Since it asks caliber, I have to agree. If it said cartridge, I would say 12 gauge. Takes all manner of game, all over the earth, and much of what can be taken allows multiple daily harvests, whereas rifles are excluded from migratory and many other bird species. Also some four footed creatures are limited to one per day or one per season.

I would say that 22 rimfire has taken more game than any other in numbers

I agree, Tony. My brain was focused on legal deer hunting and deer when I answered, but if you factor in poaching and small game/varmints, 22 rimfire all the way.

I would add the .22 rimfire has shot more humans than other cartridges. And most dies slow deaths until after penicillin was introduced to the pharmaceutical market.

I was thinking this same thing. I have killed a LOT of critters with a .22 lol. Trapping, hunting and..........yeah. 22 is the one.

Every deer I’ve shot with .243 has dropped in its tracks with Sierra 85gr hp. Shot placement is the key!

I called Sierra once asking about .243 bullets, they said the 85 grain HPBT is their best deer bullet for that caliber. and recommended it above all their other offerings.

Also a fan of Sierra’s 85 grain hollow point. More than a dozen whitetails, several coyotes and an antelope have gone down to mine.

Anyone looking for a rifle for a new/young/smaller hunter, I tell them to get the .243. It will take any whitetail that walks (plus some others) and it only kills at one end.

With handloads the 6.5 Swedish Mauser easily outruns the 6.5 Creedmore and it also used the long for caliber bullets. Recoil will be a little more but no one shooting at game would notice. Most people won't off the bench either.

I accidentally primed 45acp brass with large rifle primers and decided to decap them. I gently ran them back through the resizing die and all 100 live primers came right back out with no issue. I wasn't able to reuse the primers but back then they were still cheap. It may have fired without issue but the large rifle primers stuck a little proud from the back of the 45 acp brass and seems how I didn't mean to use those primers to begin with I just took em back out. Thanks for the great vids.

Brilliant video and totally agree with hunters preserving wild life as it is in our interests to do so think you American hunters have best deal with public land and the tag system in UK most if not all land and deer for example are owned by landowners and I know as a deer hunter I have to work hard to get to hunt but got to say Ron videos are always interesting keep it coming thank you....

Re: removing live primers from brass. 1 - Assuming that the bullets have already been pulled, immerse the cases in water and stir them to ensure absence of air pockets. 2 - After drying the cases, cycle them in an appropriately-chambered rifle and dry fire as an extra safety measure. 3 - Inspect primers to ensure adequate strike. 4 - Decap and don't forget your safety glasses.

I’m with you on wood on blue steel. Beautiful classic look and Walnut is beautiful but so is Maple, even birch can be made attractive too. Had a wood laminate stock that had that ugly paint on finish from the 80’s and stripped it down and made a beautiful stock out of it. Saw a video couple years ago that disproved the oil and water myths. Either put the cases in the gun and pop them or gently push them out

30-30 was my first deer rifle killed lots of deer with it, cant go wrong for a bush gun. Killed four in one sit on top of a hollow they didnt know which way to run. 1976 gold trigger jm marlin 336 lever action follow up

30-30 is a fabulous cartridge but I am guessing that it is not often used on squirrel or rabbit.

I saw a coyote for the first time in FLA about 15 years ago while visiting my old childhood homestead. Had never even heard of "calling coyotes" until I got out West in the early 1980's - much less seen one.

The 303 British easily has taken more game with it's use in Africa and Canada. From Deer Moose Impala to Elephant it has taken them all.

Let's not forget the 7.62X39, kind of 30 caliber. Not popular for hunting in North America, but has poached tons of game in Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia. Caliber of choice in the 3rd world. Cheers, Jeff

I've personally used it with soft points very effective on whitetails, in my opinion. Use it most often these days on Coyotes. As with any caliber shot placement is key!!

🗣I am OLD SCHOOL. I have always heard the old .30-30 WIN has killed more deer than any other cartridge. Notice I didn’t say CALIBER. (Plus elk, hog, bear, …. When the 30/30 WIN came out hunters used it on most everything in North America S/F 🇺🇸

Two thoughts: (1) .243 works fine on deer in my experience using 100 gr bullets and can also be loaded with 60/63 gr Sierra bullets for coyotes and ground hogs and the like; (2) I think .22 or .30-06 have taken the most deer (though I know a LOT of people who use .270 Win).

