I cried my eyes out while watching this. Being right now in the middle of burnout. I have been working as a Junior Devops for a year since pandemic started. Its been tough being so isolated as well as feeling completely alone in the mornings due to time difference. Besides, sometimes I feel like not bringing enough value, and I am not good enough for the position, which results in sitting for a task for hours without any rest, trying to prove my capabilities.

I am pretty down with coding and Web Development. The continous learning and solving abstract problems non stop every day is hard. I am a bit disapointed with 99% of the Coding Influencers out there that keep telling to people that coding is easy!!! Because it is not!

I'm so burned out at the moment. 9 Years of web development (most of it working in isolation) and only recently an office we did manage to acquire was lost so I am at home on my own again all day. I know it's pretty much too late for me, but in all honesty I don't know if this is much of a life for anyone. I guess I am partially lucky because I have an interest in the gym so I go there 4/5 times a week to get out of the house but sometimes (today is one of them) I really feel like winding back the clock and keeping web development as a hobby which is what it started out as. Being in a position where I can't stop because I need to pay bills but can't go on because I'm just fedup of sitting in front of a computer all the time is horrible. I'm sure it's different if you work for a company in an office with other people but man, I just feel meh... tired of it. Also being at home in our one bedroom apartment I have to work in the kitchen on a small kitchen table because we've no room. So not only am I burned out I am also extremely uncomfortable in a completely non ergonomic work environment. Sorry for the rant, feel a bit better now after typing it out. Thanks again Brad for your videos, always appreciated.

I am a self taught developer Who is trying to learn and study everyday since several years ago. From my humble experience, the only thing that helps me to stay motivated everyday is the fact of not abuse of what i love. I am reading people who spend like 10-12 hours (or even more) everyday, which is insane in my opinion. You won't hold that situation unless you are ready to supress everything in your life, and i think its just not worth it because you'll end up hating everything related with coding. I know that what i am saying may sound impossible these days, but we are not robots as the whole industry thinks we are. I mean, from what i am reading, unfortunately, i have the feeling that many people have normalized the fact of working 12 hours per day, and i don't know any other job where workers see normal dedicating this amount of time.

Got burnt out for that. This project ended last week and my exams start in 4 days, I might have to take a nice break during the weekend and get ready in the last two days or something. Last 2 years were so stressful for me and it led me to a heavy depression. I lost my self-confidence and got more stress especially when I lost my short memory for short time. I couldn't concentrate on anything. But I feel better now. I still struggle with depression and stress but not as before. What I have done to feel better: I started with Dr and medication because the level of my depression was so high. Then I borrowed my girlfriend's dog and it forces me to go outside at least 3 times a day for a walk. I quit my job and concentrate on learning other new stuff that they are new and I like. such as Python, Node, Mongo, docker... I have found another job not just as a developer but consultant which is new for me. All of these activities take me so much energy but the result is good. My mistake was, even I knew that I have stress and depression I ignored them and I thought someday everything is gonna be better. But nothing got changed and suddenly I found myself up to my neck in shit. I think it is really important if you feel not good, Don't let it continue with you and do something that can be helpful before it's too late.

I hate that burnout feeling. I can feel when it’s coming. I know I should take a break and call it a day but, I just keep pushing for that extra hour or two of work. I’m coming to realize it’s certainly not worth it because, then I feel like I need extra days off to recover from the burnout feeling.

hearing those symptoms you just named and i basically check them all and then some. completely burnt out on coding and lost all passion/love for it. my job has become a painful chore that i have to force myself hard to be able to barely do, mediocrely at that. i just got back from a month long vacation but unfortunately that didn't really help. i believe also my job is partly the culprit. i def need to start exercising like you mentioned, this is one thing that i am planning on doing that i didn't start officially yet (although i am forcing myself to slowly work my way up to it) I will give coding a different language a shot, curious about rust as you said.

I've been writing code 10 to 12 hours a day, seven days a week, for 25+ years now. The secret is to be so socially dysfunctional that you actually feel a lot more comfortable doing that than dealing with reality :-) By any means necessary...
@zen-ventzi-marinov5 жыл бұрын
Hahaha, that must be so damn true. I come from a pretty social, cocky, outgoing background and I literally had to force myself to become more anti social and shy because if I didn't I was gaining WAY TOO MUCH PLEASURE from socializing.. leaving not much attention to programming. Ever since I've started gainign deeper knowledge in programming, I've been "rewarded" for being less outgoing and social. And often times """punished""" for being more outgoing, joking with people, having fun, etc because they feel uncomfortable. Of course not always but quite more often

I used to be comfortable coding alone until I land a programming career at a small and new IT company in our local area. There, we build projects together for hours and hours and it's so much fun (at least for me). But then, a year and a half later, the number of workmates (which I treat as my friends) in our company gradually decreases until I find myself also backing out from the company. I took a break for 3 months and decided to enter the freelancing community. I realized that my performance and productivity has decreased. I noticed that I don't feel good coding alone after being used to having a team work on projects. Until now, I'm in this situation. The problem is, work isn't the only thing that was affected. I haven't enrolled this school year and I overea. It's harder for me to sleep, and I always feel so anxious knowing that I'm so behind at everything and I'm not using my time wisely. I easily get irritated, I find myself breaking some of my personal stuffs sometimes. I feel so disappointed at my current state. I hope these tips will help me get out of this burnout and extreme anxiety. Thank you for posting this video, Mr. Brad!

I am 3 months into Lambda School. 11am - 8pm Monday - Friday. new topic every day, test every Friday, and build week every 4th week. Every single week so far has had days of extreme frustration and complete mental chaos, my mind is absolutely melted and dripping out my ears every night. I am still excited about learning this stuff and passionate but I am really hoping the 24/7 vertical learning curve calms down a little bit when I actually start working in the industry. Thankfully I live on the east coast so classes start at 11am rather than 8am for me. And I wake up at 6am so I can wake up slowly, exercise, shower, breakfast, run errands then get on and be ready for class. If I had to learn this stuff first thing in the morning I would have quit already I think.

I have been developing a full project with backend in node.js/mongodb and frontend multiplatform for android and .net framework for the past year, this project is my own, for my own company and so I have no options for breaks.. but I did 1 year straight of 15 to 18 hours a day 7 days a week and I live alone in my apartment with no family.. got the burnout mid November and so, I started to hate my computer and compilation times.. so I decided too sell everything in my desk... I was a windows user/developer for most of my life and knew linux enough to be able to run a server and put up a node.js server but that was all about it... then I came across the idea of converting to full linux and got some system76 shit which I'm currently waiting for and I'm eager to setup my new environment to start developing again.. been 3 weeks out and I think I'm ready for another long run. Btw in this time doing the catch up with linux that I should have done in the past 10 years.. and its been great.. I love linux and I don't want to know a thing about windows anymore lol
