Deadheading self-seeding perennials in My Carolina Garden can be an overwhelming job, and one I don't really love. Some people find it peaceful or relaxing, but with so many flowers to keep deadheaded, I usually find it overwhelming.
Some self-seeding perennials are particularly aggressive spreaders, and those are the ones to pay attention to the most. One of my examples of of those are blanket flowers.
My name is Nicole Roggeman, and I am a gardener in zone 8B in coastal North Carolina. Gardening is my passion, and I like to try new combinations of plants together. I LOVE perennials, and especially ones that get bigger so I can divide them. Since My Carolina Garden is in Wilmington NC, we have hot, humid summers, and have sandy soil here. These are all things I keep in mind throughout the growing season. If you like my video content, please subscribe, and stick with me as my gardens grow!

Beautiful looking garden and great video on deadheading, it was the bees knees. I'm retired and have a small garden and it does not take long to keep on top of the deadheading and weeding. Its nice to keep your garden looking well for the summer season.

It's so wonderful if keeping on top of chores can be a smaller task. This way it's not overwhelming, and dare I say even enjoyable?! Thanks so much for your message!

Hi 👋 I’m from Toronto, Canada 🇨🇦 zone 5b. The size of your blanket flowers & dianthus!! 😮. It’s so interesting to see gardeners from different zones. The daisies we consider them like weeds-they are very invasive. In my area-Lily of the Valley is a huge headache!!!! You never get rid of it here & can take over your garden bed super fast. Our nurseries don’t even sell it. Coneflowers are amazing & can’t get enough of them!!! Glad I happen to see your video. Cheers & happy gardening 😊

You are so right, it's amazing to see how different things grow in different zones. It's funny about the daisies - I was recently in Scotland and saw daisies all over growing like weeds and I thought hmmm, my garden center sells those! Glad we both get to enjoy coneflowers though - love them so much!! Happy gardening! 😁❤

Hi! Just recently I had to deadhead my newly planted dianthus. I was so nervous to chop them up, but they are already flushing out with new blooms! Yay!

100% get you on that!! Dianthus is a little tricky that way lol. Makes you wonder about it for a hot second, and then boom, reblooms beautifully! ❤️

Hi Nicole, great tips on deadheading. Question you mentioned that you think the a Japanese Beatle was enjoying your Dalia, what do you do to get rid of them? Thanks 🪴👒🪴

I use pesticides on the beetles. I haven't found a gentler remedy to stop that nasty pest, and really, if you don't stop them, they can ruin so much. Ugh!

The yellow primrose doesn’t spread aggressively for me but the pink spreads like crazy.

That's interesting!! I find they spread differently - the yellow tends to multiply in the vicinity of other yellow, while the pink seeds must blow everywhere - but both spread like crazy for me.

Thank you Nichole for this early less in dead heading which I really don’t do much off. I will be doing it like crazy from now on through. I only dead head my roses. Off to the garden to do some dead heading. Have a wonderful day and a fantastic weekend.

Would you believe that I can’t get my blanket flower to take off and do good.

Oh no!! One of my friends has said the same and I can't believe it! I am forever taking out little seedlings. They do like a little neglect, I find. I don't fertilize them, and since they grow wild at the beach, I don't even give them great soil.

Good luck with deadheading. Do you have weeds în your gardens?
@mycarolinagarden
@mycarolinagarden 3 ай бұрын
Yes I do. Not a terrible amount, and largely one main culprit. Deadheading is probably a much bigger job than weeding in my garden 🤪😅

@@mycarolinagarden I was wondering how can you keep weeds under control on such a large property🙄

I have no idea lol. I don't do anything special in that way. I do pick weeds for fun though. If I go get the mail, for example, my family knows I'll take longer to get inside because I'll pick weeds on the way back in. 😂

I am sporadic with dead heading. I am usually already dirty and sweaty from doing the lawn when I do. I just need to get out there with my little bucket and get to work!
