I think a lot of people don't realize that the hoodie symbolizes that evan is becoming more and more like conner. He stops listening to others, and becomes way more secluded. Heck, in the scene where Conner and Evan are talking about telling the truth, their hoodies are actually identical. And when he finally decides to tell the truth, it shows that he could do the one thing Conner couldn't do. (Or idk, maybe I'm just blind.)

Okay I just rewatched this again because it is the bomb and I just realized the significance of the colors. Everything that isn't real/isn't actually there is in color- Alana, Jared, Connor, the tree. Everything that is real or actually present, like Evan and his mom and the house, is black and white. BUT WHAT I JUST REALIZED is that in the scene with the orchard, every single thing is in color except for the letters. They're black and white- as real as Evan and his mother. Even though the letters aren't literally raining down on top of him, they're real and Evan can't escape them. The first time I listened to this song it reminded me of The Reynolds Pamphlet from Hamilton (thematically, not musically), and the whole thing with the letters raining down on top of him made me think of that even more because that's literally what's happening in that scene in Hamilton

"Tell me how can I change the story" Every time I listen to this, that part hits me, when I would sing this in the car shamelessly I always thought about how desperate Evan sounded during his solo. And when I would watch animatics a lot consisted of Evan being stress and scared sure, but I never saw anyone show just how desperate he was, and this one does, and quite frankly, it's why I always come back to watch this one. I had never thought of the concept of Evan grabbing the ghost of Connor (or, however, I prefer to think of it as Evan's conscience that he turns to - especially since Connor knows too much "did you fall or let go") asking him how to change their story. You seriously show how desperate he is at this point of the musical and it hits my heart every time x

When the tree came I knew what would happen but when he tripped and looked like he didn't want this to happen again, because for a while he thought he was in a good place, but then he hit the ground and the agony that he wasn't dead was in his face and I lost it. I also don't like how everyone is yelling at Evan. He saw something he thought he needed and he went for it, he's not innocent by any means because of how he got it, but no one should fault him for it.

oh the mother and alana definitely have reasons to be angry at him considering 1. with his mom he's essentially replacing her with another family entirely and before the song claims how she's not there when throughout the entire musical she was trying to get him to open up to her and talk to her. and 2. at this point he's essentially abandoned the connor project the very thing he wanted to start leaving alanna to do it herself and to apoint where she's starting to realize that some of the lies he's been telling doesn't make sense. jared on the other hand has no reason to be saying anything about being "used" considering he constantly goes on about how they are "family friends"and not "real friends" and constantly brings up this whole car insurance thing. hell he didn't even sign evan's cast at the beginning when evan asked him to....someone who evan has known for a long time.

Yeah, mostly because of their own issues. Alana was alone, didn't have friends, and felt like she would be forgotten and lost and not one thing she did would matter. Jared acted like a complete dick because he's insecure and scared of rejection. He can't handle being alone but he doesn't want people to know he depends on them. When he thought him and Evan were actually becoming close and Evan left him he lashed out. Evan is by no means a villain, but neither is anyone else. But Evan was the reason a lot of problems came about. Evan is the one who lied to begin with. Evan is the one who didn't tell the truth when he could've and he dragged Alana and Jared into it. They're all broken. They're all not the best. But it's because they all have issues. They're all paranoid and insecure.

I actually agree with all of them. Jared acted like he wasn't Evan'a friend but in reality he was just afraid of getting too close and kept walls up like humor and acting like he only interacted with Evan for his car insurance. And then Evan started to get popular off a lie Jared expresses his disapproval of several times over the course of the show. Not outright but it's definitely clear that Jared doesn't really like this lie and how out of hand it got. It was one thing when it was just to provide the Murphy's some comfort. He doesn't approve, after all he did berate Evan for lying and making shit up. It was another when Evan started getting popular and even landed Connor's sister as his girlfriend because of it. The final straw was Evan starting to ignore Jared With Alana it's got to do with the fact that Evan started this Project which he did ask for her help with. It was something that mattered to her and Evan started ignoring it when they were still short $17000 of their goal with only a week to raise it. To her it seemed like Evan started all this for himself, which is supported by the fact that she almost deduced that Evan was lying the whole time, and that he didn't really give a shit about Connor or the Connor Project. That it and she'd just been a tool for his own personal gain Ultimately Evan was a lousy friend and despite not meaning to abandoned the people around him in favor of his new popularity and his relationship with Zoe

Hands-down my favorite animatic of any song, period. It is so powerful when the tree shoots up and Connor is sitting on the branch with that dead, “you did this to yourself” look in his eyes... the end of this animatic has never failed to give me crazy chills

Jamie Hui yeah but in the play Jared and Alana tried to benefit from the situation to (Alana even presuming at the family how close she was to Connor when she barely knew him and Jared trying to put himself in the fake emails story when he saw how good it was turning out for Evan), but it didn't work out for them. I think they are more pissed at Evan cause he actually could make it and they couldn't

I agree, but I like how this musical shows that there's a second side to every story. Between parts of this song Alana talks to Evan and he says "You didn't even know him! Are you doing it just because you want one more thing for your curriculum?" and she yells back "Because I know what it's like to feel _INVISIBLE!_ Like Connor did! That nobody would even notice if you vanished into thin air!" She has partially used it for herself, but she also had a heartfelt motivation, unlike Jared who's been a cynical jerk for most of the time. Actually, all the time - but it still hurts to be cut off something. No-one likes to be considered only when they need your help, and that is awful even for people who kinda deserved it. Besides.. no one deserves to disappear. Even if you weren't your best self, even if you didn't do much good, like Connor, you still matter. We all grieve his death but Zoe's right, she only saw him as a monster, slamming on her door and shouting that he'd kill her for no reason (probably just because he was high all the time). He was angry all the time, a jerk to everybody - yet we forget that. We forget it because he took his life, and if he did it must mean he wasn't happy with his present self - we forget it because we understand he took the wrong path, but could have been nice otherwise. He chose drugs because, in the end, he was just a lost soul that didn't want to face the brokenness of reality. He.. could have been a good person, too. So no, I can't not feel bad if someone gets wronged, even when they _did_ do something just as bad. It's always bad to be hurt, no matter who you are.

Sweetypeace19 "like a mother should" I think people forget that mothers are human too. Heidi's been working her whole life to provide for Evan, as a single mother who isn't that well-off, and he just lets himself get whisked away by some rich family....it's like she says, she feels like she's not enough, like Evan never saw her as enough. That has to hurt. She's a human, she's allowed to be mad and frustrated and hurt (I think she was mostly hurt). Evan didn't take her feelings into account. I know he's a kid, but I'm about his age, and I'd never do that to my mom (who's a single mother too btw)

Honestly at the beginning I was just expecting one of those normal animatics that a ton of people do but when it really got into it, oh my god. Having them jump out of the phone and computer looked so smooth and then the ending with the tree- it was insane! I loved this so much, you did a great job!!
