I wish this came with a disconnectable ribbon cable which was slightly longer, and a universal hotshoe or arri-mount for the monitor so it was compatible with cages and/or top tophandles

@@incee_netinai It's also very bulky and bigger than things like a Komodo, Raptor, C70, FX6, etc. And that sloped back design is dated. Hell, even industry giant ARRI listened with the LF, Mini LF, and Alexa 35. And I think the new, lasting trend of monitor designed by the manufacturer with absolute unbeatable camera control is also a new thing BM should look into. BUT, baby steps. All Blackmagic needs to do is take the guts of the 6k pro and put them into a box-style form factor with a v-lock or NP-F battery mount (see: Z-Cam) and I would buy one tomorrow. They don't need to change anything else just the form factor. It's so confusing to me that they have stubbornly stuck with this dslr-style body that was already controversial when it was first released and at this point just feels very out of touch with the wants and needs of the professionals who use it.
@initialfocus
@initialfocus 10 ай бұрын
The amount of times I’ve contemplated just 3D printing a new outer shell and just throw the guts inside 😂 like you said that’d be all that’s needed. I mean at this point I think it also could use a dynamic range bump 13 stops (11.5 actual) is a bit behind for 2024 but besides that I’d be good with no other change hah
@handcraftedcinematography1238
@handcraftedcinematography1238 10 ай бұрын
@@initialfocus Eh, the dynamic range isn't bad. CineD gives it 11.8 at SN ratio of 2. That's almost 12 usable stops, which is pretty standard even among higher end cameras. And increasing dynamic range is not a simple fix. BlackMagic usually sources their sensors from a third party (Sony) so they are limited to what's available on the market, and developing a whole new sensor would likely drive up the cost, which would make the camera less appealing. The form factor however, is a pretty east fix that shouldn't cost much to develop and it's something BlackMagic could do right away. I'm also thinking about the new full frame BlackMagic Cinema Camera 6k, which more than likely uses the same sensor as the S1H, which has some of the best dynamic range on the market (including cinema cameras), yet they still inexplicably used the old body style. So in my eyes the dynamic range complaint is not as crucial, and has probably already been addressed with the new Cinema Camera. The design of the body though... could be the reason budget filmmakers eventually leave them behind if they don't fix it.

Honestly, I was thinking it would be cool if whoever made this made a video port for the monitor at the top instead of hard wiring the monitor it self. Why? If they made the monitor attach with a cable to the port and gave it a simple 1/4" at the bottom, then we could treat it like an external monitor, and offset the monitor anywhere we want, and allowing us to use almost any existing cage as well. This would allow people to place the monitor in any configuration they want for accessibility without compromising they cage options, much, and would also open up some really creative layouts for monitor placement when rigging out for larger productions. This also would open up the design to be more universal, working with both older pockets and newer pocket designs equally well, because the monitor wouldn't be dependent on the existing body like this version is.
@Studiotek
@Studiotek 10 ай бұрын
Even better, run the cable internally to a hot shoe on top. Then have the monitor's internal cable run to a 360° rotatable mount on the bottom. That would just be... AMAZING! 😍
@billyoung9538
@billyoung9538 10 ай бұрын
@@Studiotek That was one of my original thoughts as well, except a hot-shoe would alter the form factor. That would break almost all existing cages when one could simply add a hot shoe to the top 1/4" and link a cable for the same fundamental effect; however, I had thought they could make a port that a custom cage fit around, and in theory could pass the monitor info to the cages hot-shoe. That way one can get a quality cage and run it cage-less or with an existing cage. anyhow there are a lot of options.

Would love BM to add an articulating swing out sideways screen like the Sony A7R V. This way you retain a top cold shoe for a handle and can still articulate the screen up or face it to the front. As for vmount compatibility, this is still possible with 3rd party swing down mounts like those from small rig for the A7R V. Arca Swiss mounted, and can swing the battery down to access the articulating screen. Small rig could easily make a version for this camera that orients the battery horizontally.

I get that the black magic audience excites easily, but let’s call a spade a spade. No top handle can be a drawback. Take, for example, my New Year's Eve video shoot at the Hard Rock Casino - capturing crowd reactions, local DJs at the center bar, and James Kennedy on the main stage. Shooting all this without a top handle? Unthinkable. It's crucial to specify that this setup is ideal for tripod, shoulder mount, and gimbal operations. Perhaps consider an extended rugged ribbon option with a monitor port for added versatility.

Every cine camera should be having this global shutter and that they would develop their own lidar follow. Focus wireless follow focus instead of trying to deal with auto focus internally do with some of these other companies such as PD will be live and DG have their light auto focus. I still think Tilta had the best mod for this. I recently did the Tilta mod on my 4K and I have to say it's miles better than this. you have more flexibility for screen angles. The screen returns to it's original position so storage isn't an issue. You don't lose the 12v functionality while gaining an "internal" ssd slot. Finally no exposed cables. I still get to use a top handle and a full cage while keeping my rig small, balanced with only one cable for d-tap power. Also given the position of monitor with this mod, it makes adding anything else to the body a chore. I you want to use a shotgun of any kind, good luck. Not to mention you know have your monitor in a very vulnerable position. It's a decent idea but I don't think it's as practical as some are saying.

