Delhi-NCR woke up to heavy rain on Friday, leaving several areas waterlogged. Traffic jams were witnessed at several places, while water entered many homes in parts of Delhi. One person died, while many were injured after a portion of the roof of the Delhi airport's Terminal-1 collapsed. Besides the roof sheet, the support beams also collapsed, damaging the cars parked in the pick-up and drop area of the terminal.

This type of structure is constructed in every airport and are being constructed. It’s happened due to serious negligence during the construction and poor maintenance of structure. Authorities should review this incident and take decisions accordingly.

Annual repair and maintenance or AR&MO is carried out every year on every Governmental apparatus be they housing, office building, roads and other infrastructure and strangely enough the secretary who sits in plush air conditioned chambers with flashy mobiles don't seem to understand the nuances behind such AR&MO. When this tragedy occurs they sit up and ready to pass the buck to other as if India is a nation of scapegoats. The first and foremost task is to summarily dismiss the honchos of maintenance duty forthwith under Article 311 of the Constitution.

Similar incidents have happened many times in India. There were cases of under construction bridges being collapsed in many states. In 2022 a pedestrian bridge collapsed in Morbi,Gujarat , killing 141 people and injuring more than 180 people. This happened on the day it was opened for public after completing maintenance contract, carried out by a company which had no experience in construction/maintenance works. Have the guilty been identified and punished? Doubtful. In the current case there is no point in blaming one or other political party. Failure may be due to faulty design, or may be due to poor quality material used or due to poor wormanship or due to lack of maintenance. Unless an impartial investigation is carried out, real reason can't be revealed. Heavy rain is not a valid reason for the collapse. Because the design and construction are supposed to consider heavy rain fall. It is wrong for the BJP politicians to blame the Congress party just because of the fact (?) that the structure was constructed during the Congress time. This kind of incidents will keep happening as long as there is corruption in the selection of consultants and contractors and the guilty officials are not punished.
