I study and write about cults and mind control, and this is an excellent 15-minute summary. (I only thought you did comedy!) Just love the family member, set healthy boundaries to keep yourself safe, and don't argue directly with them about the group. Ask thought-provoking questions, drop in information about other groups and manipulation techniques while totally off topic from their group, plant little seeds of doubt... But above all, keep lines of communication open with them. If you push too hard, they will just shut you down. That's what they've been programmed to do. Tell them you love them and miss them. Give them an alternate place to find that sense of belonging... in you.

If you study this, you may be interested in watching videos by "Erika Cupcake". She has a KZbin channel and has been going to landmark for awhile, and advertises it in her videos stating it has changed her life and made her "become authentic". That forum is 3 days, each class is 15 hours long. I personally prefer EFT tapping and Rapidly Accelerated Mind Patterning.

Direct quote from Landmark: "Brainwashed? Well I Need my brain washed" subtle, huh? It is not puesdo Christian, best sound-bite I heard of Landmark is "They're churning out little buddahs over there" you don't recognize this until you take a Major World Religions class later. Wish someone had told me this before/during after a friend got me to visit/ attend beginner course. Psych of adjustment professor at UTD helpfully explained the flaw in the program's logic that his car salesman acquaintance had created to earn $$$..year or so later after this and a boot-camp style one called Millennium (formerly LifeSpring) which scams volunteer hours + "must bring new people in or the center will close!!" every time -every new class. Ugh. Only functionality is group therapy format.

JP, I have recently come across your KZbin channel. Honestly, you intrigue me, you have incredible insight, and quite frankly are one of the funniest people I've ever encountered ( although not in person) I hope I am not inflating your already exaggerated narcissistic self? ;) in any event I came across your video “Dealing with Brainwashed Family Members” it was a very difficult video for me to watch as my wife was brainwashed by a “spiritual teacher”. My wife truly had some energetic abilities, and was learning much about herself, when she met this psychic medium healing channeler… the story I could tell could be hundreds of pages, the things I encountered were astounding! I will sum up with one simple story, from which you can draw all the conclusions you would ever need to draw. The need to feel like she belonged and had value as discussed in your video was a huge element… Intoxication and infatuation was the bliss, just as you said… And yes, no rational argument could be made, just like you indicated… Yes it lasted 2-3 years, but lost the wife I loved so deeply in the process. On the day of our divorce she told me that Andrew ( Andrew was her spiritual guide, the decade older man she was having an affair with) told her that I was not good to her or for her. because I loved and adored my wife and treated her like an angel everyday, I asked her a simple question. I said, Denise can you give me one example in which I did not treat you well. she look down, I could tell she was frustrated, and looking back up she said that Andrew said it was on a subconscious level. It's pretty astounding to know that a woman would divorce a man on the day of her divorce couldn't even cite one example in which that man was not good to her, yet could buy into what her psychic spiritual leader was telling her about that man, her husband that loved her beyond words. My story is deep and troubled, to this very day it still brings me great pain, I just felt compelled to tell you this tiny portion of the story how my wife was brainwashed and turned against me. Neil PS I could tell you more if you desire, it is a lesson in human psychology…

just watched this video. This gives me great pain as my wife (the love of my life) left me for a medium / channel-er who preached the New Age crap. On the day of our divorce, my wife said to me "Andrew (the old creepy medium that was screwing her) said that you are not good to me or for me" and I responded to her "Can you tell me one way in which I was not good to you or for you?" She looked down in frustration, slowly looking up she said that "He said that it was on a sub-conscience level" So sad that one man could destroy my marriage, kill the love of my life. 4 years later I am still crushed. My wife left me for another man (he looked about 20 years older) and she could not even give me a tangible reason. So sad, I have seen brainwashing, it took away the love of my life. it was worse than death. She had that glazed look in her eyes, she became somebody I did not know, and it was cruel to have watched it all happen right in front of me... So sad...

J L, while I agree in totality modern religion is absolutely ridiculous, especially the Abrahamic religions, to outright deny the possibility of gods is ridiculous. Evolution eventually reaches its epitome. In a universe so vast, it's honestly ridiculous to think there aren't any ETs which have achieved godhead, are we not in line to become gods ourselves? That void is from being stripped of original, real solidarity. Commonly, we go through 14 years of being contained, silenced, threatened and ordered around in a school system. They intentionally separate kids who live near each other into different classes. Once friendships form, they separate those kids from each other as much as possible. With the only goal from age 4 to 18 being to jump through authority hoops then enter adulthood with no real life wisdom except to find some way to enter a series of debt prisons as a wage slave, there will be a void.

