When I first heard Deadpool was Pansexual my first thought was something along the lines of "that makes so much sense!" Like the writers you quoted, I figured Deadpool would do anybody at the drop of a hat. A friend of mine has the Deadpool/Spider-man comic you showed on screen and he sent me a picture of that page where he and Spider-man are trapped in the webbing. I'm definitely going to see if he'd be willing to let me borrow it.

I love Deadpool so, so much. While he doesn't take himself or anyone else too seriously, he's a stand up guy. He's been seen lifting his mask so that Hawkeye can read his lips. He's mentored several younger characters and taught them to love themselves and trust their own strengths despite the fact that he-- in canon-- hates himself and had fits of depression. He stands up for women and minorities. He was molested by his mother and abused by his father, so he sympathizes with a lot of heroes who have experienced similar things. He fell in love with a teenager, but chose to leave her behind because he knew it was wrong to pursue it and didn't want to hurt her the way he had been hurt as a child. He doesn't allow his masculinity to define it confine him. He openly has "effeminate" or "girly" interests. He carried hello kitty band aids. He wears dresses. Sometimes it's presented as a joke, but never with the intent to demean women or feminine behaviors and interests. So I can't stand it when some dudebro in a family guy t-shirt tries to paint deadpool as some mysogninistic, rowdy hero with nothing more than a killing complex. He's a lot more than that. While his pansexuality has never been fully explored, I do hope we get to see deadpool with a confirmed same sex love interest one day. Anyway, thanks for this video! It seems like an obvious thing to point out, but so many people deny it. Happy pride month to everyone watching, too!

Honestly i don't care about a characters sexuality as long as they're actually good and interesting. Like deadpool is known as the as the merc with the mouth with a major history, who just happens to be pan sexual. A character shouldn't be defined as their sexual preference, race, sex or religious beliefs because, to me, that screams a poorly written character and should really not exist. Like imagine if the only reason black panther was a big character in comics just cuz he's black. It would make him seem so much less than what his character truly is and make him only exist for a diversity quota. But yeah really those traits in a hero or a character should be side/secondary thought and making them sympathetic, relatable or interesting should be the key factors in characters at all times.

Bi and Pan are essentially the same in practice, but they can differ. Bi people can be attracted to 2 or more genders, whereas pan people are attracted to all genders no matter what. There's overlap, and at that point it's basically just up to the individual's personal preference. Regardless, what's important is just respecting other people's sexuality.

@chazzergamer
@chazzergamer 6 жыл бұрын
Random Cat Name You are confusing gender with sex. Sex is the biological factor that is determined by chromosomes, there are only 2 male and female. Gender is the individual perception that a person has of themselves, determined by how the brain is formed from factors like size, percentage of matter, amount of testosterone or estrogen etc. Your question is also a bit misleading. A straight man wouldn’t have sex with a feminine man, because they are straight and therefore only attracted to women that see themselves as women (cis women). A pansexual person however would probably have little qualms with saying yes to this person, even to the point where Trans people are a total option.

how does demisexuality make lgbt people look like jokes...
@chazzergamer
@chazzergamer 6 жыл бұрын
chargestone96 Because it’s literally just trying to take a common attitude that people have in the dating world and trying to apply it to a sexuality to get points in the inclusive crowd. Not having strong romantic feelings until you spend a lot of time with someone isn’t an entire new sexuality, it’s literally how the majority people of people operate. Not wanting sex with someone until you form an emotional bond is not a new sexuality, it’s just you not liking one night stands which many, MANY people agree. Trying to pass it off as a new sexuality forces other members of the LGBT+ community who have legit problems in society be mocked by rational people because of how they now have to drag along people with want to play off having more emotionally furled romances as entirely new sexualities.
@chargestone96
@chargestone96 6 жыл бұрын

I honestly think that deadpool doesn't know he is pansexual or considers himself hetero. I have read everything deadpool, I'm a big fan and I have always gotten the feeling that his non-hetero desires were more subcouncious than anything else. Another sense I get is that he doesnt's necessarily like men, just certain men that he knows well, people he already has a connection to. In all the deadpool comics I have never seen him be atracted to a dude that he didn't know personally.

