I’m new to Death and have been devouring their discography. I’m really surprised by how consistent the songwriting and vision of the band is throughout their catalog. I prefer the Human and later albums personally but the first three have some savage tracks. One of the few bands where you can make a solid argument for almost any album to be the best.

Death albums are like my children. I can’t rank them haha. Except Human, that’s my favorite. Also agree that Chuck’s voice on The Sound Of Perseverance is really good. Sure his voice changed over time, but that’s doesn’t mean for the worse.

Purchased my first Death album in 2003 (Leprosy) just from the publicity in magazines after his passing, plus how highly many extreme metal fans ranked Death I was curious and this was before KZbin was big. I couldn't believe how awesome they were, it came out of nowhere for me honestly. Me and many of my close friends all got into Death at the same time, influencing a few of them to start death metal bands which played locally. Within a year or two I had purchased every studio album including Control Denied. A major tragedy losing Chuck and future music we missed out on, including When Man And Machine Collide, even though judging from the '96 demo I wish he had done vocals himself in that band. I would tend to agree on Symbolic being my favorite as well. Out of their entire discography, it strikes the perfect balance of their classic death metal sound and the more prog metal song structure. And Perennial Quest's outro was just legendary.

I guess it’s because Chuck got rid of the line-up he had on Spiritual Healing. Bill Andrews, Terry Butler and James Murphy all left the band. Then the line up on Human was Chuck with Steve DiGiorgio, Paul Masvidal and Sean Reinert. So 3/4 of the band changed in between those albums.

You cannot decide a top 10 or top 7 as there are 3 stages of Death: first death metal: Scream Bloody Gore and Leprosy. Then Spiritual Healing headed to technical death metal second: technical death metal: Human and Individual (my favourite albums) Symbolic was on the verge and then progressive death metal

Keep in mind these are almost entirely different death metal genres and for the most part they all have that old school sound unlike any other death metal bands I've heard, they keep that slayer/Metallica vibes with the instruments and the awesome one of a kind vocals that are completely different if you listen closely. Also his genius mind was able to pull off thrash/death metal to heavy death metal to progressive death metal to technical death metal. In my opinion there is no rank there is only a masterpiece created by a true artist. Remember where the word "Death" came from in the sun genre "Death Metal" yes it may have been around a little earlier than chuck's uprising but it wasn't called death metal until chuck came along. Just my understanding correct me if I'm wrong.
