Lyrics - William Douglas
Music - Alicia Scott
Performer - Deanna Durbin
Recorded in 1936 by a 14 year old Deanna Durbin. The maturity of her voice is remarkable here.
Maxwelton's braes are bonnie,
Where early fa's the dew,
'Twas there that Annie Laurie
Gi'ed me her promise true.
Gi'ed me her promise true -
Which ne'er forgot will be,
And for bonnie Annie Laurie
I'd lay me down and dee.
Her brow is like the snaw-drift,
Her neck is like the swan,
Her face it is the fairest,
That 'er the sun shone on.
That 'er the sun shone on -
And dark blue is her e'e,
And for bonnie Annie Laurie
I'd lay me down and dee.
Like dew on gowans lying,
Is the fa' o' her fairy feet,
And like winds, in simmer sighing,
Her voice is low and sweet.
Her voice is low and sweet -
And she's a' the world to me;
And for bonnie Annie Laurie
I'd lay me down and dee.

My dear mommy passed away last year and I will never forget how she was a like to Deanna in her beautiful face and smiling. She used to imitate her in the hair style and a bit of singing. Deanna reminds me my sweat mom, so I always turn to KZbin for Deanna and recall my mother...lovely

I was just looking into my family tree and ended up here because this song was written for my ancestor Annie Laurie. I read that it's now known as an old Scottish love song. It's amazing how much we can learn about our relatives. Beautiful singing from Deanna.

I have relatives named after this song too. A grandmother and a sister. The family story is that my great grandfather heard the song during the civil war.

Just to be honest for the sake of this video. Feel free to look us up. My real name is James Robert Laurie. My father is Adrian Robert Laurie. His father was Casper Robert Laurie. The family tree goes back a few generations to where we had Barron's for ancestors. Which is around about the time this was recorded.

@@Spudvivi The really fantastic thing about spelling, punctuation, capitalization (etc) is that it enables us to communicate coherently with other people, using the written word. "Barron's for ancestors" don't mean nu'ting, frankly

Peace can come only through the Immaculate Heart of Mary. God the Father poured out His wrath upon the nations for the rejection of His Divine Son. In a final act of mercy Jesus Christ sent His own beloved Mother to warn the world to turn from sin and bring peace to individuals, families and nations. This hour of mercy was confirmed on October 13, 1917 by a great public miracle witnessed by 70k people and reported in very anti-clerical newspapers and periodicals. This miracle saw the sun detach from the firmament, hurtle towards the earth threateningly. Witnesses believed it was the end of the world. It was not but was a prelude. This merciful loving Mother also was largely ignored. The enemy therefore, has risen to drown the world in hate and strife. My Jesus, mercy!

I came to this song after findig a book called New National & Folk Song Book, I sung it to myself strait from the book, tipsy and after abondoning any effort to play the tune on my keyboard. I imagined the song to be sung by a gruff and almost viking like tune, as if rowing. But when I looked for the tune on youtube, it was entirly different. Non of the lyrics I sung could be heard in the recording and I felt a calm come over me, it was beautiful. And the book still claimed the same words were from William Douglas.
