Many questions answered and the ultimate spider is the quiet achiever who was always lurking around. The eucalyptus spray I use in this video was a chance find for me and NOT paid placement. It will be curious to see if the company REACTS to the unusual use I have for their most amazing product. www.bosistos.com.au/product/bosistos-eucalyptus-spray-9

Leo, can you elaborate on the false widow observations? I thought I had watched the whole series, and noticed you mentioned them a few times, but at the end of this video it appeared as though you observed them to be more prolific than the redbacks? If so, that's quite a statement given the tenacity of the redbacks... did they coexist through mutual fear, their body silhouette making them appear to be part of the redback pack thus avoiding aggression, or something else? Perhaps a battle royalle is in order? :) I'm very interested to examine their cohabitation further.

The other mystery spiders added there on week 1 transformed during the 16 weeks. They were reclusive and often hiding out under the CAT toy truck. It was the audience that did the ID of these spiders but there were many names being thrown about. Put it this way they look very similar to the Redbacks but their rear section is shiny and not matt like Redbacks. The red markings are also totally missing. They were the quiet achievers in the spider tank over the 16 weeks, survivors is a tank of spider death where the Redbacks would kill anything and everything. There has been the thought form many who watch the spider videos that the False Widows are a natural Redback spider killer. You know that idea doesn't sound that silly now considering the most spiders left in the tank were False Widows. Put it this way something ate thousands of Redback spiderlings!
@leokimvideo
@leokimvideo 7 жыл бұрын
Also remember there was a 4 week period where no observations of the tank happened. This must be the time when the spider balance shifted to the False Widows. The Redbacks spiders must have become food for the False Widows unless it was Gonzo's ghost that did the killing.

Hey Leo! Hope you’re doing well. I just found out about something that may help you with the wet sludge at the bottom of the tank. There’s this stuff called “activated charcoal” powder. It is used as an additive for dirt in planters and terrariums. It can be used instead of regular soil. It looks just like dirt or coffee grounds but it is antimicrobial and fungicidal and helps with the moisture and the rotting smells from dankness. Great stuff. I think they sell it at most garden stores. Thank you for your videos!!! Can’t wait for ST 2.0.

They are a mostly harmless species Widows and Red backs. Only people ever effected by their bites are often already very weak/sick or already near death. Another thing that makes them harmless other than their venom not being designed for humans is that their fangs are very very short. And often can't fully penetrate parts of the body.

w/w is weight per weight. I worked in a Pharmacy and when something was w/w, it usually meant there were two solids mixed together (although, it has oil as an ingredient ... Chemistry can be weird). v/v is volume per volume and means two liquids were mixed together. You can also have w/v (weight per volume) and v/w (volume per weight).

leokimvideo 25% w/w means that 25% of the total product is Eucalyptus Oil. If you look at the ingredients list on majority of the products out there, they never mention how much of each ingredient is in the product (unless you're dealing with creams, lotions, liquids etc. from the Pharmacy, they list the % in either w or v / w or v of the active ingredient). Back to your question on whether it's good or not? Having 1/4 of a product containing the Active Ingredient (the components or chemicals of a product which are responsible for producing its chemical or biological {pharmacological} activity or performance objectives) seems like a pretty decent amount. I know the product containing the eucalyptus oil isn't generally used as a insecticide, however, to give you a bit of a perspective, "insecticide sprays typically constitute only 0.75% by weight of the entire product"¤ or other words 0.75% w/w ¤(www.businessdictionary.com/definition/active-ingredients.html). With any product having one ingredient take up 25% of the whole products weights, you know that the product will be strong. So when you are looking at insecticides, somewhere on the can usually around the ingredients list it should list the active ingredient(s), there can be multiple. Products that could be better are ones that: 1) have multiple active ingredients (as it'll usually kill more than one thing or it'll provide more than one insecticide in case the insect is immune to the first one) or 2) has a higher concentration of the active ingredient (making the product stronger). However, I need to be very clear that I AM NOT AN EXPERT IN INSECTICIDES, these are just guesses as these rules apply to Pharmaceuticals. Please, do NOT get complacent when handling deadly insects and insecticides because of what I have said. ***I will not be held responsible for any damage and/or loss due to any mishandling of deadly insects and insecticide, as I have cleared that I AM NOT AN EXPERT WITH DEADLY INSECTS OR INSECTICIDE!*** I hope this information helps and sorry it was such a long response. Thanks for the compliment in your other comment. You are not dumb!! I would have never known what that meant had I not gone through College. No need to be hard on yourself, everyone is knowledgeable in different areas and I'm sure there are things you know that I know nothing about!!

Well done Leo ! I certainly look forward to Spidahtank 2.0. A critique of your series, if I may... Fan-fucken-tastic !! I am, or was, or maybe so a little less, but still - an arachnophobe. I stumbled upon your series in week 2 or 3 while binge watching Monster Bug Wars and was hooked almost right away. Your curiosity about these wee beasties was contagious and I was quickly hooked and looked forward to your ( somewhat erratic ) next episode. Your presentation and growth during the evolution of the series was a pleasure to observe. From about week 5 or so you polished up your hosting skills and presentation. You obviously read and paid attention to your fanbase and commenters, as evidenced by your response to questions and suggestions from your fanbase. I think you did a great job this season and I really look forward to season, and Spidahtank, 2. I would only ask ( and I know you have a life that interrupts filming, but you're like the crack dealer handing out free samples to get us hooked... then look out !! ) - I would only ask that you stick to a predictable schedule for posting. OH! Loved the TL show mid schedule. You're right. Tons of shit you miss until you slow it down to observe. At any rate... great show, great season, great idea in the first place. Don't leave us hanging too long, we your loyal fans. Til next season, then and of course I'm still subscribed for new stuff . Good job !!

I've been waiting a while to see this video, it all ends quite ignominiously with a spray and a good night sister. I did wonder how things would turn out, been a fascinating study. It has made me take more of an interest in spiders I want to do my own spider tank but English spiders are boring, funny because I only found these videos when I saw a false widow spider run past on the carpet when I was in Hostel in Oban Scotland, I had never seen that black bulbus back before with a funny pattern. You are correct the red back is an awesome spider although we don't say awesome very much here. Will look into doing my own spider tank. I really enjoyed the Mercedes Benz spider video too, you can buy a fish tank with those curved sides from Amazon it is £127GBP they were developed to stop fish swimming round and round bending their spines I think. Love your videos keep em coming Leo!

Island Terror idea: get a large square tank, put a circular pan in the middle filled with sand(this will be the island for the spiders), surround the pan with hydrogen peroxide or water with Predatory fishies. This way the spider's will be surrounded by danger and will not be able to climb the glass and you don't have to worry about escaping bugs

You should put the spiders and sacks in one tank and keep the single spiders in another. Also put the victims in a mason jar or dispose of them. But if you keep the single spiders in one tank, you can count and remove them if you need to clean. I also would keep the eggs in a different tank for safety.
