Note the key phrase: 14 players had the million and didn't go all the way. This goes to show that Deal or No Deal wasn't rigged. The million dollar case holders most likely didn't have a 2nd big enough number to fall back on and give them the confidence to go home with their case. Now that the show was closing, and they wanted to close on a positive note, they launched the million dollar mission to avoid bad feelings among viewers after the show ended its primetime run.

Next thing I know, Matty is getting interviewed on Today for the crazy episode. Looking back, I think Matty was influenced by diminishing marginal utility once the bank offers got that insanely high, so I can see why some conservative players would have taken the deal. I personally would have gone on, but even I would struggle greatly with the reduced safety zone and higher bank offers in the "had you said no deal" segment.
