Absolutely brilliant. At this point, we get in Wild Bill's skin. For all the legend about him, he knows he's lost. And tired. For what he's done, he sees no salvation, and just wants it to be over.

His voice crack & hesitation is SO DAMN HEARTBREAKING. Charlie knows he’ll probably never see Wild Bill alive again after this but he has to accept it as his friend. I cry like crazy every time I see this scene. To this date, probably seen this clip 589 times. Niagara Falls every time 😭

It was noted by the time Wild Bill was killed in Deadwood he was starting to lose his eyesight and simply starting to age. He knew he couldn't keep up with the legend he'd helped create and was rather like Doc Holliday in that he wanted to go out in a blaze of glory. During the real trial for murdering Wild Bill, McCall was asked why he committed such a dastardly deed shooting him from behind instead of facing him. McCall replied "I didn't want to commit suicide."

Carradine has had a long career but this has to be his best role. He killed it and he’s great in “westerns.” Do yourself a favor and find “The Long Riders.” It’s about the James-Younger Gang and all the real life gang members are played by brothers ... the Carradines play the Youngers, the Keach brothers play the James brothers, the Quaids are Millers and the Guest brothers are the Fords. It’s Epic.

There is a God and there is a devil. Good has a source and so does evil. Without God the notion of right and wrong is absurd. And there are people who are clearly on the side of good, like Bullock, Alma, Wild Bill, and Calamity Jane. And there are people who spiritually are aligned with the devil, like Cy Tolliver and above all George Hearst. Don’t lose heart brother, this world makes it almost impossible to believe. But I can tell you with certainty beyond any shred of doubt, there is a God and a devil who masquerades as God. The Bible tells us the devil is the God of this world, which could not be more obvious looking at its wicked ways. I guess all I can really say is ask and you shall receive. Ask God with an open heart and he will reveal himself. I did not believe until 2011 when I rewatched Eyes Wide Shut and realized it’s not a movie about sex, it’s about spiritual warfare waged against the masses by the satanic elites who operate in the shadows.

@@juanvaladez5703 There is no 'good and evil', there are simply actions made by people which are deemed as such. There is no objective basis for 'good' or 'evil'. Even with god the notion of right and wrong is absurd, not only because of the gross immorality displayed historically and currently by many Theists, but also by things like the Problem of Evil. If the Bible is your flavour of morality, sure, but you might want to take heed given that slavery, stoning and child abuse were all suborned within it.

I first watched this scene in the middle of the downward spiral of my first marriage. It rings just as strong now in my second. It is the statement of one who is tired of fighting against what they have come to realize is inevitable. Be it age. Be it loss of love. Or the loss of one's own legend. In the end, it is the statement of one who knows that entropy wins out in the end, every time.

Bill is used to it, Charlie is not. Bill wants to save Charlie. Bill will use his own capcity to get what he wants.... Unfortunately he has failed. Charlie doesn't know this so is still hanging on. Bill is dead, the last tie he has to cut is with Charlie. He is choosing any day now, as long as it dosn't affect ANYBODY. The only other time I think this is relevent is the death of The Rev.... Knowing and choosing when you go. I mean it is balls and then some.

Is anyone able to give me a bit of background on this scene? I'm presenting a project to my class about "Wild Bill" and how his flaws are what ultimately made him more appealing and easier to relate to in the early frontier society. It would really help me if I was given some insight about the scene and why he said the things that he did.

As portrayed in the series-and at least partially based on real life-Hickok arrived in Deadwood tired and broken and anticipating his own death. His friend Charlie has slowly started to realize that Bill has no intentions of prospecting or pursuing any other productive avenues; Bill just wants to play poker, and he's become annoyed at Charlie's repeated urgings for him to do otherwise. In the monologue here, Hickok is basically saying that doesn't feel that he can ever live up to the stature of his own legend, and asks Charlie to accept that. Some more insight might be gleaned from Alan Sepinwall's review of this episode: uproxx.com/sepinwall/deadwood-rewind-season-1-episode-4-here-was-a-man-newbies-edition/

Does anybody know what exactly Hickok means? Is he unhappy and looking to, in a sense, kill himself? What is he "supposed" to be and what is he actually? And why doesn't he wanna fight it anymore? It's a really powerful scene that I like. I just don't understand it.

He's a legendary gunman with ice in his veins... and a petty gambler... and a lowlife murderer.... and a depressed man with PTSD. Hickok was all of those things at this point in his career. 39 is pretty much the tipping point between middle and old age for a man of his lifestyle and time period. He knew his time wasn't long, and he pretty much decided he was going to fuck around playing poker for a living until things caught up with him. He was tired of all of it.

He's supposed to be a celebrity law man looking to settle down and go straight. He was married and had gone ahead to Deadwood to find his fortune and settle down. What he found was that his celebritydom had a double edge to it, in that while some people respected him and idolized him for his mythic feats. He knew he couldn't live up to their expectations and those of whom loved him ie his close friends and his wife. What he actually is someone who is a cold blooded killer who likes to take chances. He knows one day his risk taking will eventually go against him, all of his good friends can see it and they want him to go straight and settle down. He is just an innate gambler who has failed in every endeavor except risk taking. He knows his time is coming as he gets old, he just wants to enjoy his life the way he wants to before the end comes.
