This is a very decent set and an exceptional value. I have a young neighbor that is going through tech school. He and his mom do not have a lot of money. I helped him buy this set and the first thing I did was replace the wrench set with a complete set of Capri Tools combo wrenches and had him invest in a good set of screwdrivers. He is all set. His instructor complimented him on the decision to get this set and save money till he can upgrade after he gets established in a garage. Thanks Tony, a good video!

I do like that the allen keys come with the plastic holders vs the old Sears mechanic tool sets where they were simply bagged and impossible to fit back into the carrying case.

I bought this set for my brother last week. It was a gift, plus, I was tired of him not having what I needed when I went over to help with stuff. For $99, I can’t complain. It didn’t have too much fluff (reasonable amount of bits), good selection of sockets that a non pro/amateur DIYer would need, and a great compact case (it’s just going to the house. I think it’s a great starter set and is decent quality for $99. On top of that, I’m trusting Craftsman warranty. I bought it at Ace, which means he should be able to warranty there, or possibly Lowe’s. If not, Craftsman website says they have a no questions asked warranty (no proof of purchase required). I don’t really anticipate him breaking anything (he’s not going to be using anything heavy). My biggest gripe with sets like these is that I wish they wouldn’t bother with 12 point sockets (average person that buys these won’t need them), and I wish the wrenches went up to 19mm and/or 3/4. Other than that, I think it will be a great set for him (appliances, toys, furniture, minor car work, etc).
@TonyTheTechnician
@TonyTheTechnician 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. For the price it is a nice set and ya same here. Most people at home wont need 12 point and ya I also agree the wrench selection is lacking for sure. Other then that I'm sure it will make a good set for him.

@@TonyTheTechnician No doubt. Also, I gotta agree with you on Milwaukee. I keep seeing videos for people talking about how impressed they are with them, but you could pay a little more (often times, less), and get just as good/better tools. Capri and Tekton are great brands, and both are a lot cheaper than Milwaukee. Love their power tools, but I can’t bring myself to pay for their hand tools.

I agree with you on the overall quality of Craftsman tools. I remember back when I bought a 151pc USA made mechanics tool set from Sears for $99 and I still have and use most of these tools today. Some 20+ years later

I’ve been picking a few craftsman stuff up here lately, a lot are being produced now in Taiwan, India, and even in Japan on some screwdrivers that mimic vessel designs. Also some of the new V20 power tools are being assembled here in the US so that’s a big step. The V series also looks promising as they are super similar to MAC stuff. Good review you got here. Thanks

Nice video, my fist set was like that craftsman USA made. I wanted to build on it, Sears went under could not get them warranted so I stopped using them. One Mobil set I think gets over looked is the channel lock briefcase style sold at sams, I have the Kirkland equivalent. Nice set has a good range.

Cool. WD40 silicone lubricant works great on 1/4 and 3/8 ratchets. Can also be reapplied between teardown service. Great for cold climates vs. traditional grease. Love the channel BTW.

I feel the same about Craftsman and Milwaukee tools, was interested in Milwaukee's combo wrenches when they came out but are overpriced in my opinion. I do have a lot of old Craftsman tools that are over 40yrs. old from my younger years. Now Tekton for a large part work for me in chrome. Sunex and Klutch impact sockets are good for the price and Quality.

Keep the mechanic's set under the 2 drawer unit. If you put it under the suitcase, or most other units, it tends to loosen itself at the latches if shifted side to side. It doesn't seem to loosen itself from the 2 drawer unit.
@TonyTheTechnician
@TonyTheTechnician 2 жыл бұрын
Ya I realized the tool box latches don't hold as nicely as the other latches from the other versa stack units that I own. I actually ended up using a zip tie to lock the latches in place. Obviously that won't work for those that constantly remove the set but it works very well for me since the latches have pass through spots to tie it down. Great tip. Thanks for sharing

I got a heck of good deal on a DeWalt 192 pc. set. $99.99. Very similar set without all the screwdriver bits. A few more sockets, deeps have the same number as the shallow. The blow molded case is meant for store display mostly, not day to day usage. I have a few "classic" USA Craftsman and have watched the sad decline.

Hey Tony. I have some craftsman hand tools. I have some of there sockets to fill in the empty spots on my Hansen socket trays. And I have there line wrenches and there 11 piece sae and metric long pattern anti slip gunmetal chrome wrenches. And I like em. But do you think icon or Quinn from hf are better quality? I have a lot of the icon and quinn sockets mainly chrome and Ithey seem decent quality but wonder about longevity. Would love to get your input on this Tony.

Tony, I bought the 1/4 and 3/8 socket sets from Milwaukee because I was curious. I got them on sale on two different occasion. I would say that they are very good quality. Their ratchets are nice as well. I agree they are pricy. Got 1/4 @119,99$ CAD +15% taxes and 3/8 was 100$CAD new without taxes(shady sale😎). I just purchase the 3/8 impact Capri tools shallow/deep/semi-deep SAE+Metric for 315$CAD shipped to my door(to replace my skipping Gearwrench). So I think when it comes down to options in Canada we’re very limited and if you are not willing to comit a ton of $ then Craftsman is an option for a lot of people(I don’t own any). By the way what are your thoughts on the VSeries?
@TonyTheTechnician

Very nice. Ya I understand it's a littler harder and pricier to get thing in Canada but I'm glad you got some good deals when you could. The v series are nice tools but I don't think the quality difference justifies the price difference.

One of the things I like about this set is the lack of fluff(bits and Allen keys). Tool companies are taking the hint I believe that most people that buy these sets want more coverage on the socket and wrench side. I still think the Gearwrench cube (232 piece I believe) is the best. Their inclusion of ratcheting wrenches and having their bits in a secondary container is awesome. Hopefully we start seeing this trend in other sets.
