I believe the director actually says in his commentary on the film that Harry dies at the end. He included the sound of a crash in the background to imply the van did not in fact fly off, and that the image of it doing so was Harry's dying fantasy.

Even John Waters' own films are fading into obscurity. No way could many possibly know of his older work, no way could they be remade either. To be fair, this was meant to be a Frankenstein-inspired thriller, with some Taxi Driver-esque mental illness thrown in. Harry wasn't supposed to be some slasher villain, more like an empty-shell of a man with trauma/stress disorder; no life, no family, etc... and it wasn't really advertised well to be a hit. Silent Night, Deadly Night was a much more graphic slasher film with the mental illness subplot,however, the trailer showed off the slasher Santa, which caused controversy, picketing, pulling from theaters, . Of course, many parents and OG Karen's would protest that alone. I've seen this movie on Showtime and it wasn't what I really expected. I did like the cinematography and the direction. Can't believe Brandon Maggart is Fiona Apple's father!!!! Also he's 88!!?!?!?

Harry actually died in the crash, the final shot of him with his van flying in the sky was his dying hallucination as the van flies off at the night. (You can hear a lot of breaking and crushing sounds in the background after his van flies in the sky. It's something I hadn't noticed until I listened to the scene more closely. If I'm wrong, sorry about it.)

Yes, I think James was right on target comparing it with 'Taxi Driver' because that's how I have heard the ending of that flick explained too ... (SPOILER, after losing his mind, killing a bunch of thugs and getting shot himself, Travis Bickle is greeted as a hero and everyone loves and admires him. I think it was Roger Ebert who suggested that Travis actually died from getting shot, and this ending is just his dream of love and acceptance.)
