I miss the time when record companies and A&R's didn't pretend like they knew what the streets wanted and artist had more room to be expressive and creative. Damn I'm old, I said Record companies and A&R's! Not being able to separate the rapper from the music is by design. Type A rapper is the actor who plays a street role for the public. Pretty harmless except for impressionable minds. Type B is the wannabe rapper who believes the life has to match to shoot em up and always high music. Type B rappers usually find themselves getting killed, dying of overdoses, or killing someone over alleged beef that didn't have to exist. Type C rapper understands the concept of needing to portray an image but carefully chooses image to portray. Type C rapper just want's to make music and buy Mom and Dad that house.

"Ownership" of an artist usually happens to new artist who start with a small following. And *stans* feel that their loyalty they had with the artist since they were underground all the way to music stardom, is what they perceive as ownership. Like when you find someone who's super good and you wanna put all of your friends on to this new rapper. No one goes as far to think the artist owes them respect for supporting them since the beginning, but many artists or entertainers, constantly say "thank you to my fans, who supported me thru the highs and the lows, etc..." so it's not crazy to think some people might think THEY are a very important part of the artist success. And with the rate off new artists emerging, the easiness to spread the word for a new artist you like thru social media, and the easiness it is to go viral, I think this mentality of "ownership" may increase to people who don't truly respect the artist, but only their work.

Y'all being disingenuous. When y'all reviewed Lasers/ Friend of the People? The discussion got rather personal. Modest Media took it beyond music. Mike C-Town is / was legendary for his Lupe rants. Had some female in a car calling him "sell outs" over production choices. Dead End Hip Hop when reviewing lyricist. Y'all sorta put em in a box. Critiques are more heavy handed. Joe Budden "All Love Lost" for example. Feefo said I quote, "Joe sounds good" but I don't want him in this lane. Like why does all of that matter, if the music sounded good? Complaining about a style change isn't entitlement though. Entitlement is literally: feeling that you are owed something without having put any work into why you think you deserve something. Wanting someone to not have changed a style isn't entitlement, it's disagreeing with the change they've taken. It has nothing to do with a generation gap and everything to do with the natural human trait of liking things to remain the same.

Something to add to the conversation... I have a friend who never gave Lupe a chance after finding out he didn't skate. Something totally unrelated to the music made the music lose it's value in his mind. To me that's what make Lupe great though... he is just a guy from Chicago but through his intellect is able to put him self in so many different peoples shoes and create compelling music that gives you insight into different worlds.

Supporting an artist seriously, is a form of investment. No we dont own them but if 1000 ppl saying your music is lacking they can't ALL be lying. . .
@scarecrowzw9 ай бұрын
Thought I would revisit this one. As artists, we have the need/mandate to create. Our creations come from places where most people dare not venture. It's a navigation in murky waters in which every attempt takes a unique route. Some will say critiquing draws refined attention to projects whilst an artist may view it differently. The creation of a body of work that is revered and puts the artist on a pedestal of critics/fans is precarious. We often feel pigeonholed, and it becomes a difficult thing to escape the formula for success. "I 'm an artist, and I'm sensitive about my shit!" Context may be misconstrued, but art is subjectively consumed. The internet has made it a popularity contest via grouped opinions. It's great to be noticed, yet there is freedom in flying under the radar. Expression becomes less audible once all eyes are on the creative mind. We don't want separation from our craft. When you say "my favourite" artist ought to... You imply that I am now in the vice of your nostalgia because of a good time in your reference to experiencing my work. #scarecrowzw

One of the biggest reasons I left music school was that mentality of artists as a class of people SOOOOO separate from the rest of society. I can't deal with other musicians. I'm gonna hear Lupe out but I just get a gut-reaction when artists start in on that "omg we give you the world and you don't appreciate us because you'll never understand or be one of us" type of rhetoric. Lupe could've came at anybody hell not even this channel anybody but he reflected his feelings to dehh. And thats gotta mean something. I feel Lupe reaches for higher understanding in all situations n dgaf what the surface is cs in all honesty everything he does he feels is part of him his art cs he dnt need fans to govern what he is looking for or need or tell him how to be n his universe. Dehh isnt perfect but it is hip hop culture n it does reflect the days bein wit da homies n reflecting on same convos jokes or not...misunderstandings or not...its bigger than the title of this video n i think it was meant for just what it caused which is another real dehh conversation rather if its what lupe liked or not n if lupe wants to understand it he will but dont guarantee a response n dnt feel bad if he doesnt. This is just another blessing dehh needed to grow bc it shows that if artist care they watch...n all artist who have fucked with yall are "hip hop" lets be real they are watching n i dnt believe for a second lupe thinks dehh is bad for culture nor hip hop illiterate. Not everybody can do what you guys do for the culture n yall didnt have to. Keep ya head up Myke u didnt take an L u took a win for something bigger than disappointment or critique. Cant say i know how it feels but I do know Mya hmu after i told her i was a die hard fan n that lets me know when i spoke into the universe "im going to reach people" i knew the universe was going to respond. #lawsofattraction N it may not be the response we want but it was a response needed in this season....not just for myke but for dehh. It's disappointing that Lupe would use DEHH as a vessel for his critiques of music criticism. To celebrate The Company Man, when Justin celebrates DEHH for their integrity, shows that he is entirely disinterested in this ensemble. He's only interested in proving a point. If he cared about "Super Facts", he would have done his due diligence and listened to the entire conversation or watched their other content. There is no way that he even goes to Instagram, regarding grievances about this group, if he had done an ounce of research about their approach to hip hop criticism.

his point about some critics and attacking the artists rather than the music is correct, and there are several examples of the guys in DEHH doing so to artists including Lupe himself. Granted, they changed drastically in the last couple of years and their reviews are much better now but I won't be mad at an artist for taking an issue with the way they make or used to make their content.

