This is the first short film in my "Dinosauria Animated Series". This film takes place in Alberta, Canada 75 million years ago and follows an old alpha-male styracosaurus as he defends his territory from a rival male.
This was a far simpler film to make in comparison to what I've been doing for the past few years, but I personally found it a refreshing change of pace because of that. I needed something fun and (relatively) easy after the nightmarish production of my last animated short film, "Immortal Machine".
This wonderful, simple film was a blast to make and reminded me that animation and filmmaking are still passions of mine. It holds a very specific and sentimental place in my heart because of that.
In fact, I enjoyed making this film so much that what was meant to be one simple film about dinosaurs turned into a whole series about them! :D
I hope you all like it as well!

You would be too if a fight that was supposed to be a dominance fight suddenly turned murderous. Old Buck wasn't just fighting to chase off the rival Buck is old, he's been through enough of them. Letting the rival live was dangerous and likely that rival was dangerous to his herd and siblings. Old Buck likely had enough of the bs and wanted to prove a point. Fight me and you will die painfully. It was probably such a unexpected act of violence its no wonder the carno's were surprised by the attack.

@@Quetzalcoatl_Feathered_Serpent True, if a male keeps trying his luck with the lead males females he's gunna pay for it lol especially if he's hurting them to get it; most herd animals are the same way. I do like that they didn't make buck overpowered, they clearly showed he was much older than the young bull during the fight (letting the young bull attack first before striking) but in the end he still won due to being in multiple fights thus having experience.

I really like how the Tyrannosaurids act rationally here. Instead of crashing into the scene like action movies, they are aware disturbing the agitated herd would be risky, so they wait until the loser falls down which they can prey upon. Kinda reminds me of lions or hyenas hunting incapacitated or weak preys.

Hence why predators ended up being more intelligent than prey. A predator must find ways to breech a prey's defense or overcome a trait they have. This eventually includes outthinking it, planning ambush or traps. Or logically thinking when not to attack, that its not worth the effort. In all of that. however comes Intelligence more defining trait. Empathy. The ability to feel. That predator reacted in shock

It really gives off that "calculation of risk" vibe you see in modern carnivores. They come to the fight because they know that there are going to be fatalities, which means they can get food without the risk of getting skewerd.

I loved the little details of the old buck. The branches with the petals falling down on him, like the ancient crowds of Rome showering their Gladiator champion with petals. And like the Gladiators, he bears many scars of former combat, the countless battles he has endured to keep his crown. His horn is broken, yet he still wields it as an expert swordsman knows his favourite weapon. Branches and vines drape over his horns, like the ancient crown of leaves given to the victors. Though he is old, he continues to carry himself with a sense of power and grace, a warning to any young newcomer that this is not an opponent you should take lightly, for beware of the old one who lives where so many young souls have perished.

it's a smart move - the herd won't defend a male that's already dying and defeated, and even if none of the styracosaurus die in the battle, at least one of them will be badly injured enough to be a relatively easy kill, especially for a whole pack of tyrannosaurids. overall, predators tend to prefer going for the sick, injured, very old, and very young. it's safer than going for a healthy adult.

The mix of deer and African elephant herd structure is also a really good fit for ceratopsians in general. The injury the young challenger sustained reminds me of the bull elephant natgeo caught on film after picking the wrong fight and subsequent death and scavenging of the carcass.

I love the moment at 2:32 where, after seeming to hesitate a moment, decides he will not give in, he will not let this usurper take the herd he has guarded and for all these years. “The first Daspletosaur arrives to the scene, his acute nose having picked up the scent of blood almost as soon as it was spilled. His siblings are close behind. He does not attack immediately. Any Daspletosaur worth the teeth in its jaws knows to give the Styracosaurs time to settle their differences first. Fights for herd dominance frequently end in severe, even fatal, injuries. Styracosaurs seldom go easy on each other, let alone a foolhardy predator. The Daspletosaurs have, across many hunts prior, learned to anticipate an easy meal once the victor is decided. This tactic is, of course, not entirely reliable, as sometimes both combatants do leave with their lives, but it has proven fruitful enough times before to be worth trying again now. The first Daspletosaur to arrive takes notice of the Old Buck. Usually he would be a prime target, age typically serving to slow and weaken prey, but even from this distance the predator can sense the testosterone coursing through the veteran’s body. This fight, it seems, will be far from predictable, so the Daspletosaur and his siblings bide their time. They trust that, either way, they won’t leave the riverbank hungry…”

