Deadlock in Saxony: Minority Government or New Elections? Michael Kretschmer’s Options Dwindle
More than two months after the state election in Saxony, coalition talks between the CDU, BSW, and SPD have collapsed. According to Saxony's Minister President and CDU leader Michael Kretschmer, the BSW "unexpectedly" withdrew from negotiations on Wednesday, citing disagreements over a preamble in the potential coalition agreement. Kretschmer and SPD co-leader Henning Homann held BSW federal chairwoman Sahra Wagenknecht responsible, accusing her of exerting pressure to end the talks. While Kretschmer continues to rule out cooperation with the AfD, the future of government formation in Saxony remains uncertain. The SPD, still committed to taking responsibility for Saxony, criticized the BSW for allegedly breaking off discussions for political gain.
