Aronian’s position looked so strong, and then it crumbled in surprisingly quick fashion. Wow. Magnus was able to carefully prepare that f pawn break so that all the weak squares around his king were covered. It’s a great lesson, thanks Jerry.

Great analysis of a great game! I watched this one live on chess24 and thought that Aronian would take control when the d5 hole opened up and he started exchanging and maneuvering a knight toward it. But I missed the subtler point of Magnus positioning bishops and rooks to take advantage of an eventual pawn break. It was amazing to see Magnus just take over after Qa8 and the knight retreat. Your video lays all this out so clearly! Thanks so much.

What a beautiful position Carlsen achieved in the middle game!! All his pawns in dark squares, the way he coordinated the Queen with the White Bishop. They both played really interestingly! So cool to see a game where most of the game is shuffling pieces, with very little captures! It was a very elegant thing to see.

Thanks for the upload, Jerry. Every time i see a new breakdown video of yours i know i'm going to learn something. Some feedback would be to go more in-depth for moves such as 9:10 and 12:47. At which point do you decide that you achieved what you wanted from the opening and start making positional improvements? And are those moves the best according to the engine? I'd love to see the evaluation showing the best move in the position or you explaining why it is the best move in said position. Also if a side makes a slight positional inaccuracy i'd love to see what the engine suggests otherwise. Some write off computer analyses as too complicated whereas to perfect our game we need to understand those moves better. Much love!

What happens if black plays 28…Bxa4?
@julek943 жыл бұрын
It was a good move - black gets a pawn and white gets some time (two tempi - Bxa4 and Bc6 back) in return to improve his position and play actively. Carlsen preferred not to give that time to Aronian.

whats wrong with nd4 on move 10?
@user-svqmbiv3 жыл бұрын
After Nd4, I think white just trades knights on d4 and doubles your d pawns. Your d4 pawn will probably be a little weak and the structure is just a bit awkward I think. I just don't think it really helps black at all and it might give white something to play against.

@wirelessbaguette89973 жыл бұрын
Another interesting aspect of the early game is how much white moved his bishops in the early game. By move 15 white's light square bishop had moved 4 times, white's dark square bishop moved 4 times, while black had only moved 2 pieces more than once (3 if you include the bishop recapture on f6): the queen knight and the b pawn. These early tempi enabled black to get a crucial space advantage on the queenside that would not go challenged for the entirety of the game, culminating in the b pawn taking away one the the white queen's squares leaving her with no convenient way to escape the bishop pin of the knight on e3. I'm not sure that any of those early bishop moves were necessarily inaccurate per-se, but I do wonder if white had found some way to challenge black's furthest advanced pawn on b4 how the game might have gone. Thanks for the analysis as always!

Was Aronian's Exf5 a gross blunder? Seems as if he could have done a productive move in the position like Qd1 or Qe2 and then forced Carlsen to use another tempo to play fxe4 and then secure the knight with dxe4
@somewhere63 жыл бұрын
The problems white created for himself by ExF5 jumped right out when watching the game. It plays right into what Black wants. The alternatives have to be considered even if they allow F4.

Why is this opening so popular? White bishop just gets pushed back
@tongpoo89852 ай бұрын
Because it gets pushed back to a square that's pretty favorable anyway. Pushing it back costs equal time for both sides, one pawn move = 1 bishop move. White tries to prove that the pawn pushes become a liability because of the squares it weakens, and that the beautifully placed light-square bishop and black's weakened squares on the queenside are more of an advantage than black's queenside space.

You're not explaining enough. 28. Rae1 Bxa4 is playable. You should have shown those lines as they were arguably the most important in the game. If 28. b3, then Qa8 is strong because white has to walk into a pin with Qe4.
@wreynolds19953 жыл бұрын
I disagree, he's explaining plenty. He pointed out that the Bishop was pressuring a4, but said that in his view, the point of ...Bc6 is to control the Knight. After 28.Rae1, yes you could take a pawn, but why bother looking at the consequences of the pawn grab when the immediate 28...Qa8 is decisive? The a-pawn is worthless and putting the Bishop on f3 decides the game.
@JimmyJJJohnson3 жыл бұрын
I guess Giordano's point is more that we could explain this a little more from white's perspective too? Once white plays 28. Rae1, yes, it's well explained why black proceeds with ...Qa8 instead of capturing on a4. What's missing is a look at why white cannot comfortably play 28.b3, and why white is willing to offer the a4 pawn with 28.Rae1. examining the lines after ...Bxa4 is less about why black didn't go for this, it's more about explaining why white was willing to allow this, as this is why 28.Rae1 was chosen.