Honestly 30-30 is a good call world wide but honestly my game across the globe has fell to the 7x57mm. Jot my first choice for a lot of game. But it does the job when placed in the right spot. Side note I am an American hillbilly persay. And I do love the 7mm that size and the many variations on that caliber. Will do pretty much anything you ask.

As for my guess on what cartridge has taken the most game? Here in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri it’s gotta be the .22 Long Rifle without a doubt. When I was a kid I knew men that would absolutely drop a whitetail in a heartbeat with a .22! Since America is unlike Europe where it’s illegal to own a military cartridge, here whatever the military uses is soon to follow into the hands of the average American hunter & for my money it’s the .30-06’ without a doubt. The .30-30 Win is a most resounding 3rd place due to it’s inexpensive costs, lever actions & overall ballistics that allowed for most hunters to use it because most hunters don’t set on top of a 80acre field hunting. Most guys use the woods & that’s where the .30-30 Win., shines!

What are thoughts on game management introducing wolves or predatory species and their effect on game in places where they did not exist in central Wyoming, heard a friend getting upset about that. I did not know anything about that example, so I just listened. Wanting other thoughts from other western (more west than North Carolina) states.

Awesome video ron. I am left eye dominant and right hand dominant but when I shoot a rifle I use my left hand I shoot a handgun I use my right hand. I had instructors trying to teach me but it just wouldn't stick they said just keep doing what I'm doing I hit my target but my friends laughed at my by the way I hold the rifle.

He's talking about deep priming a loaded case with a live primal. Just put it in your load machine and push down on the handle which pops out the primal. I've popped a few primers in the process of loading them. The prime was not hot enough to really injure you. I guess me and my brothers set off 50 or 60 primers through the 70-some years that we loaded shells. But I can say that you got a live primary location. You want to take it out. Just put it in your loading machine and push down on the deep primer which would normally pop out the shot. Primal, it works on the live promise to and I've never had one to go off doing it that way but I had set off a few in the process of priming them. I'll text you so many times. I think now days, most land owners, hunters & lease hunters put out, maintain & provide food plots, minerals & essential nutrients more so than “conservation agents”, do currently. My Great-Grandfather born in 1912 told me that back in the 20’s & 30’s that when you saw a deer “you’d really seen something rare”. He said often times that if you were known as a joker or kidder and you said that you saw a deer people wouldn’t always believe you. In my 50yrs I can tell beyond any doubt that whitetail bucks have went from little basket-racks, spikes & buttons have went from bucks being a rarity, especially 1 of any real size & width, to it being commonplace in the hunting woods today. When I was a kid back in the 1970’s & 1980’s, bucks I see today and have let “walk on by”, like 120, 130 & 140 class bucks would’ve been shot instantly back then. The only time I take a buck these days is to cull or meat hunt only. I take spikes, or oddball bucks that I don’t want in the breeding/gene pool spreading their genetics, but other than that they’ve got to be pretty healthy for me to drop the hammer on a buck. More than not I’m looking for a young doe or a young cull buck to fill the freezer. It just goes to show you the difference in only 50yrs that’s taken place. I’m not alone either. Most hunters I know are the same or pretty close when it comes to harvesting deer during all phases of the hunt weather it’s bow, rifle or black powder. In my region of the Ozark Mountains of Missouri, Conservation Agents are primarily consumed with trying to lure a potential “road-hunter”, or someone that doesn’t partake in that kind of hunting but given the opportunity to harvest a massive buck, no ones around, on a dirt road they take a shot at a buck because it’s so big they couldn’t resist it. If anyone has ever drove down a road & you see a monster buck with your rifle in the truck it’s “crossed your mind”, regardless if you followed through with it. Unfortunately that is what most conservation agents occupy their time with here. That’s why I say it’s the land owners & hunters that are making the difference in the quality of bucks people are seeing now days during whitetail season across the whole nation & not just 1 or 2 states.