Many years ago a co-worker of mine went to an ESP meeting. She was recently divorced with three children, and her parents had passed away. From the time she was hired where I worked, I thought she was a little bit whacky for a grown woman with young children. In any case, she told me of her experience in the ESP group, and I can't seem to forget it after all these years. She explained that the group had to sit on the floor for most of the entire day. They were not allowed to eat or use the bathroom, and I am presuming this denial of biological necessities was to stress the group's bodies, in order to facilitate brainwashing techniques. At some point I believe this woman told me that they had some individual counseling or hyponosis, at which time she was encouraged to speak with her deceased mother by opening a pretend window and going through the window to see and speak with her mother. When the woman was recounting this event to me at work some days later, she became very emotional and started to cry because she was grieving all over again for her deceased mother. I'm not sure the woman ever went back to that group, but I don't think it was very helpful to her to somehow be made to have a fantasy or hallucinaton of believing she actually saw and spoke to her deceased mother. Perhaps this was a way it was felt people in the group could cope with the various issues in their lives, but I'd never be convinced that any sort of mind manipulation is a good thing for anyone.

Exactly, this is a primary tool!! Navigate subject to truamatic child hood event. 2. Put there state of mind back to that vulnerable time! 3. Pretend to sooth them all while injecting ur own agenda for them to enroll to forum and others. 4. Bring them to a euphoric state after. 5 repeat process several times so that they become accustomed to you pulling them in and out of those state of minds. And at a snap of your fingers they will act and think as you dictate. 6. Make them come back for more, convine the fragile child like state of mind to return with bigger money! 7. If they return they noW see you as there AUTHORITY figure and will always revert to fragile like state of mind at the sight of the forum. 7. It is trauma based so brainwashing only works with those with the hardest traumas. Thus the reason traumas are encouraged to be revealed. So they can use them as a TOOL!!

I know there are people that want to belong to something bigger, but that's not why I originally took the Landmark Forum. I happened to have a really amazing director who was consistently calm, level headed and focused on the ethical commitments of her position. And I asked her if she had run across any particular training, and she invited me to the introduction meeting. I think you're right that some people are so thrilled and infatuated having gotten in touch with a personal sense of purpose, grace and ease, they want to share it with others. Some people can want to "make" other people "feel" this new happy sensation. And we all know how obnoxious someone can be when they it seems like they're trying to push it down our throats. What I got out of it was clarity around my commitments, and how they're my commitments, not anyone else's... And my responsibility. I also found a way to take in information as information, as opposed to what I might have, in the past, thought it meant about me. I never felt from the before or the after I completed landmark, that I lost myself. So, yes, JP, I appreciate that you're trying to help this person and that you are up front about not knowing or have experienced Landmark. But it really isn't meant to be what you're expressing here. And you're also right that one should always accept others for who they are...and I would add, also accept them for what they aren't, regardless of the adventures they are on. Love your videos. Cheers!

I didn't take their courses to feel like I needed to belong, I took it because my boyfriend at the time had taken it and I saw his attitude change towards a more positive road. There could be some that feel as though they need to belong, because everyone is different. I haven't taken courses in the past 20 years but I am still rewarded with the positive insights I gathered, while in the course. I was able to realize that my mom was trying to help me instead of hurting me when she hit me with a belt when I was a young child. I had walked out of the front door of our house, when I was 3 years old, and she must have been worried and completely freaked out! As a 3 year old, I didn't understand why my mom started to hit me over and over with a belt. I realized in the course, that she could've be trying to make an impact on me because she LOVED me, so much and was afraid she could've lost me forever. I never thought of it that way until I took the course. These were my own thoughts. I never shared my story with anyone. I just began to realize this through 2 days of listening to people share their stories. My insights brought me closer to my mother, after taking the course. I never realized the incident when I was 3 years old, had created so much distrust with my mom. I shared this with my mom after the course and she was so happy I told her. I was literally allowing my 3 year old perception, of my mom, dictate my 30 year old life! HOLY MOLEY! Everyone will get something different when you do the work. You can share your stories if you want or you can sit there and listen to others. I chose to listen to everyone's stories and I started to realize, we are not so different from one another after all. I saw it as a focused conversation about life and our responsibility for our perception. We can chose to see things, as we wish. Nelson Mandela was locked up and the prison guards had to keep being switched out because his positivity was so enlightening, that the guards wanted to release him! LOL!! He did not allow an oppressive environment to dictate his feelings or his power, he was able to be himself, in the face of everything, without being penetrated by it. I found the courses to be very positive. Everyone will be able to guide themselves. Whatever you choose to do in your life...enjoy it!

