Agreed. And you can also speak frankly to a male teacher about this issue: he's an adult, he probably has a mum/sister/cousin/friend/girlfriend/etc, so he knows that girls get period. Most important: it's NOT a scandalous thing, it's common thing :) I played volleyball, we do need to wear a uniform with very short and tight pants only during matches. I've ALWAYS had male coaches and they were so so sweet and understanding with us girls!

You are so right, I felt so ashamed when I got my period for the first time, but there is no reason for that. It's just part of life. I have never done ballet (but absolutely love your channel!) but about a year ago I started using a menstrual cup (I use the Diva Cup brand) and it has absolutely changed they way I feel about my period. I go to the gym every day and the cup made it so much better! No leaks, no smell, much more comfortable. I wonder if any dancers have had a similar experience.

AssaultedPeanutt hello! try natural medicine! there are many things that are very helpful, first change to a menstrual cup to avoid all the chemicals such as chlorine bleach and glyphosate that are in tampons, drink lots of filtered not bottled water during your period, avoid salt ands irritants, and take maca root superfood in powder form in smoothies or something similar this super food will help you regulate your hormones and deal with many of the symptoms, is an adaptogen meaning it will work worth your own body. I wish you the best! and never give up, the solutions are there they are just not the Big Pharma agenda ones.
@lilmissmonsterrr8 жыл бұрын
Aletia Gonzalez thanks for taking the time to type that advice, I'll definitely try what you mentioned. I have been highly considering the menstrual cup because i've been suspecting that my body is more sensitive/symptomatic to chemicals than the average person and because it's less wasteful than tampons and such. so I'll try that if you think it'll help my pain situation. I'm a lot more holistic than I was when that surgery took place, so I do feel that my body must be lacking something that needs to be supplemented. I only drink filtered or bottled water, and I'm sort of a pescatarian, minus some fish types, and this diet works best with my body. but anyways, thanks for the advice!

NEVER EVER WEAR TAMPONS WHEN YOU'RE NOT MENSTRUATING! Feel that dry feeling taking a tampon out that isn't fully saturated? The reason it is uncomfortable is because it is ripping micro cuts into your vaginal canal, which is the way that the staf bacteria gets into the blood stream causing TSS which can be fatal. Use a menstrual cup if you need internal protection when you're not menstruating just yet.

There are thin panty liners that are invisible under leggings, leotards, tights, etc. That way if you start your period, you won't leak for a while. Much safer than tampons when you are not on your period (taking out dry tampons can cause micro tears in the vaginal wall, which can cause infection)

Somebody on here suggested you need to wear a tampon to class starting around the time you think you MIGHT get your period...
@KaseyDarlene8 жыл бұрын
I am a ballet teacher and after reading the comments I want to offer some wisdom. First, tampons are NOT scary. I promise. For a dancer, they're a lifesaver especially if you're really serious about dancing. If you want to dance, please learn to use them. Also, as a dancer you need to start wearing them to class at least a few days before you are supposed to start. Find a brand that doesn't leak for you and you shouldn't ever have to wear anything in addition to it unless it would make you feel better. Next, understand that periods are completely normal. I have had students start theirs during class before and I have had students noticeably wear a pad with their leotard. If an accident happens you're not the first nor the last and it's nothing to be embarrassed about. Main thing is, don't be afraid! It's not a big deal and it's not scary no matter what happens!
@TieDyedSquishy8 жыл бұрын
Kasey Darlene using tampons when you're not on your period is a bad idea. It increases the instances of small scratches you get on your vaginal walls from tampons that leave you open to TSS. Please don't recommend that girls wear tampons incorrectly. A little research on tampons and TSS will clear that up. Cups can be used quite safely while not on your period as long as you use lubricant. Cups don't scratch the vaginal walls like tampons do so they have a much much lower risk of TSS.
@KaseyDarlene8 жыл бұрын
Ok, thank you for the information. I will definitely look into it. For someone who is in a leotard and tights six days per week pads are just not an option.
@Sayyoullbethere967 жыл бұрын

Damn you know that this is super unhealthy and also dangerous to wear a Tampon when you're not in your period. It promotes all sorts of infections. You can wear a menstruation cup while you are on your period otherwise just don't use anything in your normal cylce. Do you think it's helpful if a couple of your girls are fighting a serious infection, draggin themselves to class and still perform flawless? But you have to be careful when you are upside down. The blood should not flow back in the uterus and therefore tempos a bit safer.
@sonjahavukainen18597 жыл бұрын
Lara Korrat That's not true, at least the tampons being safer -part. With the tampon, the possible bacteria or whatever you think is dangerous in the blood is all the time touching your vagina (and menstrual blood isn't dangerous - it might grow some bacteria over time but it takes more than 12 hours if the blood sits in the cup). With cup, it isn't and even if you are upside down and the blood would get out of the cup to the top part of your vagina, it would just go back to the cup once you turn back. It doesn't go back to the uterus.

