This happens too much with kids whose parents value money and career paths over their children's interests. They taught him that showing off and money is what matters most.

If you put your expectations onto children ("be a doctor or lawyer and have lots of money") you're setting some of them up to fail if they are not interested and/or don't have the aptitude to do it. Teaching them that appearances and money are aspirations without wanting to do it is also setting them up to be liars.

Yeah and he was taught to be that by his parents who were cold blooded about planning his life for him. They should have just told him to go study whatever he wanted at uni and pay for the college dorm, and make him use HECS for the fees. When you expect your kids to have high paying lucrative jobs (they don't want) so you can use them to show off this is what happens way too often. My kids both decided to be doctors on their own after living at uni and studying a variety of things as electives during their undergraduate degrees.

He would have been told no a lot when it came to things he wanted to do, but anything involving what his parents planned for his life without his consent would have been fine. Imagine having children and expecting them to grow up and be a doctor or lawyer. I have a Chinese neighbour like that who told me her son with be her ATM when he grows up and is a doctor (and that this is what is believed in China). The kid was standing right there when she said it.