Deadliest caliber? My vote is for the.729, aka 12 gauge. Available in 1 7/8 in. to 3 1/2 in. shells. Foster, Brenneke, or sabot slugs. Any size buckshot or birdshot. Available in any action type from pretty much all gun manufacturers. Used on everything from doves, pheasants, rabbits, and waterfowl to varmints, predators, lions and bears. Oh, and don't forget all of the clay pigeons that have been killed by the 12 gauge. Has been around since black powder days and most everybody owns one (or more.) It has been adopted by every military and law enforcement agency in the country. And it more or less meets my second edition Websters Dictionary definition for a "cartridge."

Ron, here is a question for ya that’s starts with a statement of sorts. I grew up being taught the Row Weatherby school of thought. Faster is better. So this new shift to big heavy bullets going much slower has been hard for me to grasp. Why do you think there has been such a huge shift away from performance in speed? I can’t think of anything else that deals with speed that is going backwards. P.S. great episode!

Sako, I think three things are working against enthusiasm for ultimate velocity: 1. Hyper fast bullets create more bloodshot meat. 2. Laser rangefinders and known trajectory curves with scope compensation reduce the value of flatter trajectories. 3. Many still think wide, heavy bullets kill faster/better via larger wound channel.

@@sakostwwy1903 Speed DOES kill. I've seen 100lb hog shot with a 20gr bullet from a .17 Remington Fireball drop dead. I've seen 100lb hog shot with 200gr bullet from a .35 Remington run off, never to be found. Yes, shot placement is key. Yeah, wound channels kill. You know what kills faster? Hydrostatic SHOCK. Speed kills. I've seen my buddy shoot a deer in the ass with a 55gr sp from a .22-250 and it dropped dead. Anyways, you're dead on man. At least, hopefully, they won't stop making all the great cartridges we already love and cherish.

There's beauty in function. We had a group of four going Elk hunting . We sigted in Minnesota and our hunt was in the Beartooth canyon. Three had top Weatherbys with beautiful wood stocks . The guide service insisted that we go to the range after looking at the Weatherbys. I opened my case and he saw my synthetic 1989 Remington model 700 and he said " Leave it in the case"'. All the Weatherbys went off. one didn't hit paper at 50 yards. . Unbelievably we found out later the high-end rifles were not free floated. When I got back I told my dad what happened. He said " I always questioned wood making contact with wood. I was never sure whether the wood should be strapped to the barrel all the way to the end or not to touch it all. " He liked my rifle and he checked it by slipping a dollar bill down the barrel and he said "Said oh boy it's free floated" ❗He also couldn't believe Weatherbys weren't glass embedded. I paid about a third of what they paid and took my Bull at the longest range. Their rifles even moved again slightly when we got to our hunting base. One dropped his rifle getting on or off the horse and gouged the stock. Wood doesn't look beautiful to me since that hunt . I've never adjusted my rifle since. A firearm is a tool and not something to put on a wall. If I had a vintage firearm I'd replace it with synthetic and put the wood stock in a box . My bet is the 30-30 has taken most big after the Thompson Hawken .

There's no doubt some wood stocked rifles are inconsistent, but with proper bedding many are as dependable as synthetic stocked versions. I've owned and used many over the years. Most modern wood stocks are glass bedded and often free floated. But use whichever you have faith in. That's always the smart move.

@@RonSpomerOutdoors Some wood stocks hold up very well. Dad said the Germans wanted our wood and we wanted their steel. Dads model 11 fractures at just at the top of the grip . I couldn't find a synthetic so I had to buy a new wood stock. They sell a lot of them because almost all have the same fracture. There was a story about old lever actions that fractured and the Indians wrapped that area in leather strap. They are most valuable with the leather fix intact. Dad would comment in movies people swinging the barrel and hitting with the stock. Dad would say " You can give them the butt or punch with the barrel but your guns done if you break the stock off. Some things he learned unfortunately through the Hedge row country. He also found out the steel on the bayonet was over hardened on the M1 and he broke his in battle .

I've had excellent results with Hammers on multiple species with 3 different calibers. 92-gr. from 25-06 took whitetail, one shot through lungs. Massive bleeding.

