My dad taped The Love Bug off the tv for me when I was very young and I nearly wore the tape out. It was such a good film, and series, and didn't patronise the viewers, many of whom were young. The original film dealt with love, friendship, jealousy, envy, greed, suicide, depression, forgiveness, determination, success, failure. Sorry to get a little heavy and biblical, but it was a pretty unique concept.

That's great that your parents taped it for you. My mom taped a couple episodes of the 1982 Herbie Mini-Series for me. I didn't know there were movies until I went to college at the Turn of the Millenium.

"The Love Bug" was a massive hit for Disney with families and overseas audiences, as they were in 1969 (primarily Pacific Rim and Europe). The car being a hero worked very well, visually. The movie was set in San Francisco, which was a "happening place." Herbie was a Volkswagen Beetle, which was a popular car among younger people because of its low cost and excellent gas mileage.

Yeah, when I was a kid in the early 1970s I watched that movie at the local movie theater in our small town. I loved it. And I thought Dean was just as much cool as Herbie was in that. I also liked Dean in a little known movie called Two On A Guillotine. It had Connie Stevens in it and I think Cesar Romero was in it too. I saw that one for the first time in junior high school. For some reason they showed it in the school auditorium one day. It must have been on 16mm film using one of those reel to reel movie projectors. Oh God, I'm old.

That's another one that I liked when I saw it for sure. I haven't seen it in decades. I can't remember it as vividly as I can The Love Bug. I remember Haley Mills was in it, and also an actress who played her older sister maybe? I don't remember who that actress was though. Seems like it was the actress who played Amanda Bellows in I Dream Of Jeannie. Allow that I'm wrong about that. I'm going to have egg on my face probably.

Fascinating interview ! A shame there was no follow up interview so Dick could ask Dean why he left the Broadway run of Stephen Sondheim's "Company" after only one month. The official reason put out by the producers at the time was that Jones was fighting "hepatitis" but years later in interviews Jones admitted that he couldn't go on with a show he considered too "nihilistic".
@ronmackinnon9374

Jones was going through marital problems at the time (which were not made any easier by the subject matter of the musical), and he didn't want to be booked for a long engagement in New York. The show's producers understood and once he'd help get it off the ground through the initial month of its run with his star power, they were ready to replace him with his understudy (a change which was made within about a week of the time this episode aired).

I read online that while appearing in "Company" Mr Jones was undergoing marital troubles. The marriage ended in divorce. Plus years later he said he found "Company" to be too "nihilistic" for his tastes. But he went on to have a very happy second marriage and as is well known, he became a very devout Christian.

Description of the clip is off a little. Rather than discuss the filming of 'The Love Bug,' he talked about how subsequent productions he was on would try to take advantage of the popularity of 'The Love Bug' for publicity during filming. (Also off in its reference to a motorcycle 'accent'. 😁)
