Very, very clever. The proprietary bench dog systems are so eye wateringly expensive and this is a very practical, cheap solution. Thank you.

You’re welcome. And even though I’ve moved on to a proper workbench and even own an MFT for site work, I still come back to this method often as it’s so flexible and (as you say) cheap. Thanks for watching.

It is possible to purchase screws with a wing nut head making the assembly neater. Great little video, am on my way to my workshop to implement your idea. Keep them coming !

I don’t have a drill press and the wing nuts would get in the way of planing..?
@StrawbyteWorkshop Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. And yes they do get in the way if planing. I later switched them out for socket head bolts that sat below the dogs I made.

That’s brilliant, thank you so much for sharing 😀 I was regretting getting my Keter work bench as it’s a pain for champing but this will help me create a top for it with bench dogs 😀

That's cracking. Thank you for going into more detail. You could put another row further back and put a rail so that you can use an Izzy Swan style rail and wedge clamp for panels.
@StrawbyteWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
No problem Andy. Just responding to audience feedback. I do plan to add more holes. They take a couple of minutes each so I'll add them as I need them, I guess.
@AndyCPugh6 жыл бұрын
I guess as you are using threaded inserts rather than t-nuts that you can put more in in any position that you want/need.
@StrawbyteWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
Yes that's right. The ones I used were from Screwfix and were 13mm long.

Thanks Chris. Space is such a premium a decent woodworking bench wouldn't have allowed me to have the table saw.

Dear Carl from whom did you buy the inserts for bench dogs.

They're from Screwfix. They're hard to find but are listed as: INSERT NUTS TYPE D M6 and come in 13MM or 20MM version is packs of 50

I like this idea a lot, and could see it being very useful. But one of the common threads in woodworking worktops is to avoid metal, thus many of the benchdog systems use wood, plastic or aluminum dogs, all of which are soft and less likely to damage or destroy a carbide blade or a nice chisel. Still, some great ideas, and I really appreciate the many examples.
@StrawbyteWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. If I were to do the project again I would fit the threaded inserts from the underside. That would leave the top surface free of metal.

Had an idea to save sanding, use the hole cutter on the edge of the length of wood and then you have a flat edge already, also won’t get stuck in the hole saw! 🌲🦊🌲🤗
@StrawbyteWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
That's very good. I like that. I've got an 'Easy knobs' short vid coming (came indoors for the podcast before filming the hole-saw bit) and I'm gonna borrow your idea for that too..

Did you use bolts and threaded inserts instead of more traditional friction fit dowels because of the thickness of the top? I prefer to be able to just drop the dogs in and pull them out, rather than having to screw them.
@StrawbyteWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
Hi - thanks for the comment. So yes threaded inserts were used as the top is only 18mm. This was a project that evolved. The top made for better use of the table saw, the engineers vice needed a place to be fixed that wasn't permanent, hence the initial use of threaded inserts and then the idea expanded from there. You're right, of course, friction fit dogs would be way preferable but this approach works well for me.

Very clever. However, if you don’t mind a bit of constructive criticism, you can simplify your design just by using wing bolts to start with and save quite a bit of time and a few dollars in hardware.
@StrawbyteWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment and feedback. I hadn't really considered wing bolts but your right the design would be greatly simplified. In the UK wing bolts or thumb-screws are not a commonly available here. In metric sizes you tend to find only nuts.
