We wanted to share our experience with all of you in hopes that for those of you watching who have Deaf children, that this video will be a helpful resource to you. Having a Deaf child is not the end of the world, in fact it has made my families world more full, we have experienced another culture and a whole other world we would have never known. I've heard that babies who learn ASL as their first language are able to communicate far more completely than those who only learn typical languages. So don't be surprised to have complex conversations with your child at 1 and 2 years old. 😆

Im so glad you are learning sign!!! Only 5-7% of hearing parents learn any form of sign for their deaf kids! 5%!!! Thats absolutely awful. Thank you for being a good parent

Drives me crazy that doctors often think their patients are idiots, and 99% of them will never know how wrong they were. How many people left a physician's office with the doctor chuckling and rolling their eyes, and then that person died later that day, week, or month from lack of care... the doctor will never know what their lack of knowledge and arrogance did.

This was a WONDERFUL VIDEO! My mother had 8 children, in the mid 50's- late 60's. Four were born totally deaf. The other four became severely hearing impaired over time. My grandmother AND her two sisters were deaf. My son was born hearing, but by age 2, I knew something wasnt right. He needed hearing aids. By the time his HA's came in, they were not strong enough. His hearing loss was progressive, like mine. Know this, back in the 60's the schools the deafies went to, tried to FORCE spoken language. What an abomination! Very little sign was ever used, in fact, it was discouraged! At home, we sort of had our own sign language. It was in ASL format. " I go store", along with body language , showing if it was a question, or a fact that had happened. My son has no hearing now, but like Zack, never let it stop him. He is a successful boss where he works, in engineering and design of turbine airplane engines! This is WAYYYY TOO LONG. I especially wanted to say that Zack, you have an incredible Mama! She is wonderful. Your mother in law is also a sweetheart. It has been great following you on KZbin and Instagram! God bless you and keep you. Always keep Him first! 🙏🏼☝🏼🙌🏼❤

I really liked this video especially from your moms point of view. My parents just now started taking a sign language class that my friend teaches (she is an interpreter). I’m hard of hearing so I can hear if I wear my hearing aids and I can speak so my parents didn’t think they needed to learn it. I do have a few deaf friends who sign. But most of them wear cochlear implants. My fiancé is deaf and wears a cochlear implant too but not all the time anymore.

I was born with total hearing loss in my left ear due to what we assume was malnourishment. I was adopted at four months old and there is very little information in regards to my birth family. One thing that was evident was my birth mother probably tried to hide pregnancy and didn’t have good prenatal care. Hence why I was so sick as a baby and had so many health problems. I was only 3lbs when I was born as well and only 10 10 1/2lbs when I came stateside. Nothing can be done for my left ear but I do understand the idea of having to adapt to handle life. In school I always had to sit with my right ear towards what was going on so I could hear instructions properly. I have had to tell people often to not speak on my left side as I don’t hear anything. My parent’s likewise have been so loving and encouraging throughout all my learning disabilities and trying to help me excel to fullest potential. Very much believe that had I stayed in a Korea I would not have life I have today. Thankful my 20 month old daughter has been born healthy with no hearing issues. However whatever challenges she faces I want to be the type of mother that does her homework and makes sure she gets what she needs to live to her full potential without any restrictions due to not having resources she needs.

To families willing.. you all are so lucky to have family willing to learn ASL for their kids, wives, husbands, cousins, friends. My family never wanted to learn because they said I always spoke so well . I didn’t learn about the deaf culture till after I graduated high school. I was not allowed to learn ASL K-12. I am so grateful the program no longer exists. ASL should not be taken away from deaf. It strips them of their culture and they lose a big part of who they are. I was born deaf and to this day my family still doesn’t know ASL. I wish they would have learned with me once I was able to learn myself. Zach and Courtney thank you for sharing!

Yeah. Where I live cochlea implants are quite common. And total communication is common too. I helped at a school for the deaf that did total communication and strongly encouraged the kids to be wearing hearing aides. Im not deaf and so i have no way to know what is best. Except to believe decisions in life are best made in a way that works for an individual and their family.

Thank you for sharing your story! I have a micropreemie as well (26 weeker), and I had forgotten her hearing test at the audiologist until watching this. Going through the NICU journey is intense, full of crazy decisions that save the baby's life now but come with long-term side effects. And yet, like Zach, it has become an integral part of her identity. 💕

Zach, your mom is great. The fact that she learnt ASL for you was great. I am very impressed with her signing. I wish I could sign as well. Well I had 2 aneurysms at the age of 4 and a half, so I do everything with one side. But I still learnt sign language.

It seems weird to me that they couldn't just do immediate hearing testing. Obviously I've never had a deaf child, but if you have questions about puppy hearing (sorry, I'm a dog person), you can take them in for BAER testing, where they measure the brain's response to sound stimuli, and you have the answer in minutes. Seems crazy to me that the doctor didn't just hook him up and get an immediate answer! It's really frustrating how many doctors will tell you it's all in your head, and everything's fine. You live with that child, you KNOW when something is not right! Anywho. Your mom is awesome, and a great storyteller! :)
