In my opinion, he was the last President to actually avoid this nonsense tribalist politics that became increasingly strong under Bush and full throttle under Obama and beyond.

Much as Nixon was a capable man, he was guilty of other crimes, not the least of which was his treachery in 1968 when he secretly went behind President Johnson's back to negotiate with the Vietnamese communists, claiming he would offer them a better deal than Johnson, all the time pretending to support Johnson's peace efforts. This was intended to thwart any chance of peace in 1968, thereby derailing the Democrat's re-election campaign. This was deeply cynical as well as treachery. You should also consider what sort of man who was immensely popular and likely to win in 1972, was so paranoid that he authorised the break-in at the DNC. Nixon achieved much, but he had worrying personality flaws. He resented many people and tellingly had no intimate friends.

What Nixon said here is what Reagan did to the Soviets. No more Soviet Unión, Berlin Wall, or a Cold War without firing a shot after 70 years. Firm and direct was Ronaldus Magnus. He learned foreign policy from the Master, Tricky Dicky. I use that nickname with affection. He was truly a genius.

Yeah, heads up current and all future presidents, President Nixon was a master of detente. Study his demeanor during negotiations. Articulate, strong, never combative or demeaning. He knew more about his "adversaries" then they knew of themselves. Nixon should be the definition of "Statesman" when looking for an example.

He opened the doors to China buddy. Plus he sabotaged the Vietnam peace talks extending the war by two years while also committing the most infamous crime aka Watergate. Nixon had great policy ideas but he was also hyper paranoid and had really low self esteem. Listen to the Nixon tapes to gain a full understanding of the man. He recorded all his own thoughts which really tells you what the man was all about. It isn't a pretty picture.

Best way when dealing with anyone is to firm, polite, and very straight forward with what you want. No soft language. No trying to butter them off. People can see through that right away and as soon as they do you might as well go home because nothing will be done.
