It’s such a moving song anyway, but hearing the extra and very genuine emotion in his voice, being so overwhelmed to be back in front of a huge crowd again, just added to it and made the song even more moving! It’s happened to a couple people here. Carrie Fletcher was done dirty as well! Shes a great singer but the weather disrupted what she could here and she couldn’t here when to come in for her dances 😕 should really come up with a better way to do this event!!

@@luk3c1ary have you ever seen anyone on stage in a theatre wearing in ears? That’s not the issue here. The issue is the mic tracks have had no treatment in post so they just sound dry and dead. There’s 4 wedges on stage so unless they had poor monitor levels on stage then everything should have been fine

We were there and the sound quality was fine. Sam sounded brilliant - a real stand out of the day. The sound quality of a lot of these videos doesn’t do the performers justice. Don’t judge him based on this video.

Sam has struggled with this performance BUT the sound engineers are at fault to be honest. Everyone is having to push much harder because the sound is dry and distorted! We all know that they are capable of better though 🥰

Not sure what went wrong here but it deffo isn’t Sam at fault. I was there and he was brilliant today, a real stand out of the whole event for me. I audio recorded waving through a window and videoed you will be found and listened to them both back and he sounds great on there too, so really something has gone wrong somewhere with their sound / recording systems. I’m disappointed and shocked to see there’s any issue as it truly was a stunning performance live :-(

they most likely recorded the live sound directly from the system, and from experience, a live sound mix does not translate into a good mix for video. most other concert producers would do additional mixing for the video but it seems that WEL wanted to upload the videos as quickly as possible (like an hour after they perform??) so the sound is very much compromised..

What is up with the tech crew? I remember when I first went to watch west end life years ago, the lion king cast couldn’t perform their section because their mics just didn’t work at all. I know the event is huge and lots of pressure on the tech crew to pull it off. This isn’t the first time I’ve seen tech problems here and way before COVID 19 disrupted everyone around the theatre industry. But this cast did an amazing job even so 😊

I think there were issues across a lot of the performances with the actors hearing the music. Lots of pitch and timing issues that seem to be derived from them not being able to hear the backing.

You try live mixing for shows you don’t work on 🙄 yes there are big issues but you clearly don’t know how it works 🤣 the live sound will have been on point, just a shame this seems to have fallen through a gap. @@kerrynlogan894 it has nothing to do with the break for covid. There have always been audio issues at WEL. The video of David Hunter and Lucie Jones when David's mic just stopped working was from 2019 (from memory). I went in 2018 and I remember there being issues with mics not being on when the person was on stage. But 2021's videos have been full of issues, many of which would have been obvious even in person - they turned off Elphaba's mic when Glinda left the stage. Someone had to walk on stage and give Valjean a handheld mic when his stopped working after having issues for his entire song. During Phantom, Killean Donnelly's mic was on while he was backstage and he said "f**k" which is clearly heard around 7 mins 24 seconds into the Phantom video. Carrie couldn't hear her backing track and missed the first word of her number and posted on Instagram that she hated the performance because she was in the wrong key and struggled a lot as the backing track was affected by the wind/her moving on the stage. If the sound crew for WEL are struggling I am sure there are plenty of others who would have been happy to do it instead. For many people watching videos like this is their only insight into musical theatre and with audio this poor it gives them a terrible impression and won't encourage them to actually go and see the shows in person. Only I've seen loads of videos before and been in person I know that the audio issues are not directly related to each show performing, so it doesn't put me off going to see the shows.

I didn’t once say it was because of covid… but you’ve still got to give people a chance after so long! I am a techie, I know what some of the issues are such as wind blowing the sound away so they cannot hear etc. You never know the situation. The person operating sound might have been chucked in last minute because of a positive case etc but we will never know. But those mic issues are common when the mics are changing hands so often, again I come to the op might not have worked on those shows so aren’t familiar with characters. It’s a lot to blame someone when you don’t know the circumstances. After the past year and a bit I’ll stand up for anyone in my trade because it’s not an easy job and being slagged behind your back isn’t nice!