My experience with Landmark Education was what I call a "functionally parented" experience. More wisdom shared than by my parents, with a very positive outcome. I became a public speaker, after being reserved for nearly 30 years. My son participated and became a world traveler, on his own right out of high school. He created a foreign language scholars organization at his college which earned him an all expense paid scholarship to another country to further his foreign language skills. He married a woman from that culture. I have high praise for most of Landmark Education (L.E.) events. They give participants an opportunity to learn how to be self-responsible. Some people might not appreciate that. World leaders do. And they participate in L.E. events. I believe co-participants at the events I attended are some very popular performers today. It was great to mingle with them at the social events, even though they were at a very high level of life mastery than I was. I could sense that we all have potential far beyond what some of us apply, mostly because we weren't taught how to master anything in life. The benefits I've mentioned were achieved by independent effort and studying for many months outside of L.E. Things that I was afraid to try before my L.E. experience. My L.E. experience gave me a sense of responsibility for creating a life that I love, and I have. Actually JP demonstrates the same qualities as some of the L.E. leaders ... individual reasoning that makes sense. I'm a fan of JP, and L.E. Although most L.E. leaders will guide you to consider your own responsibility in any relationship, not that the others are wrong. With that knowledge I realized how to adjust my behavior to attract or repel people with certain behaiors. And I sense anyone can do that with a bit of individual reasoning. Learn the emotional hooks, that affect you, then learn to master them. Know that others are affected by emotional hooks too. (I don't believe I used any L.E. jargon in this message. It was not necessary. I could convey my perspective using language I chose. I believe I coined the phrase "functionally parented" (C)2000 by author.)

Wow! Powerful advice. I'd also like to add that rules of arguing apply here. Meaning, you should not argue with brainwashed people - or anyone - because this only makes them more convinced in their point of view. One thing you could do is show interest in their beliefs and ask sincere questions. Make them think about their belief and in this way you should have bigger chance for them to wake up. Many just believe without questioning and thinking about the logic of their beliefs.

RRee Ceee, Yeah... Ultimately we can do very little. But the best we can do is not antagonizing them, asking them about it, discussing with them it, planting seeds of thoughts, so that could have a chance to snap out of it "by themselves" (with our help 😉). Same applies in any case when you see one is wrong on something and you want to convey to them the truth...

The biggest thing I learned after college was that debates are truly a futile exercise that only results in each side leaving even angrier and more entrenched than before. Seriously, have you ever seen a debate end with one side saying "wow you totally proved your point, I'm convinced." ? I also learned to stop getting furious about things I have absolutely no control over. Once I realized these things (and tuned media out, social and otherwise) I became alot happier.

That's exactly what we mean, the agendas have us cannibalizing already. The racial and political divide is seriously working. People really think they care about black people and politics is real. We mean it figuratively and literally, will this vaccine turn some into blood craving adrenochrome heads like them. They've been feeding us human remains testing the theory. Nothing is to be put passed them, movies are not entertainment they're programming and work. The Matrix is actually real, it too is figurative and real at the same time. Wow- when I saw the title of this video I thought "I wonder if he's talking about Landmark". Sure enough, Landmark education strikes again. My father is a lifelong devotee- started with EST way back when. He tried to pull me into it. Once took me to an introductory session, and when I refused to sign up for a $500 follow up course, I was belittled and shamed by three people right up in my face to the point I started having an anxiety attack. My father was so embarrassed he couldn't get his daughter to sign up he took me out the back door. Some years later, I don't speak to him anymore. It is devastating to see the affects of brainwashing on family members. Sometimes as much love and compassion you have for them and what brought them to that personal journey, boundaries become necessary. Thanks for all your great videos and insight, JP!

I started crying and ran out of the building and I refuse to enter the place ever again. One of the leaders is friends with my mom and keeps calling me and trying to hunt me down so he can apologize and my mom yells at me for not allowing him to apologize so he can feel better. I was on a "Religious Sect" named FOF, (Fellowship of Friends) in North CA for a long time. After I left I asked myself why did I stay so long not buying what the "teacher" was selling? The answer I found is: they introduced in a very subtle way seeds in my subconscious mind that made me believe that I/we were different. The chosen ones. More evolved. We belonged to the only group of Humans working directly with a group of Conscious Beings working with us from a Higher Level.

