Yeah, there's definitely a Mainz-Wiesbaden rivalry. Wiesbaden was always viewed as being more for upper-class people and maybe being more snobby by the Mainzers. But Mainz is now getting more expensive to live in while available apartments are becoming scarce. It's not the hidden gem that it once was just a few years ago. A lot of my friends there have had to move further and further out. I'm heavily bias being half-American, and half-Mainzer, but I'd highly recommend moving there if the opportunity knocks.

It is just perfectly located if you like to travel, we love spending a weekend in Straßburg which is only about 2 1/2 hours drive. And there is so much to do an dicover in the areas directly around in Wiesbaden. The Rheingau is amazingly beautifull. Just be aware of our huge traffic troubles. For month and month the "Salzbachtalbrücke" has been our curse (there was even a radio jingel made for by a radio station they played for the at least twice daily really big traffic jams) and it was blown up just last weekend. Until the bridge is rebuild we will continue to have terrible traffic. And traffic politics in Wiesbaden in generall a big problem, even without the Salzbachtalbrücke.

K-Town was my grandpa’s first duty station out of the US in the 50s. A couple months into his assignment his American girl friend followed him to Germany (by ship) … they were the first American couple that got married at the Standesamt in Kaiserslautern 😊. Over the course of the following years they had three daughters, PCSed all over the place and got stationed in Germany a total of 3 times. They moved to a small village close to Wiesbaden during his 3rd tour…and decided to stay once he had retired from the air-force and got himself a contractor job. All his daughters ended up marrying a German and stayed as well ….Ironically, decades later, his granddaughter - me 😉 - met an US soldier stationed in Kaiserslautern, got married and after a few years received orders for Fort Bragg / Fayetteville North Carolina ….which is approximately 15 miles away from my grandpa’s home town 😅 I personally love Wiesbaden … unlike Mainz, it wasn’t really bombed during WWll, so all the incredibly beautiful old houses remained intact.

It is worth noting that WI has one the hippest and overall best music venues in Germany, the Schlachthof right behind Hauptbahnhof. It's big room has a capacity of 2.000 so it is large enough to host some really popular bands, lots of indie rock, hiphop and singer-songwriter concerts. There is also a smaller room for club concerts plus, of course, a nice beergarden. In the summer they always hold some huge open air concerts. Also WI has some unique independent movie theaters and numerous film festivals. Just in case you develop a taste for classical music anytime in the future, Kurhaus and Staatstheater have a lot of those concerts plus every summer there is the Rheingau Musik Festivals, one of the most prestigious classical music festivals in Europe. Thanks to it being the gateway to the Rheingau wine region there are also lots of Weinfeste in WI. So there is a lot going on all throughout the year. Not to forget that the Christmas market is really nice as well. The US military housing is indeed at the edge of the city and the airbase even further out in Erbenheim, half-way to Mainz. But the US community in WI is strong, about 20.000 people. The European headquarter of the US Army is base in WI.

If you will decide to live in Wiesbaden, than I have a hint for you. Don’t rent a flat in Wiesbaden itself, looking for a flat in Tainusstein. It’s a Verbandsgemeinde very close to Wiesbaden, but the location is much nicer. You have better fresh air due to the forests around The area Kaiserslautern had more military bases than Wiesbaden. In Kaiserslautern were two army bases, a big tank brigade and a big infantry brigade, the biggest military hospital in Landstuhl and than the airbase Ramstein. If I am right, than about over 30,000 soldiers(GIs, pilots, ground crews, hospital members) were based there additional their families. Therefore the influences are bigger than somewhere else in Europe

What a beautiful City! I hope to come to Germany one day to really experience it because the Frankfurt Airport does not count :(

I fell in love with the city the first time I visited it - so much different from other cities in Hessen. However there is a downside to it too. If you do not have a car and have to use public transport, then it sucks big times! Unlike a lot of German cities it does not have a tram (Straßenbahn) but only buses. Which means if there is a traffic jam, then you are stuck in that jam just like any other car if you are on a bus (normal situation between 8-10 am and around 16-18 pm). It doesn't happen if there is a tram (at least have never experienced it in Darmstadt, Frankfurt, Heidelberg or Mainz).

Thank you both so much. I really enjoyed this. I was stationed at the United States Air force hospital in Wiesbaden in the early '70s. Your video brought back a lot of great memories.

love greetings from Wiesbaden, great report - the next visit at Christmas time, check the "Sternschnppenmarkt" pictures... Thumbs up... PS: the Army area is a bit outside, the main part is at Erbenheim, there is an Airbase and a bigger living area... But therer are a lot more areas on the outskirts - Hainerberg Village and Aukamm area

I lived in Wiesbaden for over 6 years back in the 80's and early 90's. There used to be a great Mexican food restaurant fairly close to the Biebriech castle. My favorite restaurant was an Italian place called Scheffelstubens, on Sheffelstrasse not far from the Baunhauf. Anyway, hope you folks ended up choosing Weisbaden. I miss it terribly and loved seeing old familiar sites in your video. Thanks for posting it.

8:10 Marktkirche, Rathaus, Landtag. All in one shot. Nice. So for those non-German viewers: Market Church, Council House, State Parliament. Wiesbaden is Hesse's captal city, not Frankfurt. Right after the war many cities tried to become the new capital city of western Germany. Frankfurt spent all of its money and influence on trying for that position. Wiesbaden on the other hand simply offered their position as Hessen's capital, not as Germany's capital. So when Bonn became the new capital, Frankfurt was massively pissed off that it neither was the German, nor even Hessen's capital. My grandparents on my father's side, as well as both my parents lived in Wiesbaden for quite some time. I remember quite a lot about the city from my many visits to my grandparents there. Neroberg definitely is one of the more wealthy areas to look for an apartment. So don't expect lower rents there. Wiesbaden, the same as Mainz, was once an ancient Roman fortification that eveolved into a city later. The Romans really appreciated the many hot springs and built their pubic baths around them. Biebricher Schloßpark: very nice park. Each year there is the Pfingstturnier with horses there. The tall trees in the park have been colonized by the descendants of a pair of escaped canary birds. They have demonstrated a remarkable resistance to some of the cold winters. So currently there are several hundred canaries flying wild in the park and surroundings. At one end of the park is the Wasserschloß, at the other end the Biebricher Schloß (at 15:01 to 15:50). Very nice little stroll, right down to the Rhine River.

As a German working in Wiesbaden I can say that it's true that it is a beautiful city with a great amount of cultural and historical places. But for me it's the people who often make it not the nicest city around. They tend to either be arrogant or even rude at some points. If you cross the river Rhine and go to Mainz, it's a whole different vibe in my eyes. Yet I totally agree with most of the points you made, that's just my very personal experience.

Confirmed. I lived in Wiesbaden for 29 years. While the city itself is more beautiful than Mainz, many people are ‘schickimicki‘ (fancy-schmancy) or just very old, while the Mainz population is more down to earth and younger due to many students.

I live in Wiesbaden and your words describe exactly my thoughts. It's the people in a town that makes it nice or not. I even think about moving to Mainz now as it is much more relaxed there...

I hope you will come back someday and film the west side of the city which is the Nordfriedhof (beautiful), the Dürer-Anlage, Klarenthal, a weird church building called Mariä Heimsuchung, the valley town Dotzheim and it's forestpark and the very long street called Dotzheimer street which has tons of unique stores. I would love to see you present it one day. Maybe when you visit another city in the Hessen area, you can make a short stop at Wiesbaden again? I loved the video here and you did a great job of showing the city I was born in. Thanks.