THANK YOU FOR COMMENTING THAT A PREFERENCE DOESN'T CHANGE THE DEFINITION! I get really sick of this with bi or pan characters, when people whine that they basically have to sleep with everyone and everything in order to please them. I, myself, am just heterosexual, but I see this happen a lot of times with my friends that are bi-sexual or pansexual, and it really just pisses me off. Just because a person dates one gender more times than another doesn't change who they are as a person. But yeah, any way you slice it, DP has always been pan. No matter the verse, no matter the medium. So...people just need to grow up. If it so offends you, then don't read it. You have other things you can read, and let the people who enjoy it, enjoy it. I think honestly if people would just do that...fandoms would be a LOT less toxic and the world in general would just be a better place.

@ carl Just throwing my own thoughts out there but Ivy&harley being to together has kind of been there for a long time though the way the made it out in the newest comics was a little bad all and all its not something that ruins the moment. Where as Iceman being gay seem to be his only core thing.... I mean really I don't read any hero or villain just because they are straight or gay or whatever, I read them because their character makes me feel something other then "o so he gay/straight....... again he is gay straight,,,, can I please see him do something else that not about his sexual attraction, don't get me wrong I nice bit of romance is ok but I don't know many comic book readers that want to read a book thats just 100% sexual stuff.... we have porn and movies for that and comic books are not going to beat them at it by a long shot. But this is just my own thoughts, also the way iceman "becomes gay" was some of the most dumb shit EVER written in any fictional work EVER. Also feel the need that these writes have no talent if change someone sexuality would really do anything.... I mean that very low quality fan fiction right there, is it just me?

I clicked on this video already knowing Deadpool is pansexual, and I was basically assuming this was gonna be another video trying to deny it (like many other people has) even though it was already confirmed so many times. But I’m glad how it ended up, it actually had resources and references to the comics and the writers/artists/creators, so I’m glad how you took time to go and explain all this.😁

I like to think that while Yes DP is Pansexual, he has a very specific type. Which is adventure. Anything that seems to a fun time in out here scenarios will turn him on. It doesn’t matter if it is the heroic Spider-Man, the powerful Thor, the mysterious Dracula’s Brider or even the wild Wolverine. This is why his longest most intimate relationship is with death. There is no more alluring, intimidating or eternal adventure than what happens in death.

I've seen people that still didn't realize that DP isn't heterosexual after having seen DP2. I can understand people that have only seen the first one since there isn't really anything in there that alludes to him being not straight, but in the second one they make it really obvious that he is pansexual. I really like how they handled his sexuality in the movies too, often you'll have these LGBTQ characters in movies/tv where they feel the need to explicitly mention their sexuality over and over again, which definitely isn't the case with Deadpool.

Thank you for covering this topic and not shying away from "controversial" stuff. Especially what you said at the end of this video really touched me and I agree wholeheartedly. So. Thank you Drake. You're awesome! *sends lots of love* I personally feel with Deadpool in particular that threads the fine line between text and subtext, and would like to see more of the text. I do like the more recent Spider-Man/Deadpool run where it does lean more towards text without writing it completely off as a joke. When it's just subtext, it can very easily lean towards queerbaiting (which is a completely separate issue but still). Give me text and stop baiting me with subtext if there is no intention of making it text. I feel like Marvel in general has many "queer coded" characters that have never been explicitly confirmed as lgbtq+. It's something ppl who are familiar with the tropes and culture notice but most ppl generally don't. But I guess it would cause a massive shitstorm from certain fans if it became text rather than subtext with these characters. I swear several Marvel writers have secretly shipped Steve&Tony for years but I'm not so delusional that I'd believe Marvel would ever let any of them write anything explicit. :D I'd like to expand the definition of bisexuality (just because you did discuss it in the video). Currently bisexuality can also mean attraction to people "like me&unlike me" and not just "male&female". That's because, like you said, the language around this is fairly new and constantly changing. I identify as bi, but that doesn't mean I couldn't be attracted to someone who is non-binary for example. I could fit into the description of pan (which means "all genders"), but I identified as bi first, and I like it so that's who I am. Still, like you said, Deadpool has been stated to be pan, and I know it's important to many pansexuals that they have a superhero that's like them and identifies like them, since the term pan isn't very well known.

