Jimmy was ad-libbing in the initial stages because Deano needed to be sobered up offstage during this live performance. But he managed to get away with it.

If you see him in interviews (eg Michael Parkinson) you will find that he had a wonderful and unigue comic style. He purposefully told this joke poorly to make fun of himself. He readily admitted he couldn't sing.
