Heat Check

Жыл бұрын

Watch the clock as this shot goes in at 9:06 remaining, and notice how Ja Morant literally stole 16 seconds from Minnesota's time for a comeback by acting like a guy who’s never played sports before in his life.
Thing is, he did it throughout the entire 4th quarter and when you add up all of these sequences, it’s almost an entire minute that he shaved off without having to defend the lead.
And this is not even his worst offense. In a wild display of this technique, after this shot by Kyrie Irving, Morant stole an entire shot clock, a whole possession away from the Nets. He is the absolute god at this and it’s not even close.
I mean Just look at him slowly walking in a squat position and staring at Ben Simmons as he milks every possible second that he could at the end of this game.
Actually a lot of players are doing this. Let me show you. What up everybody, my name is stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it.
Dennis Schroeder is just as sneaky, and against Washington in a very close game, he also wasted almost an entire 24 seconds before the Wizards realized that the clock is their enemy and they can’t afford this to happen. Finally Porzingis put an end to this circus, otherwise Schroeder was ready to finish the game off like this.
And after this bucket by Detroit, the Celtics shamelessly stood in the backcourt for like 10 seconds, waiting for their opponents. And it turned out to be a genius decision, as they got an advantage, and a wide open Tatum in the corner splashing the three.
And before you ask, this is not an 8 second violation because that’s being counted off of the shot clock and not the game clock.
As you watch Nikola Jokic also exploiting this loophole throughout the entire 4th quarter let me quickly explain that for the first 3 quarters the game clock doesn’t stop after a made basket until the last minute. And for the 4th quarter it’s the last 2 minutes of the period.
And of course the shot clock will not start until a player touches it and establishes possession, so that’s how you get an opportunity for situations like this.
This is nothing new, and it has been happening in the NBA in the past, and this moment of Ty Lawson milking the clock is one of the most famous examples of it.
And even tho it’s technically pretty smart for the offense to do it, and it’s the other team’s fault for not pressing and allowing the clock to run, I don’t really like to see it in NBA games.
In a weird way it reminds me of football players just laying on the pitch faking an injury so that the time would pass. And to me this is against the spirit of the sport.
But I don’t really see a way to change this unless the NBA decides to stop the clock after a made basket from the beginning of the 4th quarter.
That way players would just be focused on playing basketball instead of running down the time.
Is this smart, or a bit unprofessional? Let me know in the comments. If you liked this video, support the grind and subscribe. Talk to you in the next one. Peace out.

You showed two very different examples. Wasting time before inbounding should be addressed, its an exploit. There is nothing the defense can do to counter that. Wasting time after the inbound is a legit basketball play since the opposing team can defend and make them pick up the ball

you are missing one point. It's a logical error that a team inbounds (so they are in possession of the ball and they start the play) but their 24 second count doesnt start. that makes no sense at all. that logical error gets even worse because while the team clock doesnt start, the game clock does.

It seems like this could be easily defended by just having 1 player defend the inbound. It takes 2 players to inbound the ball and only 1 person to prevent them from doing a lame ass roll inbounds. You don't have to go all out full court press, just have a guard stay to defend the inbound. The defense still has 4vs3 on the other end of the court. 100% in favor of the rolling inbound. As the defending team, just pressure the inbounds pass, forcing a real pass and not a roll up. You're about to lose anyway so in theory you should be desperate. It's a very simple solution, force a regular inbound pass and get the shot clock started by forcing a touch. I like the rule because that possession that resulted in a made basket was really cool, it was hectic and generated a distinct advantage off of a gamble from both teams. If the rule also forces more pressure and a hectic style full court, that also makes for better end-game basketball IMO. The team that's down should be desperate to force more mistakes full court anyway. Flopping is a pretty terrible comparison. Flopping is trying to deceive refs. This inbounds loophole is just gamesmanship from the team that's up. They're challenging the other team. "Play me or your desperate little comeback is done."

If it’s apart of the rules then it’s intelligent to take advantage of it in a competitive league where winning directly contributes to success and money. I really loved the new take foul rules and seeing more uneven fast breaks. A way to deter this move would be to have an 8 second count like they do normally but also add in a 10-12 second call that goes with the game clock and not the shot clock. Meaning you can still do that delay of the clock but only 10 seconds at a time max. Or just make it 10 seconds like it used to be and start that counter as soon as the ball comes inbounds whether a player touches it or not. Or start the timer as soon as the ball touches the floor inbounds.