Bi (the word, meaning "two") can still work when it's attraction to "people like me & not like me" instead of "men&women". I personally identify as bi, even though I could just as easily fit into the definition of pan. But I was bi first, I'm comfortable with it and it just feels who I am so I don't see a reason to change it. Also, Spider-Man/Deadpool is seriously good. It's hilarious and surprisingly sweet at times. :p

@BobSmith-tm2kj 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've heard that explanation of it before, but it doesn't seem to be its original intent. Kinda like taking an acronym and adding the meaning AFTER you come up with the word. But yeah, I agree that it works well :3 Kind of a shame that language often doesn't keep up with modern times. Also, seeing as I've only really seen the movies and played some games of both the Spider-Man and Deadpool series (and watched the Spider-Man cartoons, god, his snark is amazing) do you still think I should start there? :3 I'm thinking about starting the sub to the marvel comics thing at the beginning of next month when I get paid.

Bob Smith i don't really read Spider-Man or Deadpool on their own but I haven't had issues keeping up with Spider-Man/Deadpool. Both do have their solo series that have been ongoing since 2015, and they are on Marvel Unlimited. For Deadpool it's Deadpool 2015-2017 by Gerry Duggan. For Spider-Man it's The Amazing Spider-Man 2015 by Dan Slott. (The numbering system for Spider-Man changes after issue 32 but Marvel Unlimited should still have the whole run in the same place). I have read neither though, so idk how good they are. But I feel like it's easier to start reading a new character from a recent run and then work your way back if you want to. But the recent runs are pretty good about filling you in with necessary info from previous stories. :) I think Spider-Man/Deadpool has also been pretty good at telling you what you need to know. The whole run isn't on Marvel Unlimited, but they have it upto issue 23 atm. :p
@lindadaa
@lindadaa 6 жыл бұрын
Bob Smith And to the language question: yeah it wasn't its original intent, but languge changes constantly. In the end it's how a word is used that defines the meaning. And some words have multiple meanings, some newer, some older. I think the current intent does matter a bit more than original intent but that's my personal take. It used to mean men&women for me too before I knew what non-binary and other gender identites were. And now I'm still bi, it feels like me. But my definition of my sexuality is more inclusive than it used to be. :3
@BobSmith-tm2kj
@BobSmith-tm2kj 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I agree with the language thing. It's just that the roots of the word are kinda meh. I totally agree the meaning has changed. (Which I pointed out in the original post on its current meaning) I mean, we no longer use decimate with the original meaning. Obviously meanings can change.

A simple way of explaining sexualities. In terms of types of food. Gay - I only want this type of food Lesbian - I only want this type of food. (Gay but for females. Bisexual - I will eat all kinds of food but I prefer this one Pansexual - I don't care. As long as it's food. Demisexual - I like this food more because I have a strong connection to it. Keep in mind, bisexual isn't for just male and female. And that the stereo type that they don't believe in non-binary people isn't true. Some are like that, but not all. Pansexual = don't care. They do not care about what gender a person is, if they love them. They love them. No questions asked. Bisexual = Yeah I like male, female and everything in between. But I more prefer (whatever gender).

I identify as bisexual/pansexual (they're the same thing, do your research) and personally, Deadpool serving as pansexual representation doesn't sit right with me. I feel like Deadpool being pan only works if Wade Wilson was pan before he became Deadpool. Otherwise, that sends the harmful message of pansexual = mentally unstable. I'm not saying Deadpool can't be both but he shouldn't be pan because of his mental instability. Additionally, he shouldn't feel embarrassed about who he is attracted to and his attraction to people other than women shouldn't be played as a joke. Also, the quote "constant flux" really doesn't sit well with me because sexuality doesn't really work that way? Like your attraction can be fluid but that more means that you are attracted to all genders or don't care about gender, not your attraction is always changing. "Anything with a pulse" also makes me feel a bit sick because saying that makes Deadpool, the most popular pan representation in Marvel, sound like a sex addict and that just perpetuates the stereotype of pansexuality and bisexuality. I'm not saying Deadpool is bad representation, I'm just saying that the way his sexuality is presented and worded is problematic and his characteristics just enforce old stereotypes of his sexuality which writers are allowed to do but it just feels sloppy and lazy this way. Realistically, Deadpool started off straight and made occasional gay jokes, but now that Marvel is pushing to make him pansexual, they need to understand how it works and how to accurately and respectful represent it.

