead risings influences which were zombie B-movies of the day. As well as the erotic material. Its silly and not supposed to be taken seriously. The game is a nod at how silly those old movies are I liked the review on the mechanics and plot holes (tho that can be explained away by the limtations of the time this game came out)but I think taking everything else at face value is missing the point. I get if the humor and the homage isnt to your liking but I think its subjective.

Also a lot of times there was a clear effort to have psychopaths not be directly killed by frank and mostly their own delusions or hubris. They do similar things in the other dead rising games to avoid chuck or Nick killing some psychopaths too, like the Asian guy you can fight before the motorcycle gang leader. They can't have Nick get a human death under his belt before what is supposed to be his first canon human kill, so the Asian guy kills himself after the fight.

Nha Adam never killed kids. He went nuts because he watched zombies eat his audience including kids. So he got that ride going to keep people away from the zombies, not the greatest plan but his lost mind is what he came uo with. All the bosses have back stories as to why they act the way they do. The store manager watched his customers die after he locked himself in the back of the store refusing to let people in the backroom. Also I will say this about the cases, the first few give you quite a few bigger windows to explore. But I feel like after you recover the professor, the cases come one after another with little time in between. This is the downside to the timer system as it just prevents exploration later in the story.

I can understand the meta of understanding that going near the bathroom was the smart way to go, but the main point was that everyone was able to get up over that ledge but one person. She also jumped up the ledge into the air ducts just fine as well. Just frustrating when you don't know it's going to happen, and no way to reverse the issue quickly. I should have honestly tried to throw her up there like a zombie. About Thomas, if anything I think it's a fault of the designers, then. The hall family isn't developed at all, the only dynamic that was shown to us was thomas isn't as crazy as the other two. The game doesn't do anything with it. I don't see a reason to include Thomas being hesitant if it wasn't going to lead to anything, especially because the Paul Carson boss exists, even though he threatened to murder two other survivors.

Dead Rising is goofy, it's there because it's a japanese take on western culture. It could be a little awkward, yes (lets say you're a teen and your parents see that kind of thing). Imho, it's honeslty no big deal and it doesn't hurt the game's story or gameplay in any way. I think you took the story a bit too seriously. The Japanese tend to present our issues in pretty hilarious ways. Metal Gear, Dead Rising, and Resident Evil talk about these serious things in the most hamfisted ways possible, so they usually come off humorous with how straight faced they are presented. Metal Gear Rising Revengance talks about free will being a delusion and memes in the same scene in a cyborg Ninja game. People are seriously bothered by sexualization and the idea of suicide? Here is my take on the whole Ross suicide. I do believe it's more that Ross was in the moment where he saw there were no hope left for him and the only solution was to kill himself so he won't be a burden to Tonya. And sometimes people can be in the moment where they think all hope is lost and the only solution is to end it all. I think it's a bit more realistic in a scenario like this just like how the other survivors act. Some are piss scared thinking it's all over while some other survivors are more tougher and determined to survive. That's just how i see it as from my perspective.

One thing that I love Dead Rising games is seeing the aftermath of failing a case. What are the consequences? What the other protagonist have to say about, for example, failing case 2-1 by not being present in the security room, implying that Brad went alone to rescue Barnaby and Carlito got the better of him, thus he probably ended up dead (in the notebook, he'll be listed as Lost), he's listed as Located during the entire game, until you see his death cutscene after the Bomb Collector case. Or what happens if you don't get Brad the medicine? I would honestly love to see a video that compiles all the aftermaths after failing each case and seeing Brad, Jessie and Isabella's comments.

I think that the way the camera was used in the cutscenes was mainly done because it was a Japanese team. Sexualized stuff over there is extremely common. I liked how Isabella wasn't a damsel in distress, Jessie though wasn't properly utilized at all. Really she devolved into a secretary at a desk when she is supposed to be Brad's backup. DHS sent two of their best agents because they knew about Dr. Barnaby. Keep in mind that Santa Cabeza was a cover-up job and so they could have quickly assumed that Barnaby had something to do with Willamette or know something about why the outbreak occurred. So the government wouldn't screw around on this case and that's why they sent Brad and Jessie. She seems poorly written. At least Stacey was far better written
@siljorfag
@siljorfag 2 жыл бұрын
@@Deadsea_1993 I totally agree here. And about Jessie's character, she was just wasted. I would've prefered her role to be more important, just like that DR1 trailer which shows her running in the maintenance tunnels, probably from Carlito's truck, and somehow gets killed either by zombies or Carlito himself and Frank's find her bloody corpse. In the final game it was Brad that got killed in the tunnels... Jessie after case 1-1 spents literally the entire game sitting in that desk, doing nothing at all and (at first) treating Frank like shit. And managed to get infected in a place where's literally no zombies, and a decrepit old man was able to get the upperhand on her, getting herself infected with no bite or scratch. What a waste of a potentally good character.

