Hello Dean. I sat in my English class at HP High School with you. I distinctly remember seeing you there with your guitar case, diligently working on your guitar. I also recall being envious of your purple Barracuda car parked outside. Great what you did with your guitar company.

Mr. Zelinsky, yours is a success story worthy of a book…or a really good podcast. I’ve been playing electric guitar professionally for 30yrs. I’ve owned just about every big-name brand of guitar at one time but sadly, never a Dean. I think my next purchase will be one of yours…used of course.

I grew up in Northbrook and my buddy and I (who both played guitar) used to ride our bikes to Doubleneck Deans shop. I remember one time you had an Orange Les Paul on a stand. We loved that we had a guitar shop in our area. Our music store was Gand Music when it was in the that little strip mall over by Northbrook Court. We saw the Dixie Dregs play in the parking lot there. This would have been around 1975-76.

How interesting. I was born in 56, grew up in Winnetka, had a Gibson 125, but wanted a solid body guitar. Watched Gary Gand play guitar often. Bought a Mini Moog from him in 74. We must have crossed paths at some point. I hated 6th grade.

I am not an Entourage fan. Podcast is in my office. My son worked on the show while in film school. He ended up with a lot of posters. I let him hang them in my office until he got his own home. That was 14 years ago. Turns out, he doesn’t want the posters. His wife recently told me I can get rid of them! They are coming down and being replaced with guitars!

Dean, thanks for doing these shows and telling your story! My good friend Rae Abbey worked for your company in the early 2000's after his gig with Roxx Gang in Tampa. Rae passed away a couple of years ago, but he always told me that working for Dean guitars was the best job he ever had. I've always had a tremendous respect for the things you've done in the guitar industry but didn't know much about you. Possible questions for future shows: What's your take on the current market with all of the "collector's" and "relic" guitars going for big money? What's your take on the increasing availability of quality guitars from import companies and how does that affect domestic business? What's it like having your name as a household name for anyone who takes up guitar?

Hey Dean, I'm left handed but play guitar right handed. Maybe that part of why the Dean ML totally clicked in my hands in early 1978. I bought it at Guitar City in Kaysville, Utah. I had three Gibsons, Les Paul gold top, white Explorer and a white double neck and the Dean became my main guitar. I was a music major at Snow College. I was the guitarist for the Jazz band. I took the Dean to California for West Coast competition at Chaffey College in Ontario California. I still have a black and white photo playing with the horn sections and the whole thing. Also, I met you at NAMM in Nashville maybe 2010? I told you about how I had a guitar discussion with Ed Van Halen after the Logan Ut show on the VHII tour, about the fifth stop. I explained all the things I liked about my Dean. He listened intently after I had listened to him about his guitar. Ed said he would try one out when he got back to LA. He was a man of his word. His mahogany Dean V was in the photo shoot that Zloz did where he was in the pink jump suit as Guitar Player of the Year. I asked Zloz by message about it and he called it his brown guitar. A few years ago, I found out he took the Dean V on the Japan dates of the VHII tour..I downloaded a photo where his Japan tour guitars are lined up and it was shot by a Japanese photographer. It was one of four he brought to Japan. I've been hoping to find a shot from the Japan dates of him playing it but no luck yet. Maybe I will. But, Ed was a man of his word, he did get a Dean while in LA after I talked to him. I remember you said you talked to him but he said he couldn't play it because that guy in The Cars plays one. I don't know where it ended up but I have photos of a Mahogany V with an added pickguard played by the guitarist in Du Brow after Rhoades split for Ozzy. There are shots of Randy Rhoades playing that Mahogany Dean V with DuBrow on a club date when he was off tour from Ozzy. Knowing now that they cannibalized each other's gear between Chris Holmes and others that Dean V that Ed had may have also been played by Randy at a Du Brow show. I haven't been able to connect all the dots, maybe if I talk to Chris Holmes some time. If you want copies of all the photos I'm talking about I can send them in FB or IG messages, let me know.

That store in Kaysville bought a lot of Dean Guitars. A guy named Kip Olsen. Yes I have pics of Randy Rhoads and EVH with the Red V. Not sure the story behind these. I spoke with Eddie a few times in later year, never talked guitars. The second time I met him was in an elevator at Namm. He just took a drink out of my hands and downed it. Not sure he knew who I was!

@@Deanzelinskyguitars I'm hoping to find a link. All these Ed stories, they bought and sold gear to each other, or trade. I'm hoping there is a link. Yep, Kip, I think Lois Lane which used to be a Chicago band kicked off the Dean thing in Utah. That's where I saw one. I know a band named Future all bought Deans after they opened for us in 1980.

Cool Interview Dean. Sounds like you have a good right hand man for making guitars. I find it interesting he started in marketing and grew into the CNC and technical side. I Engineer for one of the big 3 and been in factory work for 20 years. I'm 39 and at this age I really love in deptht podcast like these and Gibson has the Icons series and I've ran through that and Rick Beato's interviews and this one was pretty good. I have had 43 guitars, I just plaly and colllect for therapy but one of my oldest guitars is a 2007 Dean Vendetta Trans Blue VN4.0. It is the guitar I will keep for life because it was a gift my parents and I went half and half on for my college graduation gift. It still looks brand new and thet 2 Razorbacks I got do as well. Thank you very much for the great playing guitars and keepin on with it. Also the respect you show to Dime I also really respect but your story is amazing as well. A little long but just wanted to show appreciation. I used to think I was an Ibanez fan but after getting my 42nd and 43rd guitar, I have changed my stance to really loving the Dean guitars. I love the look of your new guitars. I wish one day to play one, they are gorgeous! Much love, Mike

I can't see how a left-hander plays right-handed. Back in the early 70s, it was impossible to find a decent LH guitar. I resorted to playing RH guitars upside-down, strings and all. Finally got a LH guitar in 96, but cut a new nut straight out, and still string it upside-down. Lol

I`m the proud owner of a gorgeous Dean Koa wood acoustic/electric...the least expensive Koa version that I ordered on "A" for under 300. There`s one buzzy fret but no way was I returning it because they might scrap it or break it during shipping. I hope to have it looked at some day. My doctors encouraged me to play again (car accident) but my old one was worn out. Adjusting the neck and raising the strings a bit high reduces the buzz or a capo behind the first fret. I have no idea what`s causing it exactly. It sounds amazing plugged in and it`s working. I`m in the boondocks with no car so I can`t take it to have it set up how I like it and diagnose the exact issue.

@26:16 It's always fascinating to hear the life stories of successful people like Dean Z. because they realize early on how school suffocates your individuality and does very little to support your creativity. It's all about conformity. You might get some music classes or art classes but in the end public school is all about teaching you what to think not how to think, never about challenging the status quo or following your dreams.