Never, make sure that the sticky surface has the same with of the fabric of your underwear. If you are a (small) teenage choose those brand that target young adults as the pads are smaller in width but never the less still absorb enough so they will fit you better, so they will not show as the sticky pads is sticking to your legs. You can also choose those pads with wings on the side so they will stay in place better. I hope this helps. Plus, if you have breaks in between classes you do not need a massive pad in length, those are if you are laying down. Just use one that will be enough for the time being that you cannot go to the toilet.

Definitely don't wear a tampon when you're not near you're period because taking out a dry tampon is what causes toxic shock syndrome. However I recommend checking out menstrual cups because there's no risk with those!

Kathryn I am a retired gymnast so I can relate to this issue so much. You have done a wonderful service to the young ladies out there who are still learning to deal with their periods.

You can also put on your tampon as usual and then use the little pads that I think they are like everyday pads or something. Sorry if I'm not explaining well 😅 but this is a really good advice if you feel like you are going to have an accident 👌🏽. Thanks for the video! It was really helpful! 💕 😘

Try swimming with your period.. but to be honest every girl athlete struggles with periods
@shruppledoo56296 жыл бұрын
Caroline Kennedy oml ikr, I’m a swimmer and swimming is probably hardest with a period because you have to wear a tampon, there isn’t another option. I hate tampons and I can hardly do breast stroke with one and ugh. It’s even worse if you leak because at least in dry sports it just stays in your clothes and isn’t too obvious but in swimming if you leak it stains the pool and EVERYONE SEES and ughhhhh

@@shruppledoo5629 tampons aren't the only option. There are menstrual cups and sponges and so many others. If you want to know more about all the options I recommend looking up alternatives for tampons.

Dancing in a pad is literally impossible it’s either a liner or a tampon. And liners really aren’t the best protection.

Peace of mind is priceless! I love it :) I wore my first tampon at age 19 when a period suddenly came on during a summer intensive. It was awkward but a younger dancer gave me one and it was so weird, haha. After a few cycles I couldn't believe I had gone for years without trying them. Definitely more comfortable dancing then with a pad.

One thing I would like to point out, as a medical student, is that wearing a tampon outside the period may be harmful, because the tampon dries all the fluid that is inside your lady parts, so that may damage the bacterial flora that we naturally have. As these bacteria are benign, keeping them out leaves more space for harmful bacteria to grow and cause an infection. A safer alternative to keep peace of mind would be to wear pads during non-period days. If it's not possible to wear pads, try menstrual cups

The reason girls and women forget that every woman deals with periods is because we still hear them called "controversial". It's great that you made this video, but you started out basically confirming that we should feel uncomfortable talking about it.

This is a great video, and I love most of the tips. However, I DO NOT agree with using a tampon when you aren't on your period. If you are concerned, you can use a menstrual cup, even if you're not on your period. That's because menstrual cups are not absorbent. However, using a tampon in that way can be dangerous and painful. (I generally think that menstrual cups are better than tampons. A lot of women say that cups are easier to use, once you get past the learning curve.)

I really wish they would have been social media the internet but when I was in dancing because I thought I was the only person who was wondering how to deal with these things. I was very shy and my mom didn't give me that much guidance in the first place. I mean she never had anything active to worry about I finally figured things out when I was in college myself but it even made me feel better as an adult to hear videos like this to know "okay there are other people who felt the same way I do" so thanks for sharing this kind of information.

i would also totally recommend a menstrual cup - it's peace of mind for a bit longer than a tampon would give and you can't feel a thing if it's in correctly. this SAVED me in college during long rehearsals or anything where we didn't have a lot of breaks. they're not for everyone, but definitely worth a shot!
@ErdbeereRot11 ай бұрын
Why no breaks? It is sick without breaks. You have to change tampons and cups or pads often, otherwise you can get severly sick from it.

Hi, I started using a menstrual cup at age 13 and it was and is the best thing ever!! It takes a while to get used to, but it never hurt, not even the first time. A little KY lube round the rim is helpful. I can not fell it inside, and I can wear it safely when I do not have my period. Fantastic!

