Deadly Callibaetis Pattern | How to Tie My Callibaetis Cruncher

When trout are off the bottom feeding on ascending Callibaetis nymphs, this Cruncher variation is my go-to fly. The pattern descends slowly, keeping it in the feeding zone. To fish, this fly, use a floating or Midge Tip line, a slow five-turn hand twist, mixed with prolonged pauses. This version of a Cruncher is also an excellent searching pattern on any lake home to a healthy Callibaetis pattern.

That sure looks like a Denny's AP Emerger to me

It is similar to an AP Emerger which is a great pattern. I did some research and it’s English roots trace it back to the late 60’s/ early 70’s. The original featured a pheasant tail body and tail, peacock herl thorax and green well (badger) hackle. Cheers, Phil

I think I bought Denny Rickards booked for 6 months if it came out I've been using them Wayback starting whenever that came out which was probably in the early 00s I think. Consider using mottled turkey flat feather as substitute. Nicely tapered and sufficiently long for Calibaetis.

Hi Tim, I just double checked and they don’t seem to be available anymore. There are lots of great substitutes you could use including, turkey boots, bleached or dyed pheasant tail even hare’s ear dubbing. Cheers, Phil