Love the analysis. I few things to add (and If I misinterpreted what you said please forgive me): - Speaking of technical difficulties, my PS4 digital copy seems to crash at random, which is aggravating when trying to get the 7-day survivor trophy. - I didn't think the sexual tones were that distracting. I will agree in some instances they can be awkward and seem out of place. - If you don't answer Otis's calls, the survivor(s) and psychopath(s) of the scoops will still spawn, but you won't be notified right away. If you know when and where a scoop activates, you don't need Otis's call. However, I believe the survivor mutinies with Ronald and Kendal need Otis's call to activate. - I saw one theory stating that the convicts respawn to give the idea that multiple prisoners are running amuck in Willamette. A nice theory, but I still think the convicts respawning are annoying. - I actually think the psychopaths in DR1 are the best of the series (DR2 is a close second). They have awesome themes, unique attacks, and a variety of attacks and gimmicks. My only nitpicks are that after you acquire Adam's chainsaw they are kind of easy and the story psychopaths (Larry and Steven) seem out of place and a bit too comical. I do think it is cool that some psychopaths are foreshadowed by survivors in prior scoops: one survivor, David, mentions being shot by a supermarket manager and Ross says he was shot while rescuing his girlfriend (which many people assume Jo shot him bc in her opening cutscene she says Kay attracted "another" man). Also, another cool touch is that zombies won't spawn in some areas while certain scoops are active, giving the impression the psychos are fending them off: zombies won't spawn outside the hardware store when Cliff is alive (I thought he only killed zombies bc he captured certain survivors) and zombies won't spawn when Adam has the Space Rider machine on overdrive. Because not all the psychos are truly crazy like in the later games, I like to classify them in certain groups: 1) The ones who were pushed over the edge by the outbreak: Adam. Larry, Steven, and Cliff 2) The ones who are just defending themselves: Cletus and the snipers (which I think are a strange addition bc they are the only psychos without a theme or ending cutscene). 3) The ones taking advantage of the outbreak to fulfill their own desires or just cause chaos: the convicts, Jo, Paul, Sean 4) The ones who are neither of the above and are just d-bags: Kent, Brock, and Sean (possibly)

1:07:37 might've already been answered but when the military arrived they unsealed the door that otis welded shut in the beginning. You can actually interact with it and see it opens now at the end of the game. Thus zombies could wander in from the mall and eventually make it up to the roof. As for why there are zombies despite the military clearing them out, they likely didn't clear out the entire town just the mall. More hordes could have been coming in after they left thinking they got everyone. Yeah there's a lot of holes to poke into this story, but that's the case for literally all forms of fiction if you try hard enough. I don't think it's worth it to dig into any narrative this much asking for explanations to everything let alone a zombie game from 2006 that has an action movie style story. Great stories aren't great because they're flawlessly made they're that way because they entertain people. If what this game presented narratively doesn't entertain some people then it's simply not for them.