2 story’s 1st I started ballet when I was 12 I already had my period during class I just dealt with it but my first dress rehearsal I bled all over my white gold costume luckily no one noticed and I got it dry cleaned before the show and it was fine. 2 it was the next year and I got my period during a dance Christmas party we all went into the studio and took turns showing our the different dances during the dance I bleed all over my white tights and red body suit everyone saw the whole studio about 50 dancers from about ages 4 to 17/18 I swear I almost died I didn’t have anything at the studio so I called my mom and she came and picked me up about an hour early. Now I laugh about it but at the time I was soooooo embarrassed

Ok little story for you now, when I was 13 every year we did little ballet shows to show the parents and stuff, I had a solo as the sugar plum fairy for the nutcracker show we where doing. Anyways during the solo I wore a pink (almost white) tutu, and I just got my period. I bled all over the tutu. But the show must go on and I carried on! 😂😂😬

hey great vid, it so encouraging to hear you speak about this as most people won't talk about periods no matter what activity/art/sport you are doing. Thou i must admit sometimes they can be really painful and make moving really difficult but in those cases particularly if its always like that its best to visit your doctor at least this is what my mother taught. Also a good idea is to keep track how they make you feel so you can better equip yourself (mentally and emotionally) and if any is wrong, you can use your track record to help figure it out.
@LisaMichele8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this wonderful video...which will no doubt be helpful for your younger viewers. As we get older I think the embarrassment tends to fade and we learn to just deal with it, but at 14-15-16-17 it can be a little cringey! A couple things- I definitely would urge people to not be shy even in talking to male teachers about this (as needed). Though there may be exceptions, they should be compassionate/professional as they are working with mostly women all the time. :) Also-I think wearing a small tampon if you're expecting your period/just finished it and have a big performance/can't take a bathroom break is not a bad idea, but if you're in the middle of your cycle I think it would not be optimal for health reasons. A good thing to do is to track your cycle and if you're regular, you'll know pretty well when to expect it! :)

you should actually NEVER wear a tampon if you are not on your period my mom is a nurse as well as a OBGYN and i asked her mom while i dance sense I have a very heavy flow of discharge if i could wear a tampon and she said it is very bad for you to do that. you can get high wasted underwear and wear it with a pad if you are that nervous about getting your period.

How do you put a tampon in when you don't have your period? Doesn't it hurt especially to take it out? Xx
@tinamarie21218 жыл бұрын
Leah Rose if you are super regular, and want to be prepared and use a tampon, it helps to use a little Vaseline or KY lubricant on the applicator to ease insertion. if you don't feel comfortable using a tampon "dry" ,as in before your period starts, check out a menstrual cup. Also, I would also suggest keeping backup undies, tights, and leos just in case, along with a stain stick. When I was in middle school, I would stash an extra pair of undies in a zip lock baggie in my purse (that little zipper pocket or keep them in the pouch with your monthly supplies), because I couldn't always count on being regular for about the first year.

Leah Rose ih highly recommend to learn use a menstrual cup they are amazing you can make it wet with hot water and it can go in .
@TieDyedSquishy8 жыл бұрын
Leah Rose using tampons dry causes small scratches on your vaginal walls and is a direct contributor to TSS. Please don't do it. Cups can be used quite safely while you're not on your flow if you use lubricant (KY).
@rimun52357 жыл бұрын
While I'm interested in trying the cup, I do want to chip in with objectivity TSS is so rare and half the cases of TSS have nothing to do with tampons. I mean really. TSS is a bacterial infection, while tampons can cause it if left too long, it's more about the bacteria. There are plenty of ways to get TSS without ever having won a tampon in your life. Just about anything you put in your vagina can cause TSS. Menstrual cups too...

Nicole G drink lots of water it really helps, also got baths with Epsom salt, the heat and magnesium help relax your uterus mussels and have less cramps. if you have nausea like me I found out that peppermint essential oil really helps dissipate it. put some drops in water and drink it and put some oil on your wrists, before your ears a little under your nose, the fresh feeling eliminates nausea immediately. when I had very bad cramps only Aleeve helped no other pain killer.

Menstrual cup + menstrual panties!!! The unbeatable combo!! There is no way you will have a leak with them and it doesn’t show under your costumes. Now, one very important thing: having your periods is the most normal thing in the world and we really need to stop worrying about people finding out. It’s ok if they find out. Of course we don’t want it to leak, but I used to hide my padding when I was going to the bathroom and be really concerned about someone finding them in my bag. It’s really not worth it! Everybody knows women have periods and there is nothing wrong or gross about it. Quite the opposite, it means we are healthy.
