What do those dark and greyed out notes do?

they completely silence any previously sounding note, like a stacatto note

@@m1les0 That's just a whole bunch of them stacked up on one pitch. Super Mario Paint has a limitation of five instruments/voices/notes on one pitch at any position, so it's pretty common to make sure any sounds from a previous file are silenced on the very first beat of a new file, and easiest to stack them all up at the very bottom. The reason that they're not _all_ on the bottom at any given time is (my best guess, idk how Cyan actually works) just for organizing what notes they actually are, ergo the coin notes in this video.

The "INST" mute stops all notes in an instrument track. In most cases, the "NOTE" mute functions identically, except when sustain is enabled (sounds with sustain enabled have their icons highlighted green), in which case it only stops notes at the specified pitch, letting others continue to ring
