Absolutely right - Jerry Lewis is, was, and always will be, a legend and a defining comedic genius. You see his influence in so many of today's comedians. And Dean Martin, in his own incredibly unique way, a genuinely funny and great singer, was also influential in his world. They were incredible together. There will never be a team like this again - it wasn't just the talent, it was the chemistry they had and the perfect timing and the delight they took in each others' talents.

I have watched this footage a lot and love it more every time. No need to argue a 50 year hypothetical argument who was greater. Dean Martin was great. Jerry Lewis was and still is great. Martin and Lewis were incredible. It's so lucky we have a visual document of this type. I have seen some incredible recently discovered photos from Life mag files of a Copacabana performance from 1948 or so that are well worth finding. Search Martin and Lewis time life photos to get there.

I was a kid in those days. I worshipped the two them. I was brokenhearted when they broke up. The fact that Jerry is alive allows me to retain a bit of my youth. They enteratined a nation together and solo. Nothing like them now.

I was born too late. Great days back then. People dressed to go out, drank, smoked and had a great time watching great talent. Luke, thanks for this -- I have a really crappy copy of this show, but this is wonderful. Interesting to see how animated Dean is before his Rat Pack days when he was so laid back. Fans should read Jerry's book "Dean and Me"--wonderful. Never knew that Dean's first name was Paul and offstage Jerry only called him Paul.

When I was a kid in Atlantic City in the Sixties, these guys' 500 Club shows were still legendary although they'd broken up two decades earlier. Now I know, in clubs they were the best.

A pity you don't see guys with this talent set anymore. When they broke up, they each gained something and lost something too. A shame they couldn't have had an occaisional reunion of substance while mostly being solo. Like the Beatles there was too much talent to fit in one team for too long. Watched this (again!) made me think about great comedy teams. Laurel and Hardy, Marx Bros, Abbott and Costello, Bing and Bob, Stooges, The Two Ronnies, Pete and Dud (great English duos) etc... All of them had chemistry. Martin and Lewis were different to them all but had amazing chemistry, understanding and timing all of their own and were second to none. Don't see any current teams with what these guys had.. shame as the timing and skill a team builds up multiplies the comedic effect.

I like THIS version of Jerry Lewis. I never saw him working like this before. I wonder when he changed into a sort of split personality, or was it all just part of the act? What was that movie where he has two different sides, the one who is the cool guy/smooth/singer AND the 'professor'? Seemed as though he became BOTH Lewis and Martin.

Francis Serra The film you’re referring to was The Nutty Professor, made in 1963, some 7 years after the team split up. Your observation about the ‘split personality’ is very interesting because many people thought that he based the smooth (but rather obnoxious) alter-ego character of Buddy Love on Dean, although Jerry himself always denied that.

Dean was the spine of the act. Even Jerry wrote in his book that Dean would have eventually made it solo if they hadn't teamed up because of his massive talent, and added that no one would be interested in him doing record acts and shticks. The credit was all given to Jerry by the media and Dino got fed up. And so Dean left and became larger than Martin & Lewis itself... He had billboard hits, box office hits, sold out shows, and was the highest paid in TV that time. Jerry just made funny faces.

Oh yes. Jerry was immensely talented. I think comparing the amount he had before w/ Paramount equal to the money today, he still holds the title of the largest contract in Hollywood(?). He also invented video assist which became a standard in filmmaking from the day he started it to forever. I just can't stand the people here who discredits Dino as if he was never part of Martin & Lewis. People seem to forget that w/o Dean, Jerry would be nothing. And Jerry himself admits that.

T Wiley If you're going to give Dean his credit, then do it. But there's no need to try and downplay the man who helped Dean become a success in the nightclubs, on television, and in the movies. However, what I'm really stuck on is: how do you say, "I just can't stand the people here who discredits Dino as if he was never part of Martin & Lewis[,]" but in your other comments you do nothing but discredit Jerry as if he was insignificant to the duo, as a solo act, and a talent? Could you get anymore hypocritical? Then you try to give Jerry insincere credit after trashing him? Keep it. But let's acknowledge two things here: 1. Dean might have been more successful, but Jerry was more influential. Shocking, isn't it? Especially since the narrative is always Jerry never outdid Dean at anything, and it's not bad for a guy that you claim only "made funny faces" and only "wrote, directed, and produced comedy" as if that's an easy task. And before arguing about Dean being influential too, the point is his influence as a crooner, actor, and comedian doesn't come close to Jerry's as a comedian and director. 2. You're right about the fact that "w/o Dean, Jerry would be nothing." However, the same could be said that without Jerry, Dean would be nothing. It seems to be Dean fans forgetting that it's a two way street and that no one man was driving that act. But somehow there's this obsession with rewriting history as if Dean was this big star who had all the talent and Jerry just leeched off him. When truth be told, they both were flopping solo acts and going nowhere fast, despite being very talented. And if I'm not mistaken, wasn't it Jerry who lied to the owner of the 500 Club about him and Dean doing an act together (before actually becoming an act) just to get Dean a job? That's a tidbit that y'all love to skip over. Therefore, Jerry was just as instrumental in Dean's success as Dean was in Jerry's success.

Without each other they would not if the experience they both had. Jerry got a feel for how making films was like. Which help him learn his crafts. Likewise Dean learned how to ab-lib though anything plus the film experience help his acting career when he left Jerry. Dean singing only improve as time went on. What I am saying they learned from each other, down deep they care very much for each other down deep. They still making people smile and laugh who wasn't even born when they was together (I came along 2 years after the broke up). They both was great for what they each one did together, by themselves.

Don't get me wrong, I love Jer. But to say that he was more successful than Dino (like some people would argue here), is absurd. What I meant was Dean did just about everything and was successful in all, while Jerry just wrote, directed, and produced comedy. He was (and still one of) the most successful comedian, but he will never reach the heights Dino reached. Although I believe (& according to one of your bios) that he is the last American clown. Comedians today can't be funny w/o cussing.