Sadly, they (the refs) can't do that, because the rule book is very specific. There is already a 5-second limit on in-bounding, when the player has full possession of the ball. There is no delay of game rule related to this. Per the NBA rulebook "A delay-of-game shall be called for: Preventing the ball from being promptly put into play. Interfering with the ball after a successful field goal or free throw. Failing to immediately pass the ball to the nearest official when a personal foul or violation is assessed." The ball can be defended, the problem being, they are exploiting the very reason for the shot clock. As for diving for the ball, per NBA rules "Players cannot 'dive on' or 'jump on' their opponents in an attempt to control a loose ball, or to cause a jump ball.”" In other words, since the players are shielding the ball it could be a violation of the rule.

@@tupacalypse88 The argument you will most commonly see, is that a strong slugger on a team thinks that they can do better than a single. A bunt, if successful, is almost always just a single. If it was just that, then it would be a stupid argument, because even the best hitters average less than a single per at bat. Even Barry Bonds only averaged like 0.6 bases per at bat, and he is one of the all-time leaders. The real reason you don't see it that much, is pride. Bunting is a skill that needs to be learned, a failed bunt is kinda embarrassing, and if you bunt into the shift, you are doing exactly what the defense wants you to do, so you feel like you shouldn't do it, even though it is probably the most efficient play.

Rule #1 - If a player does not make a concerted attempt to inbound the ball in a reasonable time, the referee can issue a warning, followed by a technical. Rule #2 - If a team inbounding does not touch the ball within 5 seconds of it touching the floor, a violation is called awarding 1 free throw (but still remaining possession). His analogy has nothing to do with countering the tactic, it was comparing it to the spirit of the game. Soccer rules did not intend for players to fake injuries just like NBA rules did not intend for players to camp and roast marshmallows with the ball on the ground. Two different things can be similar depending on what you're comparing. If I say "apples are like oranges because they are both fruits," you can't counter with "you're wrong because one is red and the other is orange."

If defenses don't like what it's doing to the spirit of the game they can simply adjust their defensive strategy. Apples to oranges is the phrase used when comparing two things that really shouldn't be compared because they're not similar enough. These two situations are similar in the same way that apples and oranges are fruit, but different in that the defensive ability to respond doesn't exist in one sport and does in the other.

The original rule back in the 90s wouldn't allow this. This was avoided by initiating the 5-second out of bounds count until it was inbound into a players hand. I thought about it and it's kinda hard to fix. The first thing I considered is starting the shot clock (and game clock after 2:00 mark) as soon as the ball leaves the inbounder's hands. The problem is that it takes away the Hail-Mary play when a team is down less than a bucket with 1s or so to go and makes the game less exciting. Then I thought just stop the clock after each bucket in the 4th quarter like side-out plays. But that would mean an increase in game duration and that's also problematic for the league as they're trying to stick to a schedule of 2h30m per game. So I thought maybe give the refs the ability to call delay-of-game warning, then technical free throws (a la def-3secs) after the first time. But without a clear criteria for the call to be made, as it is really hard to narrow that down, it would have to be at the referee's discretion. And man, nobody, I mean not a single soul wants the refs to have any more power to influence a game than they already do.

If I was a coach, to combat this, I would tell the player guarding the person walking the ball on the court to go in front of him and do the take charge pose. This would have to force the player to have to pick up the ball, or run into the defensive player. Once the offensive player notices he picks up the ball, hurry back on defense. And one thing the nba could introduce is, if you do this method, if you inbound the ball past half court, the shotclock changes to 14 seconds like after an offensive rebound.

So you can combat the two problems in a different way: 1. After inbounding the bal can only bounce one before it touches a player. 2. The offence has 5 seconds after te score to inbound the bal. 2 A. Rolling the ball is seen as bouncing the ball more then once. 2.B. If the ball bounces away to far the ref stops the time 2 C. If an offensieve player touches the ball after the score in a unnecessary continuation of motion or intention it is a technical foul. The offence must have the option to inbound fast. With 2B you also get the delay game tactics to prevent fast breaks after a score as well. Also no in the spirit of the game.

If there’s a rule that states you can’t do this to waste time does it then apply to a team trying to save time towards the end of the game using the same tactic? The delay in inbounding the ball should be a delay of game penalty. But, the rolling the ball trick, the defense can easily stop that by defending the inbound pass instead of running down to the other end of the court. That's a coaching problem. You can pressure the inbound pass and as soon as you see the inbounder passing the ball just run back on defense. It takes extra effort, which I'm sure is not easy when it's the 4th Q of a game and you're expending a lot of energy trying to make a comeback, but it's not something that can't be defended. It's when it comes to guys like Ja and Lebron, defenders are so worried that they'll blow right by them.
