Thought you might like this. I was born in 1962, and in the early 70’s my uncle who was a mechanic loved mopar. He also had a chopper with very long front forks. (Easy rider style) anyway my best friend and I use to get in and play like we were driving in the 2 R/T chargers that were sitting in his yard . Neither one ran - I guess they were waiting in line. They were there for quite a while. I loved sitting in them and dreaming. One was that blue on this car with white interior. The other was copper with black interior. They were set side by side so imaginary racing with be and my buddy was inevitable!

OMG! It's story time! In 1983 I was 24, and living in the rust belt of Western NY. I was in the market for a Superbird. I found an orange Daytona with black guts and a white wing. The original owner was selling it for $2000. It was a 440, 4 speed with 54,000 miles. It ran and drove great, and everything worked. It was completely an untouched, all factory equipped original. I had the cash in my pocket, but I passed on it because it had 2 dime sized rust holes in the quarters behind the wheels. My friend bought it... parked it his yard for ten years and sold it for $8000. Yep. Wing cars were two grand back in '83! It sounds like a bonehead move, and missed opportunity today, but had I bought the car, I would have drove it for a year and sold it to buy something else. I had three more chances to buy a wing car... a Hemi Daytona that was missing its engine, and 2 Superbirds. The best one was a pristine Superbird for $4500, but after I drove it, my desire for a wing car died, because ironically, people in those days called you stupid for driving such an ugly car!

Back to 1983, just finished Basic Training for the Army Infantry and had a bonus check burning a hole i my wallet. See a 1970 Charger at a local used car dealer for I think around $2000. It was Root Beer Brown with a white vinyl top an brown interior. The engine was a 2 barrel 318 with an auto transmission behind it. I kept it for about four months and found it boring with the 318 so I sold it to another soldier. He never transferred the title and sold it to another soldier that I had to go to the title transfer place to get the car into his name. He got drunk one night and creamed the rear end into a telephone pole.

I appreciate the irony of calling it a race car when it has a lot of the 1979 "kitsch" that guys inflicted on cars which actually made it worse in every respect. Especially racing. I LOL'd when you mentioned that is didn't have ladder bars. A lot of guys that want to make a 1979 malaise era kitsch car today have forgotten that covering the back windows with free decals from the hot rod store was part of it. The small steering wheel.... I would have included the ladder bars as part of it, but now I am not so sure they were all poser on a Mopar. I would like to see you test them out on something and give your impression as to whether they helped.
@DeadDodgeGarage9 ай бұрын
I didn’t call it anything, I asked the question - drag car or 70s-80s street machine? I think we all know it was the latter, when we consider that it still had a small block under the hood. Also, I said it’s missing shackles - ladder bars are something very, very different. Shackles exist to lift the rear of the car slightly and ruin your leaf springs. Ladder bars are actually a useful traction device. The slapper bars that are on it are often said to be pointless on a Mopar, so you could also be referring to that. But I have heard conflicting reports. Either way, these ones weren’t doing anything without the rubber pads that engage with the leaf springs.

I'd weld up all of the holes and paint it B5 again. I prefer a black vinyl top on the '68 too , with that red, but white looks especially good with colors like B5. I wonder what color the top was. The white gives a real clean look - but is kinda grampa-ish. I also wonder if they Bondo'ed the roof seams, which wouldn't've been leaded if the car got a vinyl top I think. Bondo is bad because it doesn't like to flex like lead does, and that area of a unibody is subject to some flex.
@DeadDodgeGarage8 ай бұрын
The seams would’ve been leaded either way. I don’t know if there is bondo there, but the roof seam looked good and I didn’t suspect any tomfoolery there. I haven’t gone looking for filled trim holes yet either. But either way, I don’t think I’d put a vinyl top back on. I always wanted a red ‘68 with black top, black stripe and black interior. Once I saw the white in person though… I realized how awesome it was. I could never change it.

I bet you could come out cheaper using an a body donor and putting together a budget charger than trying to find b body parts to affix. @DeadDodgeGarage9 ай бұрын
Rear is 275/60r15. Front is 245/60r15. I don’t know the specific measurements on the wheels, but the rear has more width and about the same back spacing to kick the tire outward and give the dished look. I think front is 15x7 with 3.5” back spacing and rear is 15x8 with 3.5”, but that’s an eyeball measurement. The 275 fits with no problem. The old rear tires were 295s on a 10.5” wide wheel. If they had another inch of back spacing, they would’ve fit great in the wheel well and not hit anything. A 295 back tire is definitely possible on a Charger with very careful measurement and wheel ordering.
@michaelgrogan32248 ай бұрын
Thanks a bunch Jamie...my particular car is a 70 Bee. I want to order my 275/60/15 and 225/70/15's soon. I also plan to use the SS wheels and the critical question is of course backspacing. I ran a 10x15 deep dish Crager on a Challenger and they fit..barely. Surely this B body has the extra room out back. Incidentally, I hope it doesn't make any difference but I converted to 4 wheel disc too.

