Carlito VA changed but it sounds similar to the OG. the gameplay is sharp and unchanged so I'm happy and hyped for this game to come out as I'm a 2000s kid and dead rising has been a bug part if my growing up. I thought the whole point of Kent enthusiastically showing off an Erotica photo he has in his camera roll like that in the first place during the OG game was to hint at how much of an unhinged sleazeball he actually is before his boss fight. Now he just seems like a bit more of a harmless dork, and it makes his eventual leap to kidnapping a random guy and intending to photograph the exact moment he becomes a zombie seem a bit more out of character. I'm not trying to defend their decision and I think it was wrong to remove it, but if I had to guess, the erotica photo sidequest was probably seen as "objectifying women" or something. I don't think the point was to remove boobs from the game, you've seen Jessie's design hasn't really changed for example lol. But yeah, definitely strange times we're in where extreme and detailed violence is somehow more tolerable.

Man the voice cast kinda sucks here… Not to mention line changes, changing the requirements of a mission that’s required for 100% completion, possibly removing a side mission for a survivor that provides Prestige Points altogether, changing Larry Chiang which discards the late Michael Yama’s stellar performance (he passed in 2020 and leaving his performance in the game would’ve been an amazing tribute to a great performer), changing the context of Cliff’s background (censoring the word Viet Cong, which was the name for North Vietnamese irregulars during the Vietnam War, and removing “filthy communists” gets rid of additional context for his background and character which makes his explanation of what happened less impactful, especially if you’re aware of how horrible life was for a lot of Vietnam War veterans after the war), etc. It feels so watered down and sanitized. The game’s satire on photojournalism and journalism as a whole feels incomplete without a complete list of genres (Frank going to Willamette to exploit the situation there even before he knew what was going on for self-gain and fame was set from the get-go for Frank and the player to take photos of an exploitative nature). Even the side mission for Cheryl was different than most other side missions; there’s only a couple side missions in the game that require photography, another being taking a picture of the vent shaft door to show to survivors on Day 3 and Kent’s entire challenge requiring you to take photos of certain genres with certain point requirements. It added a moment of being a regular photographer at a photo shoot, what some photographers do or did before or after a stint in photojournalism if they went in that direction. The game just seems to have lost quite a bit of heart and soul. The b-movie-level of satire has been drawn down because of these changes, the voice acting quality fell a lot save for one performance or two (Brad’s performance is probably the worst but a lot of the VAs haven’t been directed well at all), thanks a lot to some mid or poor voice directing at the studio during recording. Capcom showing itself to be cheap while being willing to censor its games is sad. I loved Capcom for awhile, I’ve been a big fan of the first few Dead Rising games, especially the first. The first inspired me to pursue creative writing, voice acting and game development and to see its soul tinkered with like this in an almost disrespectful manner kinda hurts. TJ Rotolo’s performance amongst a few others inspired me to pursue those things and the game’s cast of over 20 VAs doing the quality job they did is rare these days. Not a lot of games have a stellar, large cast and can be as quality in performance as Dead Rising in 2006 has been. I hope mods can really save the remake from itself but I think the best thing to do is to buy the original game for anyone wanting to play the remake as their first introduction to Dead Rising; playing the pure experience as it was designed is important to really appreciate Dead Rising for what it started out as. It’s goofy and violent gameplay, the b-movie-style thriller/horror plot that takes itself seriously, the satire about news saturation, exploitation of tragedy and photojournalism and realistic atmosphere created a unique game not even the sequels can re-create. It was as grounded as you could get for a zombie game while being its own brand of action-adventure with the successful mix of tone, satire and immersion.

I agree the voice acting is bad, seems to me it's likely a directing problem since everyone in the RE4 remake also had stilted voice acting, where as I don't remember that being a problem in their slightly earlier games. And I also agree that it seems to be missing quite a bit of the original soul. Personally, I feel the UI redesign shows it off the best, as it feels really generic and sleek, where as I feel the more cartoony/silly looking UI of the original game worked better for the tone the game was going for. That and how muted and flat this game seems to look compared to the original's more vibrant look. I will say, however, that just like with RE4 I *am* glad that Capcom is removing some regrettable stuff from their older games. That being said, I also think they've gone too far with the censorship here. I personally am really glad they changed out the butcher, and am appreciative of them trying to address the rather sexist nature of the original even if I think the change they chose for the photographer was really stupid, but I don't really see why they would have changed the other stuff you mentioned.

It confused me at first to then someone mentioned it’s cause of the out of cutscene dialogue is now voiced aswell. In the original all the character interaction dialogue that’s not in a cutscene never had voice work probably did this to more streamline it. Would be weird to have the original voices for cutscenes but have new ones for gameplay

I actually love the visual changes, even Frank's new model I actually really love....But man, preaching to the choir here, and I apologize if this comes off as whiny, but I am very unhappy with Frank's voice change. The voice acting in general is a downgrade in pretty much every way, but Frank's voice especially is not it. I'm just baffled at the choice to not use TJ Rotolo's voice for Frank. Frank's voice is one of the most iconic aspects of his character, Rotolo has such a unique voice, it helped make the character so memorable. "I've covered wars, ya know?" Is a meme BECAUSE of the voice acting and it does not land here. The absence of Rotolo was legit one of the biggest complaints about Dead Rising 4's Frank...I'm sorry, but It's genuinely an insanely tone deaf choice to not include TJ Rotolo. I could excuse this for a new game, maybe getting him back was simply out of the cards, but this is a remaster. The work was literally already done back in 2006. Nintendo still uses Charles Martinet's voice for Mario post 2023, despite Kevin Afghani succeeding him. This is genuinely harming my enjoyment.

This version is not doing it for me. I feel like unless you couldn't get into the original and you need the quality of life improvements and graphical upgrades or you've overkilled the game to a point where you need something new, then getting this game makes sense. But otherwise apart from the graphical fidelity which kinda looks plasticy btw, the character models are jarring and not always in a good way. Frank looks like a disturbed child. Even the voice acting is noticeably inferior, it's like taking a bite out of your favorite pizza but it's kinda dry or bitter. It's more detailed because of it but it tastes off. Yes, the original escort missions were rage inducing, but fans still embraced them and made it through. And call me a purist but the original Mt framework engine's graphics were ideal. Whatever this is, it feels unnecessary, when I saw the original it looked perfect and it still does today. I honestly think the only thing that could ever use a touchup is any poorly detailed textures, and yes maybe a little more fidelity for the character models, not much though.