Just finished up a playthrough of DR1 in a marathon session. Factoring in the addendum comment and my own experiences with the game, I have a few things to say: - I don't think the photography mechanic got enough credit at the time for making the game unique. Dead Rising 2 (original) lacked it, and I felt the gap when I first played it. Going back to DR1, the photography isn't just a cool feature, it plays into the game unbelievably well. DR1 is a game with extreme goofiness juxtaposed with extremely dark and gruesome moments. Being able to not just see things happen, but focus on them adds to the game's charm. It also helps put the player in Frank's shoes so much better than any cutscene; you don't just see Frank trying to snap pictures at weird times, the game strongly pushes you to do so as you go through the game, with the first interactive segment literally being snapping pictures from the helicopter. - The multiple endings, and how they diverge from the main story, are an interesting way of handling the plot. You have main objectives that can be failed, but doing so doesn't end the game. On the first runs, it is entirely possible for the player to just mess up (especially playing from level 1 and not knowing how to trivialize most fights with the mini chainsaw); when this happens the game clearly tells you you aren't getting the full story, but you're free to play out the remainder of the game. Even if you are knowledgeable about the game and can clear it perfectly on the first try, you can still go back and just screw around with different routes, letting you appreciate the sheer detail that went into the game without being crunched under the time limits. I really appreciate this, and the way it adds replayability that isn't covered by just watching all the endings on a youtube video. - It's interesting how Dead Rising 4, the game that effectively killed the franchise, went back to the characters and setting of the original game but many of the reasons it was received poorly are due to failing to do some things as well as before. Frank was always a wisecracking photographer, but was genuinely shocked and appalled at what was going on. You had ridiculous abilities like spitting lethal projectiles and being able to disembowel a special forces soldier bare-handed, but the flashiest weapons were a cumbersome machine gun off the convicts' car and a strange abundance of Japanese katanas in small-town Colorado. I think the series kept trying to one-up itself (combo weapons, combo vehicles, the DR4 power suit) in spectacle but the action elements ended up eating away the series identity altogether. - In a serious game, I would have taken more offense at some of the sexual/dark content being handled poorly. But the main inspiration of the game is a low-budget horror movie from 1978, an era where gratuitous sexualization and gore were major themes in movies. While Capcom absolutely could have better done a better job with challenging these things in a more self-aware way, it feels less like an exploitation of the 2006 market and more like a callback to 1978 cinema.

im glad this game gets both praise and criticisms. i would like to add a few things that you missed and share some thoughts. 1 PP stickers reward isnt random, whenever u open ur camera and theres a PP sticker in sight, a % will appear at the bottom cnter of the screen. the closer u are to100% the more PP u get. 2 Bomb collector is really annoying but there is a way around it. in the maintenance tunnels theres a key that gives u access to the tunnels from anywhere in the mall. the key is located in the back room where brad and carlito fight, directly across from an smg spawn u missed. when u have to do bomb collector, just go to the paradise plaza bathroom and enter the door near the bathrooms and youll be underneath paradise w a white sedan. this REALLLYY helps out for bomb collector but if someones playing for the first time or doesnt know about the key it does make the mission difficult. 3 im not sure if this really counts but if u grind 53594 zombies kills u get the real mega buster which shreds bosses from range, and if u survive 5 days in infinity mode, u get the laser sword, which is the strongest weapon in the game, but actually getting these weapons is really tiring but when u get access to them they are quite a treat to have. 4 i agree a bit w the "sexualization" but mostly when it comes to pictures and journalism especially since journalism isnt really the most moral thing to do, and no better than kents mission is this shown, where he takes a picture of a girl who seemingly doesnt know shes being photographed to frank, AND requires an erotic photo of a woman to prove "ur a pro." not to mention the most reliable method to use for kents mission is to photograph jesse as she cares for brad. a way to go around this is to accept cheryls sidequest and take her pictures and save them that way they stick w u no matter what playthru u have on that particular save file. funnily enough i think this is one of the better missions because the girl WANTS her pictures taken in a seductive way, rather than being completely unwanted or unwarranted but then again it was prolly put in for horny guys. also for a fun EE, i think if u photograph natalies crotch the genre is horror lmao. 5 in regards to the helipad zombies debacle, the security rom door that was welded shut by otis is open after the special forces arrive so they didnt come up thru the vents, they came up thru the entrance plaze thru the security room 6 the final part when u get into the tunnels isnt too bad but the boss fight with the tank is kinda frustrating but if u aim where the rockets come out u should be able to do more damage but my memory might be failing me there. also with brocks fight, i dont remember if he cant instakill u with his neck attack if u dont try to escape so be wary of that. apart from spelling, i prolly butchered some statements but these are the main points i wanted to add or clarify. i prolly missed a few but it shouldnt be too big a deal. i genuinely enjoy this video and the game as a whole and while escorting the survivors is a pain, its challenging and has stakes to it in ways the sequals fail to recapture and i wouldnt have it any other way, well maybe if they made them a BIT smarter

I feel like you react to the women of the game the same way so much it makes it sound like you don’t like them in general. If you, catch my drift.