Then one day, there was a big storm and the wind tore the tarp off and low and behold, a very ratty B5 Blue 68 Charger, I've never gotten to see it close up as I don't know the owner's but something tells they are not very receptive to the idea of selling her, hence the tarp. The red one will like its new nursing home friend, its rough but still would be Uncle Tony approved, his orchards of pickins are likely a bit better in TN than in the PNW. Looking forward to future updates !

I'll bet that sheet metal is 20?% lighter than when it was manufactured.

Still, it IS a Charger.

I stopped Fixing Cars that were that rusted, You have to fabricate to many Panels, Or break your bank account buying them, Its a nice car when finished, But unless you have a full love of the car, Your patience run thin quick. I just missed out on a 69 super bee, I'm glad I did I seen the car , It was Real bad, The car Parted it out. Well Good luck Happy welding.

Where it already has hole cut in trans tunnel it would look great with a 4 speed shifter coming through. And 3 pedals always makes a car cool and fun.
@DeadDodgeGarage9 ай бұрын
I agree. Haha. I don’t know if I will be able to trip over a whole big block four speed setup any time soon though.
@ch357magdodge69 ай бұрын
Yea big block complicates things for sure. Either way a roadkill style charger would be cool.

Jamie, seriously! You are 10 times more intelligent than I am, and I know when I buy a car that rust is the most important thing to look at nothing else matters it doesn’t matter what type of car it is or anything it is how bad is the rust. I’m absolutely wishing for the best but maybe someone will come by and say look I’ll give you 20 bucks to pull that thing out of there and you take it.😳😂😂 looking forward to all your future videos no matter what you film!

I did look, just not hard enough. Haha. The thing is, if you want one of these, and you don’t want to pay $50k, this is what you get. There are no other options. I got lucky and bought this one before it hit Marketplace, or there would’ve been 100+ other guys lined up to buy it.

Love the Charger. A Coronet 500 is a better choice to brawl. The patina craze is better done with dry climate cars. If you had a good touch with a welder and money AMD would be great.

Oh don’t worry, my people will be calling their people. But I need to sell something else to fund it first.

You don’t really need to remove the rust. Just put the 440 in with a 3/4 cam and drive it. The rust will auto delete.

go with the slant six engine...it would actually be very refreshing to see someone build a really smooth quiet nice driving charger that just floats down the road effortlessly and runs perfect...the kind of charger you could just lolly gag around in all day without a care, not performance oriented but comfort and smoothness
@DeadDodgeGarage9 ай бұрын
I have that. It’s my almost completely stock ‘68 383 car. I would trust it to go anywhere. It’s smooth, it’s comfortable, and everybody craps their pants when they see it. I would never ruin it by making performance modifications. It’s my highway cruiser. Now, I have actually started to put together a slant six powered daily driver quality car on the channel before. For some reason I traded that to my brother.

I’ve got two 69’ 318 SE Chargers . One , a rotted parts car and the other nearly rust free but brutally dented runner …both had tictoc tachs 👍
@DeadDodgeGarage9 ай бұрын
I know it was always optional, just odd to see it in a base 318 car like this one. I don’t have a fender tag so I have no idea what it was or wasn’t ordered with beyond the obvious.

Yikes, brother! My favorite also, but wow. Did they park it in the bay? Hey, I see you have my 1st car up there ('66 Barracuda) That was a great car.

You got the parts Jamie BUT you have a huge panel job 😳. So was it red or blue 🤔etc . On another note point our 273 V8 in the AP6 VC and VE had more HP than the 273 you mentioned 😃.👍🏻🇦🇺.
@DeadDodgeGarage9 ай бұрын
The performance version of the 273 had a lot more than that here too. Haha.

There are actually a lot of ppl they don’t like chargers because they like the fords/chevys 🤮. I’d like to see about five or 10 chargers in front of your house, waiting to be worked on.

6.1 Hemi swap , very cool 69. Did small block chargers come with a front sway bar? I thought only big block cars got them. 🤔
@DeadDodgeGarage9 ай бұрын
All Chargers had them in some years, like ‘68. It was included with the “heavy duty suspension” that all Chargers came with. I am still not sure when that stopped. Definitely by ‘73.

It was worth the buy, it has the *hard to find black inside trunk taillight cover. 23:23. When I seen you scraping trunk then wildly poking that caused spark's over gas tank, I thought oh boy he's gonna catch new car on fire lol. Seat's look like late 1970's Van, I recognize Lug nut is for Cragar sst rim's 23:41

I’m not going to do any of those things. I did consider making my own subframe connectors though.