Back in the day, I did est. I mention this because in the mid 80s, est became "The Forum" and in the 90s, "The Forum" became Landmark. From what I can tell, only the name has changed. Yes, brainwashing is involved. You know you're committing to two weekends, but you don't find out what is involved until you get there. They tell you to bring a pillow and a sweater. The pillow, because you're in this room from early in the morning until late at night. It was supposed to be over by 10 PM every night, but that was when my group basically got a meal break. After being in that room since morning. We were told, no OTC medications, they needed your doctor to write them a note to allow you to take prescription medication. OK, I was young and not in doctor's care. And I was determined to see what all this was about, because two highly neurotic friends of mine had done the training and they were transformed into happy people. I had zero experience with cults at the time, so I didn't recognize this changed behavior. So the training. Two weekends of being told what assholes we were and being trained to swear quite creatively. Even in the early 80s when I did this, most people, especially those of the previous generation, who had grown up "properly," still blushed at the end of "Gone With the Wind." So yes, being told these words are permissible for some people was a liberating idea. You are locked in this conference room. Ours was in Edison, NJ, in an industrial park. Deserted on the weekends, except for us. In the first hour or so, (time becomes meaningless in this environment,) you were given the option to leave then, get your money back and never come back. A few people took that option. As they left, the trainer is telling the group that those people will never be enlightened and we should feel sorry for them. What we didn't know was, in the lobby, they were getting more of the hard sell. I think all but one came back in. It was actual mental manipulation over two weekends. But, it was also a sense of euphoria. It was designed to shock the participants and make them think in a different way than they had. Being a social liberal young punk, I wasn't nearly as shocked at what went on as I was amused. But I still got that sense of euphoria. Then, graduation. Where your friends who are graduates come along. Where you get to watch videos of the post-training seminars. The great outdoors one was the one that looked like the most fun. But you had to do so many seminars, (which were $60 a seminar back then,) to reach that weekend excursion one. Finally, time to leave. Where in the lobby we are all given the hard sell on the seminars. Where our friends who are graduates give us the hard sell too. So, I signed up for the first seminar, which was called, "Be Here Now." I made it about halfway through the seminar. The night we were told that our homework was to balance our checkbooks and miracles would happen in our lives was when I snapped out of it. After the seminar, I spoke to the trainer, showed her the fact my checkbook was balanced to the penny and she told me I was wrong. That it was impossible for anyone in that room to have a balanced checkbook and obviously I wasn't open to having miracles happen. So, I skipped the next week's seminar. Next day, the phone rang, where was I? (This is out of a room of hundreds of people at the Ramada.) I was given more of the hard sell. I was made to feel guilty. How could I evolve if I didn't do as they said? Then over the course of the day, more people called to convince me to go back. The next day, I changed my number to an unlisted number and never looked back. But I did discover I had a new interest. Cults and how they work. So yes, they do manage to push the right buttons for people who don't fit into the norm. They do speak to those who never grew up. They speak to those who are seeking. While I don't really regret the experience, I wouldn't do it again.

I felt my comment was going to be getting too long to be posted. The rest of my thoughts. Yes, when you get done with that training, you are a jerk. You feel transformed, no matter how false that is, and you do start throwing catch phrases at people and telling them how if they do the training, they will understand the new you. Anyone who tries to talk some sense into you is going to be an enemy of spiritual growth in your opinion. It becomes all encompassing in your life and if you continue with the seminars, that makes it worse. While it is secular and in the form of self-help, it is a cult. They love bomb. They use guilt. They convince you Werner Erhard is some sort of genius. I will say it has some good points, but the cult think where while you're not encouraged to cut off friends and family who won't do this training, you start to feel like you don't belong with those people anymore. But you are very right about this sense of infatuation. You are hearing things that tell you that you are a wonderful person, so screw anyone who doesn't believe that. There's nothing wrong with you, it's the rest of the world. This is all very powerful. But if you're lucky, you will snap out of it, such as being told the bit about your checkbook and realizing they're full of it. But others are lifers. So I hope this woman's family sees they're being led down a rosy path sooner than later. But the fact is is multiple people in the family, that is perfect for reinforcing cult think. So she might have to learn to smile and nod for a while.