I think the suicide survivor says (Whether on purpose or not.) something about you as a player. It is a collectable but is it a collectable to you? Do you care what's happening to this person or do you as a player only care about your level? IDK. I get if you don't agree but that's what I see.

I think that's a fairly decent take to be honest. The only downside is that for you to think in that moral decision way, you'd either need to have been spoiled about the consequences of giving him the gun before playing, or play the game twice. If you went in blind, it would be pretty shocking, as there's really no hint at what's about to happen if you give him the gun. The PP sticker showing up would tell you that for future playthroughs this is a collectible. I think at that point, if it's basically asking you to play it twice for the moral judgement to have any impact, it's a pretty flawed scenario. Kinda off the cuff though, I'll mull this one over and reply back if I have any additional thoughts.

49:48 Uhhhhh, what are you implying here? What else was he supposed to do? He had to subdue the person. You mount people and grapple with them typically to do so.

Some of your notes are really good and apparent. However, there’s points of this review where there are details you overlook. Zombies show up on the roof due to the welding on the door being removed. The story is supposed to be a B Movie spoof, it’s not really trying to ask you to take it seriously, it just has serious moments. Ross’s possible suicide only happens because the mission shows the player how you have to think differently with every mission. When the game give you time to do missions you can do them but you chose to wait..ETC. Although your points on cutscenes and saferoom inconsistencies are there due to the game not having the survivors part of the main story. But ultimately the game is a tech demo that happens to be fun and interesting. Although this had some more then Nit picky points about the game it was still an interesting watch!

I've had the safe room welded door thing pointed out to me before, and I initially did agree with them, but watching back on what said, I also mention that the military killed all the zombies in the mall before hand, and that's still true. After overtime starts the zombies are back to being dead everywhere but the park area. If they're coming from the clocktower, I still don't think there would be any on the roof. I appreciate the comment, I can agree with your other points to an extent.

That groovy jam with the nonsensical lyrics is just too good. I enjoy all your videos. Found you from the dying light video which I also agree is a masterpiece. Dying light 2 not so much though it was still fun for a one time playthrough. You should do a review of resident evil 4. One of the greatest games of all time.

Honestly it could've been better if he didn't hyper focus on the sexuality and the treatment of women it was a little out of place considering it really doesn't have that much bearing in the game as a whole he hammered down his point like we didnt get it the first time

Completely agree. It's the serious story and the goofy gameplay dynamic that made this game so good. Making the game a joke all around would kill it, DR4 was proof of that.

Dude, your seriously criticizing how this game shows some women meanwhile you can make Frank walk around in his underwear or a dress, your well within your rights to point this stuff out but saying it's a major problem with the game is the kind of attitude that's implementing censorship now in modern games rather than pushing the edge like they use to, resulting in 10s of thousands of games to never get remasters. Sorry for the rant, still good review.

I don't think this game treats its women poorly. A couple of them are intentionally portrayed as attractive, yes. They don't exist just for that purpose, though, they're important and respected characters in the plot. Those camera pans are something that lasts about 2 seconds, and would not even be noticed by someone who isn't overthinking it. It's not like the DR2 scenes where the entire shots are dedicated to staring at Rebecca's ass for a prolonged period of time while they crack cheesy sex jokes, lol. On a more general point though, I should mention that a lot of women enjoy being beautiful. There is nothing inherently wrong with portraying them as sexually attractive, especially when it's such an insignificant part of this game.

yeah it sure seems like a lot of unnecessary complaining because they happened to show an ass shot... Like who cares dude? It was made in 2006 by a Japanese company, of course there's going to be that stuff in it. Watch anime and see how much they flaunt risque scenes with women. But just remember that these days being attractive is offensive somehow, and don't you dare enjoy the sight of an attractive woman or else.

37:05 I don’t know if it is in 360 version but on the Steam port of the game, you can order the survivors to go to one spot and stay there by targeting and using the call function. This still doesn’t work great but somewhat helps in situations like these.

You brought something up in this video that makes the end text make more sense. The whole game series is about the extent of human capabilities when it comes to moral and ethical actions when trying to reach their own goals. It’s about greed