Taken most game? if you think of water fowl, birds, dove, squirrel, rabbit. All the multiple limit per day game. I'd say 12 gage. For large game,yeah 30 cal something.

I'd guess the .45/50 buffalo guns.Number of american Bison in 1830 was 40 million.In 1889 the number was 547 in the USA.Less than that number were left in Canada.Total estimate was less than 1000 bison were left. During the 1870's our forefathers were killing up to 5k a day.The meat was left to rot as they only took the hides and the bones were gathered later to be sold for fertilizer. In one "hunt'' in the Dakoka's they killed 10k in a matter of 10 days. Green hides were bringing $2.50 each at the time.

South africa they say 303 britt has taken the most game. Guys still hunt with 303. I have one also. Still hunt with it and was made in 1949. My friend has one and the farm we hunt has one for hire if you want to hunt but don't own a rifle. They all have scopes modified stocks or synthetic and suppressed. Lee enfield no.4 mk2

Hi Austin, To answer your question, it’s “Gun Writers”. When new cartridges/guns/scopes come OUT, the Industry sends them to all these GUN GURU’s who test/shoot/hunt and write about them. The MORE they write about them…..i.e. just look at O’Connor and the .270 history, the more people BUY the product. S/F🇺🇸

22 LR without a doubt. Trappers will dispatch their trapped animals with the 22 LR. Possibly the second most used cartridge could be the 45-70 govt as in the late 1800's millions of Bison were taken with the Govt.

David, the launchpad matters not except for the Muzzle Velocity it contributes via barrel length. A 16" bl. will cost some fps and velocity. That said, even at MV 3,100 fps, a 62-gr. bthp will be carrying a bit less than 800 foot pounds energy at 250 yards, so shot placement will be critical.

I’ve removed primers with my press by just gently pushing them out. Never had one go off that way. BUT PLEASE WEAR EYE PROTECTION . I’d be hesitant to put oil in my cases because it will be difficult to get all the oil out and any residual oil will damage your reloaded ammo so if your afraid of just using your press I’d soak the cases in some warm water that should render the primers in operable since the open end is exposed to the inside of the brass.

I prefer to use an old style Lee hand loader you know the ones that are for Pacific caliber It comes with a metal cup and a punch. it is perfect for getting primers out safely you just got to be gentle when you punch it out. I literally bought A whole Box of 9mm at pandemic prices just the see of I could do it Mainly if I can salvage primers If I had to. If you want to know what I was gonna reload with 9mm salvaged 38 special it was the most efficient round I could reload by salvaging 9mm I could use everything but the case.

Which calibre has taken more game? My money would be on 22cal. Used in some slaughter facilities to dispatch farm raised game species, used for small game up to big game. For numbers, I seriously have my doubts that the30cal has taken more game animals

ISSUE!!!!! As someone who has hunted with both the 25-06 and the 243, the 25 is consistently a more emphatic killer of game than the 243. On a good day with a good shot the 243 can match the 25/06 but not consistently.

Here in NZ the rifle thats killed the most deer would be the 303 army surplus Lee Enfields they shot millions after ww2 when deer were in plauge numbers and the government paid people to shoot them. Also that rifle and ammo were so cheap that everyone had one and went out to shoot deer for food.

Water works great to deaden a primer then I have just let it dry and it has worked just fine.

Mauser m98 is the rifle that has killed most people so they are probably quite common when hunting ... so any of their calibers 7.57 or 8.57 I would think they are on top.

Doug, I think the 22 LR is correct (I was thinking big game only when I made this video, duh!) but in centerfires it might be 30-30 unless we count worldwide. Then all bets are off. 303 British might be in the running too. Perhaps even 223 Rem. what with all the fox/rabbit/ground squirrel culling in Australia, etc.

375 H&H if you want to include dangerous game in your hunting, 30-06 if not. There are several other cartridges that will do the job, but these two have the advantage of a greater variety of factory loadings in bullet sizes and types. If you handload, other 30 calibers, 7mms, and 32s/338s are also fine.

World wide the single cal that took the most legal game is the 303Brit and illegal killing goes to the AK47. They emptied Africa and Asia.