We a humans, go to great lengths not to feel the Pain/Voids. Hence, the many addictions, attachments, distractions in order not to feel the discomfort. ... the search continues until we evently meet ourselves. ... all a necessary part of the evolution process, eventually we end up coming home to ourselves, the place we were running from.... ironically it, becomes the safe haven, if only we allow ourselves to sit, feel, honour that which arises and resides within, instead of running, suppressing, denying and looking outwardly. I went through 5 programs out of curiosity, I only paid for one because I ended up using the tools given to me and landmark graduates literally paid for me to continue (the tools work). They use a lot of hypnotic techniques and break people down to basically rebuild them. The tools are useful, but it's almost like the organization becomes your parent. Basically, they have you sign a contract with them, where you agree with their terms after you're already involved and they do this during a cliffhanger statement promising something, it hooks people in. They use repetitive language and use that same language in their marketing. I stopped when I got into the leadership forums, that's where the marketing really creeped me out. Most of the employees of landmark are actually volunteers or they even pay to volunteer. It does help in a lot of ways, but it's almost like you become a groupthink, and critical thought can get lost. Some people actually became incredibly cruel to others in the program. For example, this woman was late because her brother litterally just died (Yes, and she still attended because integrity is everything) She explained the situation to everyone in the room, probably 100 or more people, and people started yelling at her 'that's your story!!!' This discgusted me, so I stood up and gave her a hug and asked if she would like to talk with me outside ... as I did this, people started yelling at me to sit down ... and then they started talking about breakdowns and such (that's my story) So, a woman shows up late, her brother died, she's litterally screamed at because it's interfering with the program because she lacks integrity ... that's how bad it can get in there. It's almost like people learned nothing from the initial forum about being humble, forgiving, perceptive and 'authentic' ... they were not human. I will say that even when I was a skeptic going in, I was in fact brainwashed myself by each program I went into.

Well that's not the experience I had with the Forum. If you have integrity or just supposed to phone ahead of time and see they going to be late or if you can't make it on ahead of time to tell him you're not going to be there and why. That's all they want. Not just not show up but phone ahead and communicate. But when she did communicate and got this response from the people something's wrong. This is not integrity from the people that are there. She had integrity. But she should not have gone. Although perhaps she went so that she wouldn't be alone she needed some support and this is what she got. Thank God you had integrity and did the correct thing. Just be there for her. Being there does not mean lecturing being there means a hug or at least listening to her.. She needs to talk about it. Talking about it helps otherwise you bury your feelings and that's not good. The Forum teaches that you need to communicate with your family that we hold baggage that has negative feelings that we bury. He says you need to get them out and talk about them. This meeting sounds like they did the opposite and shut her up not good.

I've been through the entire curriculum (Forum, advanced course, and Leadership and self-expression), plus several other seminars. I see what you mean, I've seen somewhat similar situations there, and I guess it can seem a bit cruel, although that's a matter of perspective. Being all nice about things is not going to bring the dead back. The teachings work as intended. Clinging to what was and you enabling that person is not helping them. My view is you can take whatever you like from Landmark, and leave whatever you don't. Personally, it's been a life changing experience for me and there are several things I did not adopt, but overarching impact on me is definitely positive. Relationship-wise, career-wise, money-wise, you name it. I didn't do any more programs in about 6 months but plan to do some more soon(ish).

Things weren't even close to this bad then, but cults have always existed and persisted. Look at Scientology. That author actually told an interviewer that if he were really smart, he'd start a for-profit religion. And then did. Look at Jonestown. Things don't have to be awful everywhere for individuals to be vulnerable to cults. Individuals only have to believe circumstances in their lives are rougher than they'd like, and that those circumstances may get better with refreshed effort at understanding. The cult offers an opportunity to refresh the effort, albeit a false one. An illusion of being productive like hoarders who spend hours reading books on how to declutter and then go out and buy more of those instead of take their junk to the trash. Is your life less than ideal for you? (Congratulations, you're human.) Would you like to see your relationships grow to inspirational emotional levels? Would you like to see results of your efforts have a more efficient and reliable payoff? Would you like to make more money? Are you between jobs, educational opportunities or romantic partners? Well, they can't promise those things outright, but if you use their cult techniques you can only learn after paying a bunch of money, and then going through a series of courses or trainings that involve paying even more - to get to the best benefits...then you'll know better how to manipulate your relationships into becoming cult members too. And that's hot. Because that could strengthen your bond or introduce you to new potential hookups. These groups look for bright, intelligent, caring, upwardly mobile types of people who may, for whatever reason, believe at the time that they are being held back from something they want in life and that they may be able to attain it if they learn new ways of approaching their problem solving or developing those skills. Tony Robbins (not a cult, necessarily) or any self-improvement guru like Napoleon Hill (he was just an author). All they have to do is sell the idea that you can be a better you (I think Joel Osteen actually titled a book with that phrase or a similar one). That idea is somewhat true for everyone. And improving yourself might improve your relationships. That rings true... That's all it takes for awesome people to forget that it doesn't take a $1,200 3 day seminar or anything to get that idea. But cults use deception and manipulation. A bait and switch. They devotees can convince people of real, yet mysteriously secretive benefits the group has but will only share after payment processes. 9/11/01 gave us a hint of what was to come, as did Waco, the Oklahoma City Bombing, and the Columbine school shooting, the purple draped bodies of Heaven's Gate followers... But following those or putting them together was like following trails of bread crumbs eaten by birds. 2020 was a tank, a giant social missile strike. We just haven't fully exploded yet. The best thing to do is encourage critical thinking skill development in a potential cult baited loved one. One time my daughter's early teen boyfriend told her he injured his foot as part of a neighborhood watch he went out on with the grown ups because he had to chase down some bad guys who fought him or something. I asked her, "oh yeah? Wow that poor guy. Was he wearing crutches to school Monday? Have an ace bandage at least? Did his dad (who reportedly took a 13 y/o out at midnight in a bad neighborhood to help watch out for it) also take him to a hospital or to see a doctor when he broke his ankle?" Ask to check if reality meets the reports. If the reality they see matches the words they've heard. I asked her how likely was it that the guy's caring dad (who I'd met) would let a child under 18 go out for such potentially dangerous work. I asked if she thought other grown up community members in their neighborhood watch would let him do that if it could become a liability for their group or dangerous to him. After all, neighborhood watches are out to protect kids, not put them in harms' way. Right? If a person's mouth goes one way, and their feet another... They might be trying to impress a gal with a heroic story they make up. As for cults - ask devitees what improvements specifically has the cult influenced in positive ways in their lives and how much that cost them. Get them to ask themselves if it is worth it. Like a cost / benefit analysis.

