This is awesome! I miss Dean. And regardless of Jerry's perceived arrogance etc.. He also did many wonderful things and had a good side. He was a flawed human being but I really believe he was a comedic genius and super intelligent too. Lets remember he helped develop the "video assist" while directing the Bellboy. Dean was a genius in his own right as well!

at the public auction of JL’s estate many items mentioned in this video were auctioned off: the plaques from MDA, the top box office certificates from theater owners, Martin & Lewis contracts for Colgate Comedy Hour, rehearsal photos and their radio show scripts. He kept all of it to the end.....

Dean and Jerry were a perfect pair at first then when they each went on their own they were just as successful as solo acts as they were as a team.

I love watching Jerry crack Dean up with the Mr Pearson line! Earlier I was wondering whether Dean was wishing Jerry would shut up! Jerry just keeps putting out the gags and sooner or later one hits big! Maybe even he didn't know when. Jerry is right when he says the connection between the two of them was critical to their success, we laugh more when he cracks Dean up and when Dean seems to respond by formula it falls a bit! Jerry was/is a great bunch of guys!

Another great posting. These guys had just got over a feud presumably the blow up at the time of the Circus movie. But the relationship still seems intact here. Sad to think this was not to last much longer. I have heard Jerry talk about Damon and Pythias numerous times and how Dean's rejection of the Delinquent movie based on it was one of the events in the teams demise. Shame the end was bitter but they went out on top before Jerry's was too old to get his kid character to work..

Here they had overcome the first feud, that lasted only a week, after filming Living It Up. Jerry is immensely sweet when he addresses Dean and especially when he talks about their friendship. Dean looks quite cold, his smiles look pretty tight. Dean's poison towards Jerry had already begun in the film The Caddy. He didn't want Jerry to sing "The Gay Continental". I mean, he didn't want Jerry to sing.

@soapbxprod Yes, Lewis worked in a kind of crouch with Martin. His book about their partnership, "Dean and Me," is one of the most fascinating reads I've ever encountered and I've read it several times since it was published. Lewis apparently misremembers details over time, though. I recently saw an interview about how they met and it was totally different from the book.
@TolKOZAK
@TolKOZAK 3 жыл бұрын
Misremembers is an interesting term. Jerry likes to put on airs of superiority and in terms of IQ and education I'm sure he outshone Dean, but my sense is that deep down he knew Dean was a greater talent than he could ever dream to be. Still, kudos to Jerry for writing a book with beautiful fond memories of Dean. Both were flawed human beings but Dean was something special and most people overlooked his shortcomings and marveled at his superb talent.
@englishteacher.8635
@englishteacher.8635 2 жыл бұрын
@@TolKOZAK I wish people would stop pitting them against each other. Dean was no greater talent, but he had the suaveness and don't care attitude that Jerry admired and wished to be like. Dean just wasn't as inspirational as Jerry, but together they both complimented each other. Jerry wanted to improve intellectually and Dean wasn't bothered, so that was that. Ten years was enough for them to work together so intensely, so they had to move on. We are all flawed human beings, but those with special talents tend to have greater highs and lows as their lives are more extreme.

To me, Jerry has become three different people. Before 1960, up into the 80s, then the rest of his life. He seems to be a man of three different personalities. I think the ego grew in the 60s. The heart attack in 1960 obviously changed him, the genius emerged in his comedic films of the 60s. He became an egomaniac into the 70s and 80s, and this I think really hurt his relationship with his audience. The end of his life Jerry was pretty much unapproachable. He was nasty. But I attribute it to his major health issues and constant pain.

Looking back on it we can be glad he did lose each other. They each went their own way and made a name for themselves. In the end on Sept 4,1976 they came back together just for a few minutes on Jerry telethon. Those few minutes was enough to make television history. Thank to KZbin we can relive all the history of Dean and Jerry rather as a team or by themselves. So glad they both live on in our memories.

Toni Wilson good that they did at that point. It would have been a sad life without" the nutty professor", " cinderfella", " the errand boy", "the Patsy" etc...... And Martin was an amazing singer, definitely my favorite!

I'm not sure where they were in their relationship but Jerry mentions the "feud'. Jerry, as usual is manic and pseudointellectual. Dean is super cool and trying his best to "go along to get along". Gotta love Deano. Jerry was needy and deserves our sympathy. Can you tell whose side I'm on?

Love this!! Could someone explain the "his wife can't swim" joke that Jerry makes at 5:38?
@jamlaw
@jamlaw Ай бұрын
My thought was perhaps he was making a joke because they were in the pool house? So, therefore, Dean didn't have a pool house to display awards, because his wife couldn't swim. So, no need for a pool. Kind of like "his wife calls the shots" type of thing? But, there could be another reason I missed, or maybe it's an in joke!

ThanKs for posting. Hard to watch, mainly because young Jerry is just so ...well, obnoxous. I, too, have a love/hate thing with Jerry. You can't take your eyes off him, like a train wreck, he's mesmerizing. My theory is that he achieved too much fame & fortune too early (19) & never got a chance to finish developing as a grown up, so watching him here @ 28 is like watching a spoiled 9 year old who hasn't learned when to quit with the shtick. Watching his awkward shifts from manic to adult..oy!

You are absolutely right! He is mesmerizing! Although, I never felt that hate/love..I only loved him because he was one of a kind, different from anybody else and that's what made me love him! His unique, crazy, complicated, very intelligent, and talented persona!

I beg your pardon, 'soap'- I thought you meant, "after their split in 57 or 58". What you meant was, they appeared separately AFTER their split, in '57 or '58. Producing that A&E hour [which was VERY well put together, incidentally], natually you'd know their "backstory", and when their partnership ended. My apologies...

@soapbxprod Lewis also did a DVD interview about Laurel and Hardy in which everything was utterly wrong! He had Hardy working as a stagehand until Laurel picked him out and gave him a break!! Reminds me of John Ford saying that he discovered John Wayne as a prop boy and renamed him for "Stagecoach" when it was really Raoul Walsh who did that a decade earlier for his electrifying masterpiece "The Big Trail." Ford always wanted Walsh's wild background, though, down to the eyepatch.