I would actually like the monitor to be separate from the body, attaching to the top via a hot shoe connection (no ribbon needed). Making it so we can face the monitor towards the cameraman, or flipped around so people could film themselves. Kill two birds with one stone. Make the body cube like with an included handle that can be attached to the side of the body. Or keep the same ergonomics of the current body. Using the same body design isn't a deal breaker for me as it might be for others. EDIT: Possibly design the monitor with ridges so you could attach a sun hood for outdoor filming.

I think it's prob because their screens. They have a great menu system that everyone loves and they would have to make all that much smaller. I agree though I'd love a more box style.

As cool as it is for a DIY mod, I would definitely NOT want BMD to release a camera made that way. Having a built-in screen on top of the camera?! No way.. Dont get me wrong.. It's totally okay to use an external monitor set on top of the camera.. but at least you can unmount it and reconfigure the rig as you need it to be for different shooting scenarios. Try to stand up and make an eye-level shot with a monitor on top of your camera.. you have to tilt your head up to look at it.. definitely NOT ergonomic. It kind of became a ''cool thing'' to make your camera rig like if the only way to hold it is from below. Not all shots have to be from a low angle. If BMD ever release a camera that is made that way, it would introduce an even bigger issue.. which is that the camera would no longer be versatile. Most users ask for a box-shaped camera body so it's as modular as possible. I do agree that minimalistic rigs are super useful, but it has to be modular in order to adapt to different shooting scenarios. What would be awesome and a total game changer though, is to finally make a camera that has a dedicated 5'' ''fully articulated'' external monitor that allows users to reconfigure the rig however they want. If they could find a clever way to make a modular monitor for their cameras, that would be the ideal scenario IMO. Not connected to a HDMI port.. but to a dedicated port that would allow touch screen, menu control, etc. Maybe even something with strong magnets, or any clever mount design that would make the camera as modular as possible. I think BMD should use RED and Apple as their inspiration for the design.

I agree with most of what you're saying. But here is one thing to consider. If BMD took a page from RED or Apple they would lose more than the would gain. Part of the appeal to BMD is how affordable their system is. Not everybody has the desire, need or budget to run out and by a $6000+ camera body. Yes the ergonomic could be improved there isn't a debate to be had about that. But I can't like and say that having a color accurate 5" screen already on my camera hasn't been a huge benefit for many situations. I wouldn't trade that for a smaller articulating screen for any reason. I think the best solution would be to have the same screen attached via a articulating pivot at the middle top of the screen. That way it would be able to pop out and rotate. Yes it would add a notch to the back but that I think that would solve the issue without having to do a complete redesign. Another obvious solution is to do exactly what Tilta gave us as a mod a couple years ago. I did that to my 4K and it's made major difference.

@@Mr_Moka I don’t think that because BMD make ridiculously affordable cinema cameras that they are not allowed to have a little more expensive model with a much improved design. Everybody agree on that.. most of them would easily throw another grand to solve some issues and make the whole thing much better. It would still be an incredibly affordable cinema camera. Why are you even talking about 6000$+ ? The 6K Pro is like 2500$… add another grand of better design and were looking at a 3500$ cinema camera. If someone can’t afford that, that’s totally okay but clearly he/she shouldn’t think about cinema cameras at all (or just be happy with the lower priced model). The RED/Apple comparison was just a figure of speech, and I know a lot of time and effort is involved in the design development = $$$, but lots of random ambitious people create super innovative stuff and get supported with Kickstarter lol so I don’t see why BMD would not pull this off..

I understand where you’re coming from. I only said $6000+ because that’s the nearest competition with some of the features people are looking for (mostly in the 6K resolution market). I’m not anting that at $3500 it wouldn’t be a great deal. But I also don’t think with a complete design change we would be looking at only $1000 increase.

@@Mr_Moka Talk with engineers. I don’t see why a new design would necessarily costs thousands more.. when they first released the second gen of Pocket cameras (after the tiny one), it was a completely new design packed with LOTS of new features and they managed to keep the cost super low. Also, i’m not even complaining about the plastic body (it’s still sturdy enough and cameras in this price range aren’t made to last infinitely anyways).. but they could definitely make it much better without increasing the price above 3500$. There’s absolutely no doubt in my mind.. but hey, let’s just hope that they finally bring something new that will actually ONLY solve problems and not revert on other features were not ready to lose. Marketing is a bitch man, and companies always look at the competition.. giving us new features drop by drop. They will make sure their new camera has something better than the competition in the same price range (just like the 6K FF with Open Gate in BRAW, while the S5II/X can only do it in H.265). I do miss some things about my BMPCC6K, but I’m still way happier overall with my S5IIX.

As far as modding a camera oneself... Well that's a tough call. It doesn't take much to turn these things into bricks. So an error in judgment can cost the price of the camera and the mods. Once the company that makes the parts takes charge and does it for the end user. Like Tilta did for a while. For a fee of course, then it would be the greatest thing. but till then it's hard to open the camera up mess with the inner works without being fearful. Blackmagic really disappointed many of its faithful followers with the refried BMPCC that's not a BMPCC. Really??!!! The damn thing is a pocket camera but it's no longer categorized as a pocket camera?? Enough games. so many other companies are kicking Blackmagic's ass. They're a bit pricier, but they deliver the type of gear creatives want. I'm not buying another BM camera till they get their act together and go for broke on a square design. Do it already!!

And I’ll probably make about $20 on this video views lol I made it because I think it’s a cool mod and for someone like me could be a huge improvement in ergonomics. Just because it’s not for you doesn’t make it a useless product.