Someone I knew invited me to a Landmark presentation about 5 years ago. I had no idea what they were talking about. Never went back

I participated in the Landmark Ciriculum about 15 years ago. It was not a cult, or religious. It was just an intense class. Yes, they encourage you to invite others to take their courses, but I just considered those moments like commercials, and chose to tune them out. Its easy for me, after taking their courses, to understand why others wanted to share it with others because their courses are extremely interesting, and helpful. I invited one person, who did enroll and we became closer than ever. Like I said, their courses are challenging. You can't just passively attend. They expect your full participation in the exercises, and call you out if your not. The discussions (exercises or assignments) encourage you to consider how you handle the issues that impact your life, and those around you, by sharing them with others in the group. There was nothing "fishy" about it. The exercises were thought provoking and caused a lot of introspection. Certainly not dangerous or coersive. The format crescendos and at the end of it all very empowering. I came to my own conclusions for solutions. Nobody told me how I should "be". I was encouraged only to be myself. I'm happy I took their courses. I met some very smart people too. Yes, they have regularly scheduled "commercial breaks" where they promote the results others have had and announce their schedules, but you, by no means, are obligated to bring others, nor are you incentivised to do so. Ecouraged to? Yes. But it's not manditory. Just don't invite others if you don't want to. I can understand how this one person must have felt though with the other five ganging up on her, who would like that? But she wasn't being asked to join a cult, that's for sure. I'm sure their encouragement isn't sinister. It's hard for those who haven't taken a Landmark course to understand because they cover a lot of ground in a reletivley short period. And, I found that when I would try and explain it people would often times, jump to quick conclusions and interrupt me. So I just stopped trying to explain Landmark and just apply what I've learned. Even after 15 years since taking that last class, I still use the tools I learned and it's given me a huge advantage in life. Professionally, financially and in my relationship. I was casually told about Landmark by someone who used to be total jerk to me. She was a terrible back stabber at work. Oh did she have it in for me, I later learned. I was amazed, she actually sought me me out, years later, to apologize for her past behavior towards me. And was very happy she did. She is not the same person. Nor am I now. I'm sorry to hear that this person feels the way she does. I think it says more about the other five than it does about Landmark's courses. In my opinion, there's no harm in learning something new about how I live my life. You can take concepts they teach, or leave it. It's not voodoo, it's neuroscience, philosophy, zen, psychology, general health and personal growth. Its about not beating yourself up and not punishing those close to you that don't comply to your belief system. No harm, no foul. Take it or leave it. Just know that it's not a cult, sorry to those who've never taken their courses who want to believe it is, but it isn't.

This is right on Liberty Freak. I had the same experience with Landmark. I don't attend classes there anymore and it's nota problem for them at all. The only connection with Scientology is that Werner Erhardt, the founder of EST took a few Scientology courses . He also studied Alan Watts and a bunch of Buddhism and other stuff. The Scientologists had a problem with EST becoming so big and I heard , but can't validate, that they put out a hit on Werner, which is why he left the country.

