Yeah, there's definitely a Mainz-Wiesbaden rivalry. Wiesbaden was always viewed as being more for upper-class people and maybe being more snobby by the Mainzers. But Mainz is now getting more expensive to live in while available apartments are becoming scarce. It's not the hidden gem that it once was just a few years ago. A lot of my friends there have had to move further and further out. I'm heavily bias being half-American, and half-Mainzer, but I'd highly recommend moving there if the opportunity knocks.

Over the last 20 years Wiesbaden lost its former beauty and charm, little still left, due to unfortunate decicions made by the city magistrate. The neglect becomes obvious when you leave the park areas and walk through the city center. The elegant shops have mostly vanished and that is not all that changed to the worse. So sieht es aus….so viel Gesindel tummelt sich in Wiesbaden unglaublich! Anfang der 2000er war das eine ganz andere Stadt!

K-Town was my grandpa’s first duty station out of the US in the 50s. A couple months into his assignment his American girl friend followed him to Germany (by ship) … they were the first American couple that got married at the Standesamt in Kaiserslautern 😊. Over the course of the following years they had three daughters, PCSed all over the place and got stationed in Germany a total of 3 times. They moved to a small village close to Wiesbaden during his 3rd tour…and decided to stay once he had retired from the air-force and got himself a contractor job. All his daughters ended up marrying a German and stayed as well ….Ironically, decades later, his granddaughter - me 😉 - met an US soldier stationed in Kaiserslautern, got married and after a few years received orders for Fort Bragg / Fayetteville North Carolina ….which is approximately 15 miles away from my grandpa’s home town 😅 I personally love Wiesbaden … unlike Mainz, it wasn’t really bombed during WWll, so all the incredibly beautiful old houses remained intact.

The American influence on Wiesbaden all but disappeared after September 11th. Where we used to be able to drive through american neighborhoods and used to see tons of the high school students and military personell downtown on any given weekend, the neighborhoods are now fenced in and the only Americans you see downtown now are civilian tourists. Definitely no military. They are pretty much groomed to stay in their areas and be afraid of going outside now. I've lived in the Mainz/Wiesbaden area for over 32 years now. I spent 14 years in Mainz before moving to one of the Wiesbaden suburbs zo be closer to work... Stupidest decision I ever made. Mainz is nicer, friendlier and more affordable. Wiesbaden is snobby, expensive, and the city government has bungled just about every decision they've made since the early 2000s. As a result, the inner city has become less attractive, and important old traditional shops and institutions have either closed or left . Downtown has lost a lot of its former glory. If I could afford it, I would move back to Mainz in a split second.
