The determination to learn a new language to make a new friend. and for him to be one to help her learn it. Then to fall in love. That's a hallmark movie if I ever heard one. Right on you guys.

This makes me think of my grandparents. Neither spoke each other's language in the beginning. But they made it work, and learned English here in Canada and that's how they communicated. When you find love, you have your own language.

@fairyliaaa why would someone become a Christian just like that? Unless something very meaningful happened to them? If you want more followers of God and Jesus, this is not the way to do it. This usually just has anger and hate thrown toward you. This is coming from another Christian. Respect people.
@jennie8054

@fairyliaaa Having tattoos being a sin is something from the old bible, im saying this as a Christan, you are wrong. Makeup, jewlery, tattoos, thats how you express yourself. Just because your a Christan doesnt mean you cant be yourself. You're not a true Christan, trying to force it on others.

That’s why I’m so in love with your guys!!! The way you communicate has so much attention and patience for each other, whereas in hearing people’s conversations we would communicate so fast that we would sometimes miss what the other person is talking about and what else we would really like to say!

I am in a relationship where I speak English and then slang Spanish. My other half speaks Urdu and Arabic and then limited English. Once the relationship went to the next level as you two did to where feelings are being expressed it became difficult. When I would talk about my feelings he would just agree. Then I noticed that his response had a pattern. So are agreement that we would only speak English. I used a translation app and really asked many questions about how much he was understanding. 25% of what we talked about was understood. So now Seseme Street lessons are a daily event. LoL. Like you two getting a resolution to communicate is so important. Today if he doesnt understand I reword the sentence. Abd then use the app if this doesnt work. Now it's like Christmas every day. To be able to communicate clearly is something that we just take for granted. Thank you for Java!!! With your episodes of how you communicate with her has so helped me with my pup Dani. He was born deaf. He is very young but it's amazing how fast he has learned commands with sign. His constant eye contact is impressive as he is constantly looking for instruction. Thank you for your love to educate and sharing your life with all of us. I cant tell you my favorite episode, the word I can sum it all up for me is inspiration. When feel defeated, or that I dont fit in I watch another of your mini movies and get the fuel to find a way to get over the wall of my issues. It's so important that we belong and excepted for our uniqueness. Thank you for being you. Sorry this was long. .

First of all I have read the Bible completely through a total of 6 times. Second of all I studied the Bible as a book of history for 4 years in college. Thirdly, to be judgemental and damning is a no no as a Christian. Fourthly, and the only issue about your words is why on earth is Ellie and Ryan allowing your text to still appear on their comments. And also it is high lighted. Although I do not recall any time in which the hosts discussed religious views. If you would like a debate about your views I'm more than willing to do this. But I will not disrespect Ellie or Ryan nor any of their faithful viewers by continue this dialog here. If you would like to continue please give me your contact information. To all others. I apologize for the unexpected discussion that has happened here.

Hi Ryan and Ellen! I totally relate to everything you’ve brought up in this video! My boyfriend of 6 years is an immigrant from El Salvador and I am a second language learner of Spanish (began learning at age 18). We met at 20 and at the point I was barely intermediate in my Spanish speaking skills and he didn’t know and still doesn’t know much English. Communication at the beginning of our relationship was definitely a challenge, in all the ways you both discuss. But like you said, it didn’t feel like work, because there was a real connection there! Being able to text instead of talking on the phone definitely helped us in getting to know each other because we were able to take communication at a more even pace. But our language barrier definitely led us to taking things more slow in terms of getting to a deeper level, and I love that! Like you both mention, having a language barrier really encouraged me and my boyfriend to become friends first and be intentional in pursuing one another and I feel like that has been the key to us being together so long!!! Love your videos, as they parallel my life experience with my bf so much 🥰