Oh my goodness we experience this with our children! When we had children we chose to send them to a Christian school, due to personal knowledge and experience with our area school system, our own deeply valued Christian morals as well as other reasons. Upon graduation from high school, we had also saved, scrimped, borrowed to send our children to college. We wanted to provide them an opportunity neither of us had, nor could afford. So we sent our kids to college and they left with conservatives Christian values yet returned, liberal, left, SJW’s. One of the colleges was a seminary, the other a Christian college. Its not just landmark....

I think this is the first serious video I've seen by Mr. Sears. This is a really good description of what happens when someone joins a new organization and becomes infatuated, especially the bit about "Let me eliminate the aspects of me that don't fit in this organization, so that I can have a deeper sense of connection and belonging and be what the organization requires me to be." I think this is very good advice: Give those that get caught up in a new organization "very little to become defiant against".

I've being involved with Landmark since I was 22. I'm 27 now. Overall, it is a great place. I learned some incredible tools that have altered my life forever, like healing many wounds from my past, and creating possibilities and projects, and meeting and becoming friends with a variety of amazing people. Having said that, it can also be ripe for "strange" people and network marketers looking for prospects etc. And you can feel like you get roped into the next course or or opportunities there. Like anything, protect yourself. I think people fall into traps and bad experiences when they are "too" open and vulnerable, to the point of losing their center. I have no regrets with my time there, I learned a lot from the good and the bad. And the good weighs the bad in ways that I can't put my gratitude into words. I've gotten so much from Landmark, and I don't owe them anything :)

Landmark is a spin off of Scientology. I went to a Landmark session one time. They would not allow you to leave. I faked food poisoning after lunch, hung out in the toilet for about 30 minutes after lunch was over (no cell phones at the time...it was a LONG 30 minutes). When I got out, there were Landmark 'guards' there. The woman insisted on following me in her car back to my home. I went to my work instead (I had my work pass with me). She hung around in the parking lot for 4 hours while I hunkered down inside. After she finally left, I went home. It was so weird in the "meeting". They told people that they were horrible and had problems that only Landmark could fix. I was pretty young at that time - about 29...and I remember it being a a lot of money at the time for me

C.S. Lewis wrote a great book about this called "That Hideous Strength". One of the points he makes is that people join these groups or political factions as they are terrified of being left out of "the inner circle" of coolness. They are desperate to be perceived as being progressive and in on what is current and whether their beliefs are right or wrong or moral or not has no bearing. They willing bully others to prove how true to "the cause" they are. He seems to be saying that finally seeing the leaders own moral bankruptcy is the only way out of this hypnosis.

Really grateful for this thoughtful answer...and the take home point which feels so right to me is not setting up an “us/them” dichotomy...making them turn from you. Instead stay connected, stay authentic, and being able to skillfully (without provoking defensiveness) ask questions about whether these beliefs are really stemming from them inside or what they’ve been taught.

He does not even realize that he is saying and repeating EXACTLY what landmark teaches him. I have a long story about his situation but now because of this he is in a hospital, getting help. I hate Landmark. Some info. : He told me, "come to my graduation" I go there feeling like he really needed me to go (had to leave my 17month old with my husband)...but I went for him and realized that it was not a graduation. 2. There's a person asking me to give all my contact info...I find this very odd. They were VERY pushy to get the info. But I kept denying them 3. There was another lady asking suggestive questions, "don't you love him now. Isn't he better now?" I said...I've always loved him... 4. Then there was a guy on stage, "you are all here thinking its a graduation...you are actually here because there's something wrong with you."

I have done a lot of research about Landmark especially the forum (formally est). I have also completed a hypnotherapy diploma and I have studied social psychology modules at university and recently how cults work. A hypnotherapist tried to persuade me to do the forum while I was grieving. This firstly is unethical and no paid "health professional" should be trying to instruct someone to do something especially a controversial organization such as this during a time when a person is vulnerable. Landmark education is a very cleaver for profit wealthy American based company. You mostly hear about them from a friend of family member. The problem with them is that they exploit you financially and emotionally in the "group" using powerful social psychology, selling techniques, special language, NLP, CBT and hypnosis. They then pressure you to get your friends and family involved as well and to "volunteer" your time in their business. Landmark graduates believe they are more evolved and they have a way of communicating that most people who have not done the course don't have. Also those who have done their courses often pressure others to do the same. There is nothing in Landmark that you can't get from a mental health professional in a safer less indulgent environment. Those who have gained positives from Landmark tend to be their very briefly. Many people make the link if Landmark knows the problems they they have the solution. This is not always the case. Also people look at the content of the forum or other courses but don't look at the process they are subjected to. It is a well staged, rehearsed production. Do not let anyone make you do anything especially when you feel vulnerable. Do not let anyone attempt to take control of your life. Do your research. Talk to a good qualified ethical therapist. My studies in the mind helped prevent me from being swallowed up into this organization. My lesson is that even one to one relationships can be emotionally poison and cultic. Do not underestimate the power emotions have especially in a group.

