Steven Torrey As a fan I agree with you, but from what one hears about Dean in his last few years I don’t think that’s what he would have wanted. After he and Jeannie lost Dean Paul in that tragic plane crash, everyone who knew him said that he was so devastated and heartbroken that he was never able to get over it, and more or less just gave up on life. Such a sad end for a man who had brought such laughter and happiness to so many people for so many years...

Vincent, Dean was the consummate professional. He could never achieved what he did by being "too casual". He held the highest standards for himself while performing.His easygoing natural singing ability was his his gift. He never took a singing lesson, unlike Sinatra who had to put in grueling hours of rehearsal to get it right. He may not have had the hits Sinatra did, but Sinatra didn't have a hit T.V. show that lasted 15 years...

From "PERRY COMO'S KRAFT MUSIC HALL" of February 13, 1964, pre-empting the weekly "KRAFT SUSPENSE THEATER" once a month on Thursdays at 10pm(et), originally telecast in color. Dean would occupy that very time period with his own variety series in the fall of 1965.

I been finding all the older entertainer on KZbin over the last year or so. The was not just singer they was entertainers. I have found Jerry and Dean and frank and Sammy. Found out about Judy Garland now I be checking out Perry. Love this clip and if it wasn't for KZbin I would not much about any of those above. So glad I got to know about these people. Time to google Perry and learn about him

@999YORK Jerry was a terrific singer. Wonderful voice. My parents collected at least a dozen of this albums. As an entertainer, however, he lacked the cosmopolitan charisma and the insouciance of a Dean Martin. Dean could applaud his own singing and not only get away with it, but endear himself to the audience. Jerry wouldn't dare do such a thing.
@lindashelley3635
@lindashelley3635 7 жыл бұрын
Don R The difference is that Jerry would mean it, but Dean was just taking the mickey out of himself. When you watch his shows, he was always the first one to laugh at himself and turn it into a joke when he messed up, or something went wrong. Apart from his obvious talent, I think that's what people loved about him, that he never had that 'don't you know who I am' attitude and certainly never expected people to treat him like a little tin god. Dean always came across as just like the bloke next door, who you could enjoy a pint with down the pub, or go to the football match with.

Dean was a great personality but did not leave a great song legacy. Had a great lower register but not much range. His songs sounded like he was somewhat tipsy when he sang them. There is a fault in being too casual. Like he didn't take his songs seriously enough.

Listen to "Only Trust Your Heart," for example, and see if you still think that. It's true that he often kept things light, but he could really sing.

did not leave a great song legacy? you must be smoking crack... what you call him "singing tipsy" is called song styling and he pulls it off because he has the voice to pull it off.
@EyeShotFirst
@EyeShotFirst 9 жыл бұрын
Vincent DeSapio For one, range isn't everything. People showing off in anything becomes boring if that's all there is to it. Dean's range was not limited if you listen to some of his live performances. Dean could soar without struggle. Just because he didn't pull a Mariah Carey and show off his range, did not mean he was lacking in that department. Perry Como was very much the same. Both singers sang in a very relaxed style, but they could reach for the sky if need be. Dean and Perry both became famous for their relaxed styles, and sort of ran with it. Listen to the recordings they made when they were Big Band vocalists, and you'll hear much more of their ability. Then to say he didn't have a great song legacy is preposterous. Dean had plenty of hits, and was a very hard working man behind the lazy drunk act he put on. Most of the songs Dean was recording were jazz standards that had been sung time and time again. Dean actually did more branching out than Sinatra ever did, by singing country and western songs. Those country records weren't novelty recordings either. He did them with as much love and care as he would his swinging recordings. You can't just look at Dean for singing alone. His legacy was the whole package of his comedic, acting, singing, and overall personality. Dean live isn't the same as Dean on record. When he sings a song like "I Will" or "Take These Chains From My Heart" you feel the respect he had for the song. Dean's voice also stayed relatively the same from the 40s all the way to the 80s. Sinatra's went through several changes, none were bad, but different.
@larrydonguy
@larrydonguy 9 жыл бұрын
+Vincent DeSapio Actually he left a pretty darn good legacy of recorded music: That's Amore, Sway, Return to Me, Volare, Everybody Loves Somebody. Along with those and other hits there are some "hidden" gems such as his superb cover of Hank Williams's I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry. That being said, I concede that his song legacy could have been even greater had he approached his musical performances anywhere near as seriously as his pal Sinatra did.