I came across your channel accidentally. I was not looking for this content whatsoever. I am “older”, late 50’s and I look at a lot of relationship videos and I got hooked on watching you two because the way you two interact with one another is so interesting. Very respectful and kind. And how you work through your every day differences. I am witnessing a healthy relationship and wanted you to know how helpful this is for me. And to share with you a level you probably were not even aware you are exposing to people. It is so beautiful to watch. Specifically, how you wait for one another to finish talking before you say what your thinking, I can see you are so patient with each other, one does not talk over the other. Listening skills, most people do not have. For two young people to express such great respect for each other and the health of your relationship is a master skill. You have no idea how people struggle with this simple skill. Your so young and you have mastered the art of listening to your partner, validating their ideas, concerns, emotions and feelings. The fact that Ryan is deaf and You both are signing, and I am reading the closed captions is a side bar to me..... I am thoroughly enjoying watching your relationship grow and flourish. I just love all your adventures and watching how you interact with other people. Keep up the good work, may God bless you both! I think I may take that course on Skillshare and learn sign language because you two have inspired me in such a way I can not explain clearly.

*I honestly don't think I will ever stop being in awe of how beautiful sign language truly is. The emotion and artistry one uses to express their words, feelings, etc is so amazing to me. 5 people could sign the same word but they can put their own little twist on it, whether it be their expression, overall body language, mannerisms, etc and it'll feel different. Watching you 2 sign the same words, I know it's the same but it's like hearing 2 different voices if that makes sense. Everyone's hands are so unique to themselves. It's like their fingerprints. I don't know if I'm making any sense but I never really thought to put down in words how it made me feel until now. Thank you two for sharing your experiences, knowledge and overall stories. I'm very grateful to have found your channel. It's not only super informative but it reinforces that feeling of amazement I couldn't describe until now. Much love and support!* ❤

My brother is autistic and it is very easy to communicate what I want to say to him through signing. He does not often respond to verbal so I have to use sign quite often. My boyfriend noticed this and started remembering what I said as I did the sign, so as I learn more so does he. Now when I’m not able to speak at times I can use sign to tell him what I need, like if I need water or food or help giving my brother a bath. I think you guys are so strong for being able to overcome all of your problems and having the bravery to try, I really admire it and It makes me want to follow my dream to become a special Ed. aww Java :-) I think this is relatable with all types of people: hearing & deaf, couples that speak different languages, people that have issues communicating because of past trauma, etc. Y'all bring up a great point...sign forces you to look at the person you're talking to. I'm hearing and I've always struggled with looking at people I talk to (self-esteem/confidence issues). I'm learning sign now and it is definitely helping with this.

This is so beautiful. That consistent eye contact an inability to fake attention, I can see it would be frustrating at times, but it is amazing that it forces you both to be present and immediately know if the other person is ignoring or not giving their best in a conversation. It forces you to go through, instead of leaving things unresolved unless you both agree to do so.

(I’m in Europe so that’s not possible for me 🥲) Watching you guys’ videos is always so much fun, not only because you guys are so incredibly sweet but also because I get to see sign language used in a normal way. Rather than the structured “how to sign” videos online. Fun fact, we all got interested in asl after reading the manga Silent Voice. It’s a Japanese comic story about a guy who used to bully his classmate for being deaf. It was made into an animated movie and I definitely recommend you guys watching it! The art is really pretty and from what I remember the voice actor for the girl in the English dub is also deaf in real life. Much love! ❤️👋

Hi! Me and my fiance watch your videos. I have APD and we recently (finally!!) Discovered that he is hard of hearing as well. We used to fight all the time because it was difficult trying to understand each other, given our individual impairments. I use a hearing aid (well... Maybe sometimes) and he does not use any assistive devices. In the beginning of our relationship, we really had to learn to communicate more effectively. I'm a fast talker, although I too rely on ppl speaking slowly to read lips. We played around with learning ASL and now that my boo does in fact have hearing problems, we may venture an online course together. We sometimes resort to writing our thoughts down or showing visual aids to help communicate with one another. But I tell ya!! Those periods where neither of us knew why we couldn't understand the other was difficult. I'm grateful we've found ways to connect more and we're closer than ever ❤️ Thank you both for sharing your experiences. We relate!