Psych of adjustment professor at UTD helpfully explained the flaw in the program's logic that his car salesman acquaintance had created to earn $$$..year or so later after this and a boot-camp style one called Millennium (formerly LifeSpring). Each scams volunteer hours + M3 claims "this class must bring new people in or the center will close!!" every time -every new class. Ugh. Landmark was great. It’s a course on language and the way we use it within ourselves. Like, “I never have any good luck” is a story that when you keep telling yourself that, it’s the reality you ultimately create. So change your language and be ok with being uncomfortable and you can grow and start getting out of your own way. It was great. I did it in 2006 and found it very valuable and non invasive. It’s just language. It’s like anything- if you don’t know about it, your more likely to fear it.

Growing up in a cult, I can deeply relate to this. Only a few of my family members became multi-dementional again. Thank you for such an open, and honest take on this issue, JP.

I did landmark. in retrospect it was a little brainwash (y). it had some good ideas though. I don't totally regret it bc it got me where I am now. it was really hard to back away. finally lost them when I moved to India and changed my email and number upon returning to the states.

I did LM - my view is super different than the guy who wrote in and in the portrayal by JP. And other commenters here. So different. It's not thousands of dollars as one commenter said. It's like a structure for self discovery and awareness... within the context of being responsible for one's perspective, views and experiences. There's no dogma, no brainwashing. I think it's more likely that the guy who wrote in just feels powerless and so he decides they are brainwashed, rather than just dealing with his powerlessness. He has to judge others harshly because he doesn't know how to take responsibility (or that it even IS his responsibility) for his views, reactions, etc. He's scared, so he judges others. (And I'm not an employee or even an advocate for LM.).

my friend invited me to an intro evening. The guy doing it was horrific. I am extremely honest with myself and push myself to the absolute edge of my comfort zone to overcome the issues I have. He didn't want to hear it. He compared my trauma/domestic violence experiences to his CHOICE of having an affair "i chose to have an affair, and after i chose to keep feeling guilty, so i forgave myself and moved on" (?!?!) . Every example he listed off to me were people who CHOSE to do or not do what they did. He compared my psychological issues that I have no control over (hallucinations, dissociation etc) to people who have a choice in what they do (e.g. when someone gets stressed they choose to emotional eat, or to sit down and do nothing, make themselves vomit, etc.) Don't get me wrong, i have forgiven my abusers and completely moved on in a positive way. Having said that, my life has stagnated because i have to be mindful of the issues i can't control and the danger they put on myself. at the end, he told me he genuinely cares for my situation and i should do the landmark forum (to quote) 'even if i have to beg for the money, or take out a loan'. which left me disappointed, because i spoke a lot about deep stuff to my friend who said that's what the landmark forum was like, and that i'd really enjoy it. I was completely honest with her afterwards and told her that i believe it can be useful for motivation and perspective/seeing things objectively; however i don't agree that is the best approach towards people with distressing psychological issues and it can be actually even more damaging. And she was actually very eloquent and understanding in her response! She didn't do the whole 'anyone who disagrees with me is just dishonest with themselves' thing. i completely agree that we should all take ownership of our own shit and not cower behind excuses. that's why i told my friend the truth - and that's why she could handle my opinion: because expecting everyone to be on the same page and have the same opinion/experience is its own form of denial! we have our own unique experience of the world and can collectively learn from each other and enrich our own lives by taking from it whatever we need.

Well, that's a disappointment. for sure that guy is a volunteer (paid staff are only located in major areas and don't present to the public, as far as I know). Not sure how some of them pass muster.

Brigid Greene yeah i mean im sure i would have quite enjoyed it, but he even said he went out of the actual intro evening thing and used his own free reign from his own experience of landmark (i.e. he saw someone do this to other people and decided to do it to me without having the training or anything). my friend said he shouldnt have really done it either (especially in the small print in the sign up sheet said about mental health issues and participation.) its a shame really because i was quite enjoying it until he started going into some crazy rant! oh well!! 😂

I was in the same situation. After watching this very helpful video, I decided to join the cult to experience that intense feeling of belonging first hand. Never regretted my decision ever since. You should join as well, it's really great.

Thank you for this. I did landmark. LM had every single red flag for a cult. I was lost and now I'm found.
