Thats's one of the reasons why I'm looking into development. I think I have good communication skills, however I'm a huge introvert and in my current line of wk, it's so exhausting the amount of catering I have to do for college students (advisor). I like the idea of having my earplugs in, coding all day and only talking to a few select group.

I'm in a similar boat, I have pretty good professional communication skills. I used to work in Customer Service and was on the phone with people all the time. But I'm an introvert too, and don't particularly like dealing with people. I think our communication skills will be an advantage in this industry.

Get a job that requires you to make small talk in order to succeed. Get a job at a grocery store for example. You'll have to talk to lots people everyday and if you come off as awkward once or twice it's not a big deal because by the time you've thought of it they are already out the door going on with their day. Being a cashier, a bagger, a door greeter, or anything of the sort you'll get lots of "practice" everyday.

I’m an introvert, I worked as a doorman (bouncer) for years this definitely helped me come out of my shell. The other thing you could do is join an amateur dramatic society (acting club)

This is what I feel my strong suit is. Ideally I'd like to meet with my own clients and work with a team of developers on building Software as a Service. I've always been a true Nerd, but highly Social as a stereotypical Student/Athlete.

Model their mannerisms and speaking patterns. I've recruited a lot of nerds and it works. After a bit of time, they will start to mirror your patterns.

Really appreciate your insight on these under-addressed issues. Would be interesting to hear your thoughts more on people skills etc. I think most freelancers could become very wealthy if they just knew some basic social / sales skills.

You are talking about Nerds like it's National Geographic channel. "See people, this is Nerd habitat. They drink here, they eat here... and here is where they code" :) From my experience, those who are not "nerds" are usually not good programmers. You must love what you do in order to succeed and "nerds" love what they do, passionately. "Nerds" love programming and they innovate it, "regular" people do it just for the pay check and that's it.

Hi Stefan, I need some serious advice, for the past couple of months I have been interviewing with different companies and doing a bunch of coding tests as part of the hiring process, almost everytime I have been able to complete the task and create a working application, but it has never been enough for me to make the final cut, I have never been able to impress. I do not consider myself a great coder, though I am not a bad coder either, I feel like I at least deserve to be working as an entry-level dev. I am very frustrated, and I even think about giving up on coding and pursuing something else, maybe professional coding is just not my cup of tea, but being a web developer or a software developer is my dream, I am passionate about it, I spend most of the time learning, thinking or watching something related to programming. what I really need to know is how can I become a better developer? how to stop being average at coding? how to write structured, secure, and readable code that can impress an employer, basically how to write quality code, because I feel like now I am only able to write code that works, code that is average but not great, and that is not helping me get my dream job.

I think 9 times out of 10 this problem is brought up by people who need to rationalize their inferiority to people who have better skills and feel superior to them in being "non-nerds'.

How would you recommend getting in a position to be that bridge between the two worlds? I enjoy working with people and I want to find a path that will lead be l me into that intermediary role in a business.