The fight intensifies as it draws attention, even to Old Buck's 'rival', an equally scarred Daspletosaurus and his coalition of brothers, the Tyrannosaurs having picked up the smell of blood and sounds of clashing Centrosaurs. *After the fight* The Old Buck has reclaimed his position as the leader of his harem, leaving the loser an easy meal to the Daspletosaurus.

The baby we can see howling at 2:04 is the only one, along with the old buck, to have red circles on its crest. Probably his own offspring. It's like a cherry on top of this delicious dinosaur cake! I can't wait to watch the next movies!

The atmosphere and colors are breathtaking, and I love how Old Buck demonstrated his strength to the other Styracosaurs. Also, I love how the tyrannosaurid stood on the sidelines until the Styraco-tournament ended. The way it reacted to Old Buck stabbing that upstart was priceless.

At the start we could clearly see that old buck wasn't trying to harm the younger styracosaurus and was countering him to try to make him stop, then when the young styraco actually started hurting him bad, Old buck got serious and killed the young styraco with seemingly no remorse which makes sense as Old Buck gave the styraco a chance to back down but it didn't. The honest reaction of the Daspletosaur got me laughing to be honest.

The way I see it Old Buck only fought that hard because he was in front of his calf. The little one with the red markings was one of his offspring, and he sure as hell wasn't going to die in front of them. Not only that but he had to teach the younger male a lesson so as not to look weak in front of his family, as well as teaching any other males a lesson about testing him. Even the Daspletosaurus were surprised by the level of brutality displayed from the old bastard. Even with minimal anthropomorphism so much emotion is present in the dinosaurs, and I love it.

I love the Tyrannosaurid’s reaction to Old Buck impaling the other Styraco, It shows their intelligence and also shows that herbivores can be brutal as well towards a enemy.
@thatkidwiththehoodie

If anything, large herbivores tend to be more violent than carnivores. Plantlife is a much more common and easier-to-obtain food source than meat, so herbivores can afford to throw their weight around a lot more. An injured carnivore may be prevented from hunting for long enough to starve to death outright, whereas an injured herbivore can kinda just keep grazing. Hence why the majority of animal attacks come from hippos and elephants and the like.
@Mister_SCP_939

@@thatkidwiththehoodie Yeah, herbivores can be more deadly and violent, Especially when you consider the actual size of a styracosaurs, As well as how thin some carnivorous dinosaurs are, as they don’t really have enough bulk to push around a large herbivore, It’s annoying how people think herbivorous dinosaurs are all friendly and the carnivores are the big bad monster, when a styracosaurs in reality would probably kill something like us if we just disturbed it.

@@Mister_SCP_939 I've always wondered where that stereotype that all herbivores are peaceful and all carnivores the big bad monsters when we've seen time and time again Herbivores are a lot more deadlier case-in-point zebras those things are homicidal aholes

What’s kind of twisted is that likely this young upstart was an offspring of Old Buck. Brutal parenting but definitely a dynamic still seen in various animal species today.

I love the fact that everything happens near sakura tree, which symbolises the volatility of life, life itself and death. We can see group of dinosours living together under sakura, death the young one under sakura and the old one resting under sakura- one day somebody will beat him up, his alfa position will pass. These details make the animation even better! Keep going and thanks for uploading inspiring episodes like this!

it isn't a sakura tree but you analogy makes sense. The petals slowly falling off the tree while the sun sets/day ends might be representing the buck's days as an alpha are coming to an end.

Damn this was fantastic, the lack of dialogue let's you focus and infer your own view of different events. The animation is beyond good enough and they do really move like actual animals. I love the little look of shock from the Tyrannosaurs face if that's what you want to call that (again it can be interpreted due to a lack of wording which is good), we really don't seem to be getting any protagonists here which we sorely needed. There is no good and evil in the animal kingdom, except wasps. Really made me wish we got that voiceless Walking with dinosaurs movie now
