@@davedagreat69 I guess because no one ever uses it to mean they do care, it's not an auto antonym. Instead it's like flammable and inflammable... its meaning is clear and consistent, and it becomes just like any other idiom. Only take it literally if you want to be purposefully obtuse.

@@misterkite This is the sad truth I've come to realise. Language is not shaped by the great minds of our time, it's shaped by the morons who fail to learn how to use it properly, because they are more plentiful. That's why, in the future in the UK, words like better and forty will be pronounced without the hard "t" sound. They will be pronounced Be'er and for'y, because people who can't speak very well pronounce them that way. It's a living language, and it moves at the pace of the slowest people, who seem to get on TV a lot somehow. :D

Americans saying "go ahead and..." kills me. My mate was in america and took driving lessons. The instructor told him to "go ahead and reverse". I also watched an instructional video once, and every step was along the lines of "then go ahead and do this, and once that's done, go ahead and do this, then we're gonna go ahead and join those two". Did my head in. Feel better after this rant though.

So annoying!

@@LuckyDucky917 - Yes. They also missed out on the wonderful audio books read by Stephen Fry as well because they got Jim Dale to record alternative versions using the Americanisms instead. They really do not give their own people the credit of being able to work out the slight cultural differences. I mean, substituting 'trash can' for 'dustbin' is one of the most pathetic, but your example of using 'Mom' instead of 'Mum' is absurd.

@@LuckyDucky917 - not to labour the point, but look at all the UK TV shows the US companies feel it necessary to remake despite the initial success of the original versions in America. The list is endless, and invariably the translation dilutes the original's appeal and fails. "Coupling', 'Red Dwarf', 'Fawlty Towers', 'Life On Mars' and now also 'Utopia' are the immediate examples I can think of that needed no 'extra' treatment from others. The rare success like 'The Office' unfortunately only serves to encourage them - but look at how long that lumbered on, beyond its shelf life.

As you can see this was written in part by the comedian John Finnemore. He often writes for TV but doesn't often take the starring role. On radio however John Finnemore is absolutely one of the funniest comedians currently writing in the UK. If you don't mind reacting to audio only, I'd suggest listening to his show "John Finnemore's souvenir program." - a few of his sketches have also been animated and put on youtube... so they might be worth checking out. He also wrote the radio sitcom Cabin Pressure which starred Dr. Strange himself Benedict Cumberbatch.

The one Im hearing all the time now to the extent that Im beginning to doubt myself is the use of 'bring' instead of 'take'. Someone says 'I always bring a good book on a flight', is a fine saying if you are ON the flight at the time. If you are at home, its "I always take a good book on a flight". Surely you 'bring' something 'here', and you 'take' something 'there'. Saying you 'bring something there' sounds like a lesser version of 'can you borrow me a fiver' or 'can you learn me how to do that', the direction is specific to the verb.

British English has a lot of u's in words like honour, colour, flavour, favourite and humour. The American lexicographer Noah Webster sought to simplify the English language in the 1800's gaining enough influence to change the spelling of certain words. This was helped along by the anti British sentiment after the American revolution. He also influenced the simplification of words like theatre, plough and centre. His efforts took hold resulting in the split between British and American English that we see today in spelling and pronunciation as touched on by David Mitchell.

Always freaks me out when Americans drop the 'h' on words like 'herb'. That's a Jamaican thing,
@lordsummerisle87

I believe that it's more of a French/Norman thing that's hung on in American (and, I guess, Jamaican) English but fallen by the wayside in British English at some point since the 17th century.

This was funny as hell. I was in Manchester UK one time and this American chap came up to me and said the most funniest thing anyone as ever said to a stranger, he said "This country is so called full of English people but I've not yet met one that speaks it, do you" ?🤣🤣👍

Many years ago I was in a bar in Charleston South Carolina. Now I admit I may have a little bit to drink and may have been slurring my words ... ... but I was told by the americans who I had got talking to in the bar - 'Can you please speak English' ... my reply of 'But I am English' ended that grammatical request.

It’s funny to compare the way things are spelt or said and I know I’ve definitely picked up certain Americanisms from growing up on Disney channel e.g like David says I’ll say re search rather than research and skedule instead of shedule , the one thing I’ll never understand though is why Americans spell laser with a z when it’s an acronym

Probably also depends on your accent and class. I have never said schedule or research the supposed right way either.

@@AfterWorkReactions So, Josh, are you going to be a missionary for 'I couldn't care less' now? Please. What you do (Covid permitting) is seek out large groups, of people, and find something you don't care about. Then loudly declare that you 'couldn't care less' about it! If you have sufficient things you don't care about - it's only a matter of time before the tide starts to turn and Americans become less annoying! :)

Oddly enough, the American spelling of "aluminum" is the original. That's one is a case of the English changing a word to fit the English standard rather than the usual corruption of English into American.

@hyrulesarnian932

Neither's the original, the original was "alumium". "Aluminum" was the first change, "aluminium" the second. And it was changed to fit the international scientific standard, not the English standard.

"Can I get" annoys me, yes you can 'get' whatever you want but who's going to 'get' it for you? "Can I have" implies that you require that person to 'get' something for you. My wife is a barmaid and when someone asks her if they can 'get' a pint she simply answers 'yes' and does nothing.

There's this American speech thing i noticed on the big bang theory, can't remember the exact quote but it's something like "I'm going over there and tell him what to do" where as in Britain I would say "I'm going over there and telling him what to do" with the additional "-ing"

watch him in "Upstart Crow" playing Shakespear, truly in his element, just wish I could stop saying "Futterking" instead of, well you can guess, DAMN YOU David Mitchell. Because I can truely say screaming "You are a Futterking Arsehole" at someone is strangely more satisfying than the traditional way, who knew ?
