I was a "closet" Carpenter's fan back in the day, but the number of Klipschorn loudspeakers she sold at the high end audio store I worked at part time back in the mid 70's was truly astonishing. The sales associate would welcome in a group of Doctors or Lawyers taking an extended lunch break to do some stereo shopping. In they would go to the closed door listening room and the first song the sales guy would play would be KAren singing the Leon Russel classic "This Masquerade". IT truly sounded like she was in the room with the listeners. More times than not they were headed to the cash register to order a pair of the "corner horns" and the electronics to go with the speakers. Certainly the greatest Alto of the 20th Century. Their music will live forever. God Bless the Carpenters!!

And why put Benny and Bjorn over Carpenters and Beatles? Good question, here is THE answer. Benny and Bjorn(ABBA)wrote ALL of their songs,,,every damn one of them. Many of Beatles and Carpenters songs were covers. It is not a coincidence that Benny wrote all their songs from the keyboard. Benny never had a piano lesson either.

Someone needs to make a comment since over 2 years ago !!!!!! This album should never be forgotten. Social media has take over and we get from female singers is high pitched scream (not blaming them but blaming the money making moguls). Her pure voice is a legacy that today's money makers have NO chance of repeating.
@skierpage

Come on. Adele and Beyonce are phenomenal singers, Katy Perry is solid, and season after season people you'll never hear of again belt out songs like there's no tomorrow on reality talent shows. The quality of vocalists today is really high, and they all record their own background harmonies as the Carpenters did ( because there's no money to hire top background vocalists for a session 😓). It is true that Autotune can make anyone sound weirdly decent, and the production choices producers make for pop records are often that weirdly out-of-tune rap-influenced whine. But the raw talent is assuredly there. What's missing is the deep dark blue background of sadness from which Karen Carpenter's voice springs! I have never heard it equaled.

My favourite Carpenters album. With the whole of one side devoted to this medley its a great reminder of the style and music of 1960's America. Takes me back to being a kid and being fed a diet of Bewitched, Mary Tyler Moor and Dick van Dyke on TV in the UK which America look so glamorous and grown-up.

I remember when I was in junior high in Ballwin MO(About 25 miles outside of St.Louis) I was a KSLQ(now Y-98 FM) listener and they played all the Top 40 hits and they also played what they called “Carpenters Collage” which turned out to be an edited version of this oldies medley-I thought this was a special record A&M made available only to radio stations-I never knew until I started streaming on YT that the unedited version was always on the “Now and Then” album-of course when this first came out I was a red-blooded teen male who DID NOT want anyone-especially my He-Man brothers-that I liked The Carpenters-because even then I knew that Karen sang better than most any other artist on wax back in the day-or that Richard was a better arranger-producer than just about any other 1970’s knob-twister!!! This medley is incredible-plus you get to hear Richard sing lead-he had a real decent voice too!!! And I ❤️the between-song monologue! So 1960’s Top 4O 📻 radio!!!

The rich velvety tones of Karen's incredible voice is captivating and ageless, and she and Richard made this duo a massive hit in the 70's that still attracts a great following today. The incredible talent of the Carpenters is still being discovered today by a much younger generation who really appreciate the beauty of Karen's voice and the beautiful harmony which over dubbing created to make their music so perfect. Never a tone missed and no auto tuning surprises many of today's youth at the flawless quality of their music. I love to see the reactions of some KZbin users who listen in awe and comment on how wonderful this REAL music is. Absolutely amazing!

This has to be one of the greatest album cuts of all recorded music. It certainly is a favorite of mine, bringing back memories of the world of my childhood, before everything became so confusing. Back when music spoke to the very heart of the listener. Back before "rap" turned the culture into a "gansta' thug life" mentality.

Not heard this medley of songs for a number of years now. I got the original LP and played it to death virtually. All these years later it still astounds that Karens voice and Richards production could produce such a magical 20 minutes. Her voice is so rich on every track. The finale ONE FINE DAY and Johnny Angel the stand outs for me. Absolutely brilliant and its never dated one little bit.

What a masterful arrangement of the oldies with such great, fun stuff. I well remember the days when DJs would play that jumbled mix of voices. Hilarious. The rich harmonies just can't be beat. And then Karen's closing piece "When I was young I'd listen.. " with the reverb echo of "so fine" just gives me goosebumps.