Mylo How? All of the Lupe reviews have been accurate...Lupe is turning into Jay Electronica, a Talented MC with no relevance
@omaralmalky62137 жыл бұрын
Tawanda Batana Accurate in terms of what? Their assessment of the music? I don't think accuracy can be associated with a review because it's mostly subjective. Them assassinating the artist's character? That simply should never be a part of a music review and i think every critic would agree. The part about relevance, you're right, Lupe is not in the mainstream eyes like he used to be but I listen to and respect so many underground and indie artists to really care about relevance or let it affect my opinion of an artist.
@TawandaTD977 жыл бұрын
Mylo They assessed Why Lupe Lies about his music.... Why he thinks he's better than he is... Lupe is very pretentious that's a fact which is why he fell off so bad.. Hes a great rapper and has some amazing albums but he doesn't feel he has to explain his music which is arrogant because every legendary artist such as Michael Jackson, Prince, David Bowe and so on so Explain thier art.

this is a perfect example of clarity in presentation ... sometimes you, as an individual, you may have to ensure that what you put out (what you say) should be thought thru ... bcuz this obvious misunderstanding, leaves the opening for people to be offended ... u have to be responsible for what you say ... tranquility ✌ wl

And if you watched the whole IG story, you'd know he said he's just fucking around before he goes on stage. He might be serious but he probably wasn't articulate. And Lupe wasn't attacking this channel, he was speaking in general.

Myke always got some shit to say about "kids these days". Like how many you actually know anyway??
@xMiDniTe177 жыл бұрын
I feel really bad for Myke. It was not his intention at all to make that statement. Considering the whole show revolves around unscripted dialogue, a small mistake like forgetting to say 'favourite' in between 'my' and 'artist' once at the beginning on the video seems like a reasonable mistake. He shouldn't have been attacked for something like that. I've been watching DEHH for YEARS and I know for sure that Myke and Lupe completely share the same opinion regarding this topic. It's quite unfortunate man.. I kinda wished Lupe watched the entire video. He would've understood and I think he'd have a lot of respect for the DEHH crew and especially Myke.

Two things 1. I’m pretty sure this isn’t the first time Lupe has subbed y’all, he’s spoken directly to assertions y’all made about his career and artistry ( granted most of this is old) 2. As critics (even begrudgingly so) it is y’all job to convey a clear point at all times it was a choice for that section to be used at the beginning of the video if that’s what is used as a preview you can’t be surprised or expect people to not draw conclusions based on just that (it’s just like clickbait not as egregious but still clickbait).
@gameflymc33743 жыл бұрын
Very late but I have to strongly disagree with your 2nd point. I get that it was used as a preview and it contained a point that, out of context, was a highly contentious issue for Lupe, but he shouldnt be drawing conclusions just because he feels very strongly about this point. He doesn’t understand that this preview isn’t highlighting that issue but instead highlighting a different point that discussed in the video. But either way I dont think dehh are expecting Lupe to not draw conclusions because they know that he didnt watch the entire video because if he did, he would be smart enough to understand the wider context of the situation. Him not watching the entire video is the problem that dehh have, not him drawing conclusions

I totally get Lupe's frustration even though it was definitely directed at the wrong person..Sometimes fans can get a little biased on what they want to hear from a certain artists and that can make an artist feel like you may feel that you own them. For an example,when Future went through his Turn On the Lights phase a lot of his core fans had a problem with it because that's not what they wanted from Future but an artists has the right to make the music that reflects where they are emotionally at the time..just because you enjoy the dark stuff does not mean the artist is suppose to be in a constant state of darkness..Therefore in that aspect fans can be kind of controlling instead of digesting the artist in every phase and enjoying the journey

Well said DEHH, Lupe should've watched the whole video before trying to call anyone out. As for some of y'all in the comments though, y'all are saying Lupe was in his feelings but I see people in here saying he sucks and he's a bitch, clearly you're in your feelings as well. Keep it civil and hear each other out, and it'll all be good.

I can remember Ken and Feefo being hesitant to like Tetsou and Youth primarily because they were still upset about Lupe's prior misses. I remember clearly Myke and Beezy praising it with specific details of the songs they liked. If there was any review that Lupe might be referring to it may have been that

If people dont watch the DEHH videos fully then you miss out the point of DEHH as a whole. And I think the moment when Kendrick mentioned DEHH about the fellas getting the clue of the original title of To Pimp A Butterfly is one of those moments what DEHH is all about. The music and the knowledge that these guys put out on reviews and to share with other fans. I think artists who DEHH are doing a review on should appreciate DEHH for building this community so they can get to hear reactions of critics from their fan base thats not coming out their pockets but out of their deepest thoughts