I think he’s great and funny, but really shouldn’t be seen as good representation to anyone. He’s a comedic character who’s pretty much insane with some touching moments here and there but shouldn’t be the centre of attention. Honesty anything he does shouldn’t really even be taken seriously. In one issue he loves chimichangas, in another he hates them. In one issue he’s flirting with Lady Death, in another he’s prancing around (poor) Spider-Man. He’s all over the place and that’s why I love him.

I know you wanted to mention the more heteronormativity definition of bisexuality to help more conservative people understand, but I think it would have been beneficial to mention the more inclusive definition of bisexuality, the attraction towards your gender and other genders to be more educational, because that can be misrepresentative. Both Bisexuality and Pansexuality can be the attraction towards people of all genders, no one is less inherently inclusive. People have their right to use their terms. Bisexuality has a history of being inclusive of nonbinary genders, the purple of the bi pride flag can mean the inclusivity of people outside the gender binary of men and women. But I think it's nice that the Deadpool creators are using Pansexual, which is newer term that's more well known as an nonbinary and transgender inclusive term, because it would give more of entry way for people interested in LGBTQ+ terms who aren't as educated on the topic.

As a biromantic homosexual, I define/understand *bisexual* as - having specific attraction to more than one gender/sex, i.e: same and other so it could be, same gender/same sex and opposite gender/opposite sex (boys and girls) it could be, same gender/same sex and other gender/same sex (me a biromantic homosexual girl liking other girls, and nonbinary people with female organs) and other combinations therein with *SPECIFIC* gender and physical sex attraction. Whereas the way I understand *pansexual* people is that when it comes to being romantically or sexually attracted to someone, gender/physical sex just isn't a factor. That's not necessarily to say that they're "gender blind" and don't acknowledge gender as a thing, it just doesn't impact whether or not they find a person attractive. Like, a pan person could walk up to some super androginous looking person and get all flirty and ask them out, and the person could say, "I'm a girl/guy/other," and the pan person would be like, "okay, and.... you interested or not?" So, they can be attracted to someone regardless of gender/physical sex factors.

Being a bisexual militant, the definition of bisexuality ALSO encompasses all genders. What we have today is that: panssexuality is the INDEPENDENT attraction of the genre. This means theoretically that there are no preferences for example. Bisexuality is the attraction to one's own genre and other genres. The "bi" of bisexual refers to the union of the definition of heterosexuality (attraction to the different) and homosexuality (attraction to the equal). Anyway, I love your videos from here in Brazil.

This means that people can be pansexual and bisexual. Some people regard bisexuality as an umbrella term for any sexuality that is defined as attracted to more than one gender (pans, omnis, poli). In the end all this is label. These definitions, as much as there seems to be no difference between them, matter to some people.

My only real problem with Deadpool being LGBT is that he feels more like Stewie Griffin as an LGBT character. It feels more "Bi when convenient", and it's hard to make a criticism against that because that can be real representation of some people in the community, but it just seems like having your cake and eating too to have a character be super effeminate to do gay jokes, and then in other episodes have extended straight romances. Deadpool doesn't really do that, and he only plays it up the jokes sometimes (well maybe more close to most of the time), and I am more fine with Deadpool being that way, but it just reminds me of the Seth Macfarlane cartoons and that annoys me. (Although, granted, Roger the alien as a Pansexual is more consistent than what started on Family Guy, but I remember the whole article of Stewie coming out and talking about Family Guy being pro-LGBT and it irked me. It's just, so many characters of his show are Bi instead of gay, and that would be fine, I don't know, maybe Seth Macfarlane is actually Bi, but you just strongly feel they are only doing it for keeping it open to make gay jokes.)