It was really eye-opening to hear more specific struggles you had in the beginning of your relationship. Even for hearing couples, communicating your feelings and thoughts to your partner can be hard. I’m an emotional person whereas my girlfriend is not. We’ve been together for 3 years and from time-to-time have our struggles with how to communicate how we feel. People think it’s simple (and may be true for some), but it’s hard to communicate effectively when the both of you are comfortable communicating in different ways. My husband isn't deaf but he has cerebral palsy. He went through life with a lot of self-confidence issues. Meeting people was always a bit uncomfortable because he would reach his right hand out (his affected side) to shake hands. Most people are good about it and try not to react strangely. He used to put his hand in his pocket for photos to try to hide his hand. He always only wanted to hold my hand with his left hand. One day when we were dating, I pretended to be interested in a jacket, so I stopped to look at it. I did that to get on his right side. Then I turned back around and grabbed his right hand. He told me later that he was conflicted when I did that. He didn't know what to think. He still doesn't know I did that on purpose, but we've been married ten years and he doesn't put his hand in his pocket for photos anymore. 😊

As someone who uses sign language frequently because I’m hard of hearing (and it’s getting worse) , I love your videos. I was at our local swimming pool and I couldn’t hear what they were saying through the loud speakers so I had no idea why everyone was rushing out of the pool. I asked several staff members what was going on and I was using sign language. They all turned their backs to me. Luckily a woman came up to me and told me that she only New a little bit of sign language but she’d try to explain to me. She did explain to me after she spoke with the employees. I emailed a high up person and explained the situation and now they have at least one or two people who sign and will tell us what’s happening.

I love watching all of your videos, I don't get much exposure to sign language though took it for years in school and it feels like I get to work on my receptive sign here. What a safe space I have found I love it here.

I think what couples struggle the most with in the beginning of relationships is respect and willingness to understand each other and with Ryan reaching you a language yall would definitely build up a lot of respect and patience for each other. I assume he felt excited and grateful in the beginning for all the effort you put into learning (i hope that doesn't sound rude) and you would have been grateful that he was patient in teaching you and still wanting to be with you. and then I think because yall had this communication barrier, it would open up more conversations to understanding each others differences to talk about them and learn about each other, thus growing respect each other.

I absolutely love your channel! I recently discovered it and have started to learn some basic sign language since then. As to your question, I do feel like a lot of the communication challenges you faced in your relationship are not just unique to deaf or deaf + hearing couples... I felt the same way in my previous relationship where once we started to develop more serious feelings, the communication also became more difficult, whereas it was so easy and fun in the beginning. Thanks for sharing this story with us!

The captions helped a lot. I know ASL but I am still teaching myself words so the captions helped with the signs I didn't know.

New subscriber to your channel, and love it :) I grew up on the SF Bayarea, and in the late 90's, I worked at a coffee shop, called "Deaf Dog Coffee", because the owner, had a deaf pitbull, like you guys do 💕

Hey Sign Duo! I am hearing impaired and have hearing aids in both ears. I was born deaf and have been wearing hearing aids since I was only six months old! You guys have inspired me to try and learn sign language but I haven't gone to far (lol). I wish you the best of luck in the future, and I hope the new year brings love, joy and laughter into your hearts. KISS Java for me!

I learned the ASL alphabet when I was really young in Girl Scouts. As a teenager, I came across deaf people at work in a grocery store. I couldn't communicate with them well. I joined a church that has Deaf people in it, and we became friends. It forced me to learn more vocabulary. Now I'm taking ASL classes so I can talk to them better.

I'm not deaf but I had several friends who were. They were very patient with me - and gave me SO MUCH ...crap for not keeping up with them - when they deliberately used shortcuts and signs they knew I wouldn't understand. I felt lost for the first couple of years.
